Also, what are the rules for bushes near houses, I planted one at a distance that would have been fine for a tree and it withered. Is planting near sidewalks a no no? Looked it up online and just got conflicting gobbledygook.

There are a few dead spots on each map, where nothing grows successfully. The only particularly special thing about bushes is that you can grow them right beside each other without one or the other withering.
Follow up question. Can I set my system clock back to Joan Time when I get home from work, buy turnips, and then set it back to real time without ruining my turnips or irrevocably damaging the time space continuum or possibly becoming my own grandfather?
I have done this numerous times. If you wake up at 2 p.m. on Sunday, you can set the 3DS clock to 9 a.m., buy your turnips, save, change the 3DS clock to 2 p.m., and re-enter the game without causing problems.
So far as the game "knows", you woke up at 9 a.m., bought turnips, and then stopped playing till 2 p.m.
All the game does (if your WiFi is off) is check the timestamp on the last save. So if you logged in at 2 p.m., saved, logged out, changed to 9 a.m., and went back the game would "know" you fucked with the settings. But if your last save is on saturday? No problems.

I planted two bushes right next to my home, and they both withered.
Not sure what the rules are, but I know what is too close.
Edit:
1) Shrubs will not grow immediately next to water, cliffs, rocks, buildings,
signs, plazas, and bridges.
2) Within a 7x7 square plot of land that already has 15 trees and/or shrubs, a
shrub will not grow. Source
Does this mean you can officially give you flowers a golden shower?
In better news, @Conn, I have a stego skull for you in my inventory in Omnar2. Feel free to come by whenever today, and I'll probably peek over and see it's you, and give you the fossil.
Might also have the tail, but don't quote me on that. >_>
Changes to Omnar2 for the upcoming inventory shift is underway, and measurements are being made twice, nay, THRICE, to make sure that everything has a place. If only I could spend some bells to get rid of the fucking pond up top...that shit is just in the way, and I need a more accurate counting system than having to subtract the pond space. >_<
Notice: From this point onward, only one of anything will be kept. All duplicates of fossils, Nintendo items, rares, and (especially) common items will be considered a generous donation to the selling point of either being marketed in ReTail so I can force a 3x price buy from townies, or simply sold for an immediate sum.
The warning has been issued, and I will refuse to have pity on any soul caught off-guard when this change occurs throughout the day. Duplicates still out, however, will be left alone until such time as they are taken by others, and will be accomodatingly sorted directly in front of its duplicate.
If my information is wrong, please feel free to correct me so I may better provide adequate spacing restrictions for items.
67 fossils (so 7 rows of 10)
132 gyroids (12 rows of 11 or vice versa)
45 Nintendo items + 14 balloon items=59 (6 rows of 10)
If there are any other constants that I can use maths for to better define boundaries, please let me know. Otherwise, I'm going to start shifting everything.
To alleviate the stress of zoning around the pond at the top right, I'm going to section that off for the "touching-only" zone.
Any and all suggestions are welcome, but I may not choose to implement them based on tediousness of work. Free projects often get the "free quality"...but I'm trying my best to make it easy for all.
Edit: Boneyard completely done. I'm going to move the Nintendo and balloon items to be just under the fossils for usage of better spacing so I can expand the current common pile.

Fuck if I know, it was at least 2 squares from my house, I cut down all the trees there, it wasn't on a cliff or river, no rocks around, and it was the first shrub planted. I think the game just wanted to piss me off.

Dumping the exotic series pieces I have in Omnar swap town thing.
Pending Omnar1's catalog, I may put the exotic series in the new "Catalog-touching only" area that I just remade in the top right corner. Small touch-ups need to be made, but it seems to be coming along quite swimmingly. ^_^
Also, I ditched the Nintendo + Balloon idea when I was pleasantly surprised to discover a small sliver of land that could hold the balloon items separate and non-interferingly to the right of the Boneyard. Still too lazy to care how many balloon items there are, but I'm venturing a pretty close guess of between 12 and 14 pieces, which this sliver of land handily accommodates.
Edit: To note, the "catalog-touching only" area is meant for what I consider 3 different things:
1. Items that others want to share, and would like to take back after their own determined period of time.
2. Series of the week (as suggested by @SilverWind)
3. Freshly donated rares that the owner didn't want anymore, but not so rare that they're unobtainable by any regular means. After a few days of being in "The Zone", I'll move them out to the FFFA (Finder's Free-For-All) with the rest of the common items.
@neuroticsilence, I have the End Table, but can't find the regular table that I could have sworn was in my inventory this morning. @Conn, fossil is waiting for you.
Anybody have any tips for getting a villager to move out? I've got Graham and I can't stand him. I've tried ignoring him and hitting him with my net....a lot. Any other suggestions?
Just want to reiterate that you should definitely not pick antique as your HHA VIP challenge. I've gone through the list of furniture and there are significantly less items in this category than any other. And I mean like, outside of regal and rococo sets there are less than 20 things pretty much.
I'll probably keep it because I'm stubborn but do yourselves a favour and pick hobby, natural or science instead.
Hobby in particular appears to cover about 40% of all items in the game.

Although a lot of the trendy category is Gracie exclusive, it's a totally doable category (includes sleek, modem, minimalist). I'd recommend it for being achievable but not hideous in appearance.
I'm collecting rococo items. I haven't started thinking about a larger strategy yet with my house, but so far it's rococo for the first room and zen for the upstairs.

It's a very difficult set to acquire because it only appears as a spotlight item. If you like we can help each other out and hold each others pieces so we can order them from the catalogue.
