Trying to make a board game but need help figuring out hexagonal LOS and FOV

Hi, I've been a long time lurker on PA and felt compelled to finally speak up and ask a question. I'm working tactical fantasy game where type of archery shot will play a role. I will need to figure out how a straight shot line drive shot will work for that purpose. With Hexes what are the possible ways, or best ways to calculate line of site and field of view?

Thanks,
Starsuit

My instinct for the easiest way is to take a piece of string and stretch it from any corner of the hex the archer is in, to any corner of the hex the target is in. if you can do that without passing through solid objects, you have LOS. If you want to deal with partial cover, any hex it passes through that would obstruct but not block LOS (i.e. another creature, ubiquitous waist-high walls, etc) could give some penalty to hit.

I've been playing Heroscape for a while. Here's a link, in this thread is a large amount of images of cards used for units.

On the right hand side of the card, there's a small image of the unit. The small green dot in the image is where the unit sees from. The red parts are areas than can be targeted by a ranged attack. The greyed out areas can not be targeted.

If a unit can see, from the green dot, and part of the red area on its target, then you have LOS.

Depending on how realistic you want to go then one approach I've seen taken is to trace the shortest possible route between the target and the shooter. If there is a Line-Of-Sight blocking obstruction on that route then LOS is blocked, otherwise you are fine. If there are multiple shortest routes then if any of them are open the shot can be taken.

I have a thoughtful and infrequently updated blog about games http://whatithinkaboutwhenithinkaboutgames.wordpress.com/

I made a game, it has penguins in it. It's pay what you like on Gumroad.
