I did my first special weapons speedrun of the Wii version of RE4 Tuesday afternoon. I used only the Handcannon and infinite launcher, and didn't save or reload any chapters. Finished at 2 hours, 16 minutes with one death (Krauser fight, didn't realize I was low on health and missed an A+B command).
I've played through this game maybe a dozen times, and I still can't do the flying bug cave part in 4-2 without getting fucked with several times.
Also, on my money-making runthrough prior to my speedrun, I finally decided to buy the treasure maps from the merchant. I now highly endorse this.
Is it worth it to ever pick up the TMP? I'm about to free Clair from her cell on the island (just got the keycard from that spiky regenerator) and my bag space is pretty limited right now.

"Writhe in my cage of torment, my friend." That's my favorite line, I don't know why.
Delivery?
If I remember right, that line is delivered something like "Have fun at the movies" would be.
That's probably it
I guess telling a person to writhe (meaning: to move in a twisting or contorted motion) in a cage of torment, then calling them a friend... just kinda sounds awesome.
I've been sticking with it, doing a little better now. It helped when I learned how to bait a villager into attacking, back off, then run in and shank them with the knife.
I saved and quit last night because everything got all dark and stormy and it was 3 AM.
Oh, and whoever said on a random page back when I was skimming this topic that you can 'soften up' Del Lago by standing on the dock and firing into the lake.... Fuck you, I almost pissed my pants. =P
I picked this up last night and played a bit before going to see the fireworks. I like the controls but I have definitely gotten rusty at this. I lost my head to the chainsaw guy 3 freaking times in the village! I got to the area with first merchant last night and I'm thinking about going without the rifle, since aiming is so precise now any way. I'm not sure if I should improve my shotgun or just save up cash for now. I can't remember if cash is scare enough in this game that I really need to save it all until the best guns are available or if I can throw it around a little bit at this point. I'm actually tempted to max the shotgun this time through the game, since I've always waited for the striker before and a change of pace wouldn't be a bad thing, especially since the striker becomes available so late and I like the idea of being able to do full damage at range.
Also, a question, are any of the guns different now in terms of stats or exclusive upgrades compared to the GC version?

Use money as needed. It's probably best not to be capricious about it, but the game gives you a fuckton of cash and there's little reason to horde it all.
Bolt action rifle maxes out at 30 damage and the Red9 at 6.5 in this version, I believe.
Well you do get a ton of money throughout the game theprice, so upgrading now isn't going to hurt that much. But don't get it one step from upgrading to exclusive, then sell it for another gun. That would just be a waste of money.
The Riot Gun does more damage at long range, than it does on the GCN version, but I think that's about it. Oh and the Red9 doesn't recoil anymore, since you're using your Wii-mote to aim. So if you get the Red9 it's almost a necessity to buy the stock for it, so you get precise aiming.

That's an RE4 rite of passage. You may now be called a man.

I must not be a man yet. I've played through this game like 6 times and have never done it.

I'm assuming
He gets pissed eats you and the entire dock before you even have a chance to scream.

I didn't do that, but that sounds awesome! I'll have to go back to an old save and see if I can do it.

Should I be upgrading the normal handgun or the free Punisher I got? The puncturing through enemies is nice, but my Handgun seems to have slightly better stopping power. Any preferences?
Also, the TMP. I killed half the villagers in one area with one shotgun blast and they dropped over a hundred TMP bullets, I've been going to town.

Keep which ever one you like, until you can buy the Red9 Which is in Chapter 2-1 or 2-2. Then buy that sucker, and upgrade it.
Can't beat 6.5 damage from a handgun.

Punisher is the worst gun in the game in my opinion. Fully upgraded, you need to hit 3 enemies with every shot you fire in order for it to be equal to the Red9.

But think of it this way:
If you shoot one guy in the head, and it goes back and hits 4 others... Then you've done 4 shots in one, therefore making it stronger than the Red9 in that aspect.
I was just thinking of something, if random ammo drops are determined based on what you have in your inventory, and you got rid of everything but a single non-handgun weapon (magnum, maybe), would you get ammo drops for it at the same frequency as usual for that gun, and therefore get much fewer ammo drops total (and more cash) or would you get as many ammo drops as ever but they'd all be of that ammo type?

You'd be more likely to get more magnum ammo, but no it won't be all magnum ammo.
I've never bought the TMP, but at the end of the game I'll have sold off about 500-600 TMP ammo. You also pick up Rifle ammo alot.
Is it the enemies that have a random ammo drop? Or is it everything, including boxes? I've noticed that some of the boxes are the same each time I do a run.
*shrugs* Either way it's not safe to carry just one gun.

There are places where ammo is just lying around or in boxes or barrels that may not change no matter what you are carrying, but I think that enemies drop ammo based on what you have in your inventory. I may be wrong though, since in the past I've bought pretty much every new weapon type as it became available so the sudden appearance of ammo drops for the weapon could have just been triggered by getting to the point in the game where you can buy the weapon, and not by actually having one with me.
Honestly, I wouldn't want to stick with just one weapon type but limiting the number of weapon types I carry, for example by not buying a rifle or TMP, might be helpful beyond just saving money if I could get more shotgun shells and handgun rounds as a result.
Man, I need to do a no-pistol runthrough just to glory in the TMP. TMP/Shotty/Magnum would be awesome...maybe I'll start up a new playthrough on the cube version when I get home tonight. If ammo drops based on what you're carrying that could be one AWESOME setup.

Yeah I found this too - the difficulty really ramps up at the Island, but doesn't seem like a massive leap on the Village/Castle.

Yeah, the Island is a pain in the ass. Every hit does 1/3 of your health (or more) even with your life "maxed" out from yellow herbs.
That's usually when you get he tactical vest too.

You know you can climb up and knife it right?
You can also run up his back and knife it. When he bends over, run up to him and hit A, then waggle like crazy.
EDIT: Beat'd.
No.
