Phew, finally beat it. Took longer than I'd have liked and I lost way too many Pikmin but that son of a bitch is dead.
Did you use bombs? They were handy when the sarlac pits formed, but if a bomb carrier got hit by a sand ball it seemed to cause the bomb to go off.
I mostly got through by getting all my guys to 'Charge!' up the hill and hope I could force it out of the ground.
O_o
Are you kidding me??? That would've totally come in handy and saved me at least one or two days.
My technique was not ideal either. Sometimes they would struggle to get up the hill. Plus locking on takes practice. I'm better at it now than I was for that fight.
Edit: I just noticed the bombs emphasis. Feel free to try it on boss mode... Wayward bombs killed a lot of my guys.
Put the cursor exactly on the enemy (this can be challenging) and press ZL.
There might actually be some complexity to this. It sometimes feels like the first press moves the cursor to the object, if you aren't already on it. And just tapping it centers the camera.
Anyway, you know you have lock on when the objects name appears and there is a HUD kind of effect.
Pressing B while locked on initiates Charge!

So I just finished day three, and I did not realize how much I missed Pikmin. God this game is beautiful and so much fun so far. I seemed to have been able to slip right back into multi-tasking just like I learned in Pikmin 2. I only have Alph and Brittney so far.
Rock Pikmin are pretty awesome, and really fun to chuck at things, although I hate that it seems to have been to the exclusion of the purple Pikmin. I miss them already and their oversized bellies.
Now to go and slaughter what looks to be a giant earwig with an ice back. Earwigs are gross, so I'm going to enjoy killing it.

The stupid gross earwig murdered 12 of my Pikmin.
Not bad for the first boss, but they will be avenged, oh yes, they will be.
The surviving Pikmin keep looking at me with judging eyes.
Edit: Oh, and I'm doing a no retry game. If I lose Pikmin, they stay gone. I won't be redoing days to do better. I'd like to see how I do my first time through.
Fuuuuck this fourth boss. It is a huge fucking monster, puts Bulblax to shame!
I'm terrified to go near its "weak point"
because it mouth is directly below the weak point!!
and it just seems like I'm not doing any damage.
The first three bosses had certain weaknesses, but I'm not quite seeing it here. This is gonna be a disaster
I think you mean the fifth boss..
1. The one with the shell
2. The one in the dark
3. The one in the sand
4. The one with all the friends
5. The one in the mud
I beat it by using 4 vials of spicy berry juice. I also sent Charlie back to the ship for reserves while Alph kept sending Pikmin to their death.
Most colours work for that fight, but going blue has advantages.
huh, yeah I forgot all about 4. It was easier than the others.
The only advantage Blue has is with the terrain and that isn't nearly as deadly as the monster itself. I seemed like maybe Rock Pikmin were dealing good damage when I hit it directly but then that's what Rock Pikmin do usually. I'm not sure about bringing a swarm of Rocks but hell if it fails I'll reset the day (again). I fucked up bigtime and let it stomp 70 Pikmin all at once. Also one time it gobbled up at least 20. I don't like this thing!
I headed in first thing in the morning and took in 25 of each, excluding Pink. Tripped it up ok and shattered the crystal ok. So far so good
But yeah the next phase, I lost a whole bunch straight away to the:
Giant disgusting 360 degree tongue!
After a while I was able to get a good pattern. Have enough on the weak point to do damage, then back out safely and collect any that got knocked off.
At 50% health I think it starts stampeding around the zone, making holes etc. And I think I lost a bunch more in the holes. Buy the time Charlie got back to the Onion he pulled out 89 more reserves, all blue. They were enough to finish it off; maybe 20 or so getting stomped.
Using spicy berry juice to make Pikmin go crazy helped make those windows of opportunity really count.
Went to work today after having yesterday off to find that we are completely sold out of Pikmin 3 (and Animal Crossing). Of course, we only had 6 copies of the game but apparently people were asking for it a lot.

Wow, I REALLY hate this new control scheme. Give me my swarm control; this throwing/targetting system is shit.
Charge + Dodge makes it much easier. If you hold R you can aim without moving (which seems to help with flying guys). But yeah I miss swarming... Wonder why they got rid of it? I do like being able to control the camera though.
In the snow area (where the captain landed) there's an item you can pick up that you press the left or right on the dpad to make you and your pikmin roll in that direction. If I had it for the boss it would have been 100 times easier.
It's near the landing zone. There are some fire slugs and stuff in the area... You use the water stream to jump up to the next level, cross the bridge, and then you toss some pikmin across the red mushroom and they grab it and run back.

I wonder if anyone's run the mathematics to get a solid size of the bosses. Even with my size advantage I would want to get nowhere near the third boss.
Just wanted to say, I haven't actually played it myself yet but I did watch my wife play the beginning and holy hell the game is more beautiful than any screenshot or video.
Seriously, is this going to be like a theme or something? This is twice now she gets stranded in the middle of nowhere and I'm on like day 5.
(also I hate her fake voice... it sounds like a child or something)
Awww... I like Brittany. I send her out exploring with a 100 pink death fairies; ready to make mincemeat of any arial threats; and maybe come home with some fruit!
Speaking of pink death fairies, here's a trick I found! If you throw a red/blue/yellow bomb pikmin up a step, they usually drop the bomb, exploding it. However with a Pink Bomb Pikmin you can dismiss it, throw a captain up the step, then whistle the Pink Bomb Pikmin to you. Good for getting bombs to hard to reach places!
Are there Blue Pikmin in this game? I hadn't really spoiled much prior to the game release and didn't even expect the Pink Pikmin. I was assuming they take the place of blue but am running into things that seem suitable only for a water pikmin to get.

It's ok, I think I've had like half the game spoiled for me already in random reviews and stuff.
I hear it's decently short (like, typical Pikmin game length) so maybe I can beat it quickly :P
Edit:
One of these days I really should for-reals beat Pikmin 2 tho. Like, I beat it the first time but then it opens up like a fucking second game after you beat it, it's crazy.
The 4th boss is a giant asshole. It's Pikmin apocalypse. And the 3rd boss wasn't much better. Maybe i'm just really bad at the game. Or need to use the wiimote controls
It's probably the controls. I've been using the wiimote the entire time and I haven't had any issues with bosses. I think I only lost 7 to the 3rd boss and 2 to the 4th.
5th boss was an asshole though. Once I figured out everything he does it wasn't so bad. But oh so many dead pikmin figuring that out.

God I watched that Giantbomb quick look last night. So much misinformation :P They are at least always entertaining though.
But yeah, not only can you still use the gamepad with the wiimote setup, but the wiimote setup is like a million times better.
Also they weren't kidding about that Jungle area being confusing. They really shouldn't have gone there that early though - I'm not even sure they could have solved anything without the three characters.

I have no idea why I bought it, Pikmin 1 was one of the few games that I've ever ended up trading in.

If I had had that against the first boss...!
