I think it's more that Bards seem to lose the ability to use Conjurer skills, and instead can use Lancer and Pugilist skills. The conclusion from that is that Bards will need at least one of Lancer or Pugilist to 15, possibly both. I guess the logic makes sense from that standpoint, but I wonder why Bards don't get to use Conjurer skills anymore. It would seem to make sense for a support class to get access to Conjurer stuff.
It's weird. Everything I had read was that Bards lose the ability to use Pugilist skills, but still had Conjurer and Lancer abilities. If they lost Conjurer abilities, it wouldn't really disappoint me that much... not being able to use Cure with the shit MND stat I had is certainly not a huge loss, Protect is always better from a CNJ, and Raise I'd get over.
It's kinda annoying having all these questions and not having the right information. I mean is this normal? Are the players supposed to figure it out themselves or will they tell us all the information eventually?
I'm mostly concerned about the Free Company Housing and player housing details. Like I want to know exactly what you can get/how much/etc.
Well that stuff hadn't been finalized so.... yea it's pretty normal for them not give out details they don't have.
For what it is worth, I do not mind not having all of the information handed to me. I kind of enjoy discovering things in the game as opposed to finding everything I need on allakhazam et al, and then playing Scavenger Hunt Barbie to fill in all the little boxes I need.
I don't even like player housing to be honest. what kind of sever community is it when all everyone does is hang out in their guild houses
Considering not much happens 'server community'-wise in games that don't have it... I would say it's much better as there's some sense of community rather than none!
I remember in vanilla wow pretty much everyone on the server knew each other and you had all kinds of rivalries and such going on
There was also rampant elitism and black listing for not boot licking. I'll take a lack of that "community" any day.

Considering they're still working on it and its not implemented fully into the game yet. Note that the housing they had up for phase 4 was just to test the zone itself. They are likely looking into ways to make it work and be fun at the same time. So we're just basing what we know off the small amount of information provided.
I am ok with the whole 'figure it out yourself' in terms how the job system is going to work. It makes it more interesting. I like the idea of having to work it out myself rather then going somewhere and someone give me a step by step on how to get whatever.
A lot of the questions being asked and this is not to knock anyone, I mean that is what the forum is for after all we're here to help each other. Can be answered with a simple Google search. Heck a lot of the answers are listed in the OP of this thread. Delph did a good job of breaking down the information.
Hiding information from the players so they have to figure it out, is the only way gave devs can actually create any type of 'mystery' into the game. Players are hand feed all this information from Database sites like wowhead and such. For me it spoils it a bit.
Not to say my opinion is the right one. I enjoy it being a mystery. I have done my best to avoid all spoilers, leveling guides etc, I want to experience it for myself and figure it out. There is nothing wrong with getting hand fed the information. I just don't enjoy it as much.
I remember WoW. Nothing was given to the players. All raid tanking mechanics were player discovered. Lots of observation and lots and lots and lots of math on the tanking communities.
So I preordered this today for ps3 from amazon. Its likely I will get an early access code (its my wifes prime account, so I have to have her check her email). Will I be able to download a new client, or use the p4 client for early access? Or will I need my physical copy (which probably wont arrive until tuesday)?
I suppose if its the latter, I will have a spare early access key for someone, but hopefully theres a downloadable client.
I think it's awesome that the early guildhests teach players, one hest at a time, how to do the more involved coordinated actions that will be necessary for dungeons and high level content. Starting at level 10! A guild representative stands nearby and literally talks you through it. "Okay, go over here. Don't hit the switch yet! Focus on the small enemies first, then the big enemy. Okay, now use the switch!"

Having a bit of mystery around quests is one thing, core class mechanics is a little different.
I'm not going to go read up on a dungeon before I go into it, but I do want to know how to access it. It's not about knowing all the secrets, I just want to make sure I'm not missing something or taking the wrong path toward something to want to achieve. So I'll do a little research to find out which crafting class I want to start first, but I don't think I'll do a lot of research past that unless I get stuck.
I agree, mystery is a big part of what makes a game fun. I love discovering new places, seeing new gear and enemies. But my gaming time is limited, so I like to feel like I accomplished something if I sit down for a few hours.

What class has mechanics shrouded in mystery? They all seem well fleshed out to me.
Let that be a lesson to the rest of you: you never know when you might be watched, so always try to look competent. 8-)
Heh ya, but I wouldn't worry about looking competent to a guy who has the terrible UI arrangement in that screenshot.
I did notice that monstrosity he's got going on and wondering how he could possibly play with all that clutter.
Even the default UI placement gets in the way for me, especially when fighting big-sized enemies.
I really can't wait to find that sweet spot with the UI placement and scaling. I want to try and go as minimal as possible with those settings.
For instance, I would like a way to disable the text that tells you how much exp you earn per battle. Based on the Phase 4 options, there's no way to disable that specific message without disabling the notifications I would want to keep (like items acquired, achievements earned, etc).
I have mine pretty minimalized so far. Still need to tweak it a bit. I do wish I could get the minimap squared and have a less long target HP bar.
That screenshot though... ugh. I'm guessing the guy is just a major hotkey clicker and doesn't have proper hotkeys setup. Because those bars are all kinda centered so he doesn't have to move his mouse as far to click stuff. I've seen it before, especially with people who have never PVP'ed much since you can kinda get by with such a terrible setup if all you do is PVE.
They aren't shrouded in Mystery, we just don't have access to the game at the moment. Once we do all that will become clear. The problem is that they have changed things recently so it's just a matter of updating with the new info.
I promise you Day 1 of Early Access all those questions will be answered.

Well I've gone and made the plunge and signed up for early access (silly beta 4 giving me a taste for the game!).
Turns out I'm not quite as tired of fantasy MMOs as I previously thought. Hoping to get in on Sargatanas as well, even as a dirty EU player - hopefully there will be folks online so any timezone differences won't be too glaring...
It's all saltwater these days:
Ocean, tears and heartbreak soup
Half alive in a whitecap foam
Half in love with a white half moon

Yeah, seems that way. I just wanted to see if someone had that info somewhere, but this is fine too. I'm only 17 on Archer, so it's not like I'm in a rush.

As horrible as that UI is, it doesn't even compare ones I've seen in WoW. People with, not even exaggerating, 90% of their screen covered with grids and hotkeys and such. They're not even playing the game presented at that point, and they're more like playing Microsoft Excel. I don't get it. I've never understood why you'd want to mangle a UI so much that you're not even seeing the game you're playing anymore.
If the game becomes the UI then the ways in which you're presenting necessary information to the player via gameplay is either bad or painfully inadequate. You should be able to play with most relevant information being presented to you visually with the UI being a support; not vice versa. XIV does a pretty good job of this generally with things like radius of attacks etc, and being able to display health bars over players.

Oh I know, this whole conversation started up because of them. And some were advocating mystery in mmo's in response to that, I was just disagreeing that mystery was great especially with core class mechanics.
Kinda why I kept the quote tree.

Some PVP's put all their bars near the middle of the screen because it's easier to keep track of cool downs. I did that early in WoW for PVP, before we had fancy things like ability trackers. Though later in WoW's life, my screen set up was stupidly minimalist. The only bars on screen were my health bar, the target's health bar, my debuffs and buffs, and like a row of 5 buttons with potions.
Let that be a lesson to the rest of you: you never know when you might be watched, so always try to look competent. 8-)

I've seen those too, its all a bunch of useless crap. Just people with bad motor skills and bad organization I guess. Or maybe its like the hoarders show, but with WoW add-ons.

Eh your response implied that the specializations and cross class stuff was shrouded in mystery, especially when you responded to DaemonSadi who specifically asked you what was shrouded in mystery since it all seemed fleshed out to him.
I see what you are saying now, but the way you responded gave a different impression.

Someone linked http://www.ffxivinfo.com/job/white-mage.php earlier seems like as good a source as any, certainly makes more sense then some sites listing gladiator as one of the req for white mage.

Eh with the way WoW presented health, if you were a healer in a 25 (or 40, ugh) man raid the required healthbars took a substantial amount of real estate, no matter how minimalist they were. I suppose it would be slightly improved if you had a decently large monitor, but I only have a 17" screen to work with at the moment.

@Disrupter You will be able to continue using the same client.
When you receive your ps3 preorder key you'll have to go through the preorder registration
enter the new key they give you on your ps3
download the client there if you haven't already from beta phase 4
follow the steps to link your PSN and square enix accounts (again, if you haven't already)
then you get the option to apply the code to your existing service account or a new account
Nice! Now I just need to determine if I will actually participate in the early access or not. My planned FFXIV buddy is going camping this weekend and we would be getting off on the wrong foot if I were to spend a weekend leveling up and putting a level gap between us (i know, with class switching i could always just get a second class going with him to catch up).
Question about how the the jobs work. Is it feesible to spend the weekend leveling up fishing or gathering or mining or one of the craftings and not touch any combat exp? Or will I need to reach a certain point in the story/level to really access those things?

You'd have to hit level 10 and to the quests there to be able to change jobs at all.
It still isn't really a big deal though, in my opinion.
Oh, are raids in this not glorious 40 man zerg runs?
Man I loved me some 40 mans back in the day.
I was young and didn't know any better, but those days of infighting and broken marriages truly entertained me for years.
Probably for the best if they're not a thing here. Ten mans, maybe? Eight? I vaguely recall eight being a party number in this? As long as the instances aren't literally GW2 style jumping puzzles I'll be happy to run them any which way.
Let that be a lesson to the rest of you: you never know when you might be watched, so always try to look competent. 8-)

I really really really hope they allow LUA UI mods, so I can run with a pure minimalist UI I used in WoW later on for Raid Tanking/DPSing. All I need is a HuD, simple but informative translucent raid/party frames, my cooldowns clearly displayed (but the hotbars themselves all completely hidden and keybound), and threat/damage/healing/etc. meters.
It really makes it 100x easier when you can actually see clearly everything that's going on in a huge raid fight.

Yeah, you can get to 10 in a few hours pretty handily; then just switch to whatever crafting/gathering class you want and focus on it. You just can't choose (afaik anyway) a Disciple of the Land starting class.
EDIT: though, so many things are locked behind story quests that you can't really do as a DoL class, that in all that time you won't be getting your airship pass, retainers, dying, chocobos etc. I'd say at least get that stuff first to make your gathering/crafting more accessable. It's a heftier time investment, but it's worth it.

I have no idea what you are talking about
Lucky you
Eh I know exactly what he is talking about. I played Vanilla WoW on Medivh where Ascent first made their home. (World first Rag kill) There was A LOT of ass kissing and elitism on that server. Luckily i was one of those getting my ass kissed. It was still pretty bad.
As long as there are questions to be asked, as long as the majority of the player base are fresh players with very little experience, I think the /shout channel will remain a positive place for info and helping people.
However, once people learn the ropes and have an understanding of game mechanics, /shout will very likely become an abominable cesspit of filth and immaturity.

Still, strange...
Well that stuff hadn't been finalized so.... yea it's pretty normal for them not give out details they don't have.

I was in a big guild in EQ2, and one of the most awesome things I remember was our huge guild hall. EQ2 had a really nice guild hall system.

I suppose if its the latter, I will have a spare early access key for someone, but hopefully theres a downloadable client.
It's so, so great.
Having a bit of mystery around quests is one thing, core class mechanics is a little different.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
They aren't shrouded in Mystery, we just don't have access to the game at the moment. Once we do all that will become clear. The problem is that they have changed things recently so it's just a matter of updating with the new info.
I promise you Day 1 of Early Access all those questions will be answered.

Turns out I'm not quite as tired of fantasy MMOs as I previously thought. Hoping to get in on Sargatanas as well, even as a dirty EU player - hopefully there will be folks online so any timezone differences won't be too glaring...

Yeah, seems that way. I just wanted to see if someone had that info somewhere, but this is fine too. I'm only 17 on Archer, so it's not like I'm in a rush.
All skills have the classes that can used them listed right on there. Specializations aren't locked down yet.

I've seen those too, its all a bunch of useless crap. Just people with bad motor skills and bad organization I guess. Or maybe its like the hoarders show, but with WoW add-ons.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Eh your response implied that the specializations and cross class stuff was shrouded in mystery, especially when you responded to DaemonSadi who specifically asked you what was shrouded in mystery since it all seemed fleshed out to him.
I see what you are saying now, but the way you responded gave a different impression.

I have no idea what you are talking about
Lucky you
@Disrupter You will be able to continue using the same client.
When you receive your ps3 preorder key you'll have to go through the preorder registration
enter the new key they give you on your ps3
download the client there if you haven't already from beta phase 4
follow the steps to link your PSN and square enix accounts (again, if you haven't already)
then you get the option to apply the code to your existing service account or a new account
then it will patch, etc
Question about how the the jobs work. Is it feesible to spend the weekend leveling up fishing or gathering or mining or one of the craftings and not touch any combat exp? Or will I need to reach a certain point in the story/level to really access those things?
You'd have to hit level 10 and to the quests there to be able to change jobs at all.
It still isn't really a big deal though, in my opinion.

It won't at launch, but they've said they intend on making the UI moddable in the future.

Awesome guide covering all aspects of FFXIV.
