I'm glad I gave Uncharted another shot once I got that grip for my Vita. Game was awesome! Enemies are a little UC1 level of bullet spongey, but outside of that it was great. I thought all the Vita specific stuff they crammed in there was going to be lame and gimmicky, but I found myself using the touchscreen rather frequently to make Drake climb the longer sections of ledges.
Hopefully the Vita continues to pick up steam, and we see another Uncharted title announced for it.
Now I'm torn between finishing Ys, starting a new game and finishing Gravity Rush or finishing Sly Cooper.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

Meruru is a flat out massive upgrade over Totori. Here's a "Short" list:
The progression is a lot more structured. This may be a bad thing depending on your point of view. In Totori it was very very easy to get lost or overwhelmed with what to do, which actually fits with Totori due to her circumstances...
Combat is a lot better. Supports are much more usable in offence as well as defence, so that's another resource you have to work with instead of just using it to safeguard a squishy alchemist (Meruru is NOT squishy and can take hits better than some of her party members). Do you support defend against this attack? Do you throw down two support actions and hit the enemy with a bigger nuke from an item? What about two more support actions for Meruru's 3rd tier item use? Combat is also a bit more strategic I felt compared to Totori. There were times where I was manipulating the flow of actions just to survive.
Party member abilities are a lot better defined, and you get access to more tools earlier in the game. Heck, you start off with AoE damage and AoE disables (sleep) as 'free' abilities with the first two party members.
Synthesis has been rebalanced somewhat and it's harder to break, but the core ideas still remains from Totori. You can go really really crazy on synthesis later on when you get access to the truly awesome traits. In Totori I tended to create 'perfect' boot strap items to stack the item levels and to seed great traits. With Meruru, I found that I had to synthesise on the fly. Less pre-manufactured bootstraps, more individual crafting.
Chim has been nerfed. You get Hom instead for the lovely random gathering and synthesis. Chim is still around, but demands payment that is not only pie. (Chim takes over as the sole Wholesale system proprietor)
Your container holds... 1999 items. No, this still will not be enough.
Enhancement gear like basket upgrades and travelling shoes are equippable items. This means they carry over to new playthroughs and don't clog up your basket. They also do matter how well you synthesise them!
The time cost for gathering has been reduced from a base of 5 time units to 4. This matters a great deal in the early game.
You don't need to buy recipe books. Money is a lot less stressed in the beginning of the game. However, due to Chim, you're going to need a lot of money for high powered synthesis late game.
You can have three alchemists in your party. Bombs, bombs, bombs oh and more bombs.
Rorona had the Tera Bomb, Totori had N2. Meruru plays with nuclear fusion (a miniature star).
Totori-sensei is awesome.
Note that this doesn't mean you can skip over Totori. Don't. A huge chunk of the joy in Meruru is the continuing character presence from Rorona to Totori and finally to Meruru. There are a good amount of character referencing and build up on stories from the previous games. Also, the ending theme is called "Metro" - MEruru TOtori ROrona
I've been contemplating adding an Atelier game to my Vita, and I was looking at these two. Note that I haven't touched this series since Iris on the PS2.
I was thinking of just getting the most recent (Best?) plus on the vita, and just ignoring Totori. Should I not do that? Note: my gaming time is limited (Kid #1 on the way!)
It's worth mentioning, that Iris was a spinoff to the main series, and isn't similar to the games on the vita. I'm not saying you shouldn't try it though!

Technically, neither the Iris trilogy (Atelier 6-8) nor the Mana Khemia series (Atelier 9-10) are spinoffs. But they play very differently (and are male-targeted while most of the rest of the series is female-targeted). The only real 'spinoffs' are the portable-original games like the DS ones.
Now Ar tonelico? Totally not Atelier, but by the same company and also heavily features crafting like all of their RPGs.
Was Ar tonelico good? I remember seeing that it had some decent music, but I've never really seen the game.
Ar Tonelico 1 and 2 were extremely good, unfortunately 3 was pretty lackluster(though it wasn't a bad game)
Unfortunately 2 Suffered from a really poor QA job - like, NISA fucked up good. There are two major bugs, the first being that the game has a tendency to load-pause for a split second just as a boss is landing a large attack,(which is pretty annoying for a game that relies on specific timing for block mechanics), and the second is that the optional boss(that you're also required to fight a couple of times initially for story reasons) will freeze the game after the third turn - so you have to beat it in three turns or the PS2 will lock.
I didn't have too much of a problem getting through the game despite that, but they can be incredibly irritating at times.
There are ways around these bugs, but only involving ISO stuff - if you're just playing it off of the disc in a PS2 there's nothing you can do about the pausing(though I hear there's a gameshark code for the boss freeze)

But, will I miss much skipping Totori? (I will probably never play Rorona)

I'm betting you probably will play Rorona at some point, since Gust is completely remaking the game for the Vita.
But otherwise no, there are character cameos and some light references, but nothing significant that will throw you out of the story.

I can vouch for this opinion as well. The first game was quite good but lacked length. The second game was awesome and about twice as long as the first, but had a god-awful localization and too many glitches... and when I mean bad localization, I mean you'll catch the occasional Japanese line in the game not in English that they just flat-out MISSED. In the first two games the Reyvateils had different songs, and you changed their stats partially by making them cosplay (in two they only leveled up by bathing together with grathnode crystals).
The third game is... a mixed bag. It's clear that trying to put the game on the PS3 was a bad idea, but you can see the potential it had. It tried to use an active time arena battle system like Star Ocean or Tales, but this really doesn't work when you have someone in your party standing perfectly still and defenseless singing. Sadly this was also when they decided that innuendo wasn't enough, and went full retard with questionable gameplay. In three the two main Reyvateils have four personalities that completely change their form and personality, only have one song per form that's moddable, and their song power increases by... stripping. Yeah, it's as bad as it sounds, which is a shame because IMO it has the best story once it gets passed mocking itself in the beginning. I still love the series despite how wrong it can be at times, and still have a goal to try and platinum AT3 just to say I did.
Allow me to add with the Ar Tonelico series that the one thing it really got right in every game was the soundtrack. Basically a team GUST has on their payroll including composers and professional singers literally made a new language (w/ alphabet) for the series called Hymnos. Every song the Reyvateils sing is in this language and is fully translatable, and through the series they slowly experimented with multiple genres of music, from opera to rock to techno. It's all incredibly well done, and one of the big reasons I keep playing the games.

Yes, and in my opinion the first game had the best soundtrack out of all of them. Additionally depending on which Reyvateil was singing it, the same song could sound completely different. I.e. some story events will have the same song sung by a different Reyvateil based on player choices through the storyline.
I'm playing Soul Sacrifice and the gameplay seems interesting, but the overall aesthetic is a HUGE turn off. Is the game pretty much all arena combat like Monster Hunter, or is there some change later on. Right now I'm trudging through the story to fight the monsters.

No, it's basically arena combat the whole way through. Though I wouldn't call Monster Hunter arena combat in the same manner.

AT2 remains my favourite game on the PS2 despite the really shitty localisation job that NISA did. Incidentally it was also the game that introduced me into the main line Atelier series since I was playing Mana Khemia while waiting for the AT2 localisation (played the JPN version of AT2)
Ar no Surge is looking more and more like an Ar tonelico game, and more specifically AT2 so that's something I'm really looking forward to. PS3 so yay, that's going to be an import.

Not every hymmnos song is in hymmnos. There's a few in AT3 that did not have a single scrap of hymmnos in them; namely, every song that was not sung by either Shimotsuki Haruka, Shikata Akiko or Mitose Noriko. Ok, one exception. CUTTYPUMP, but that song doesn't count.
The PSP version of Mana Khemia was what got me into all of the Atelier/Tonelico games - I didn't even really know any of them existed until I played Mana Khemia and realized that Gust did a whole line of this PS2 stuff.
I'm still disappointed that the PSP version of Mana Khemia 2 was never localized - but I managed to secure the PS2 version so it's not so bad.

Which is pretty unfortunate but also further highlights the comparative mediocrity of the third game. They went off in directions they really didn't have any business going in - which would have worked for a new series but just kind of butchered Tonelico.
And I'm really hoping that Ar NoSurge gets localized - which may be more and more likely despite Ciel Nosurge being ignored, thanks to Tecmo Koei pushing Gust to get everything they can overseas. I'm pretty sure the Vita port of Atelier Ayesha that's hitting Japan in March will also be getting a localization.

Huh... never heard of Ar NoSurge, though I did hear of Ciel Nosurge. The PS3 game sounds like more than a social game, though I could be wrong. I guess they got away with making more games by making the setting on another planet or elsewhere, huh?
As for the songs in 3, there were enough done in Hymnos that I didn't really pay mind to the others. They did try other kinds of songs like Exec Z, which I didn't mind, but they still had a few homeruns in the soundtrack like Flip Arphage.

It's a pseudo-sequel to Ciel NoSurge. It's going to be an actual RPG rather than a creepy Tomagotchi-style virtual girlpet. It looks like it's going to borrow heavily from AT2 with song magic and something akin to a dive system, as well as a very similar battle system. I'm really hoping it gets localized.
Seeing all these Gust fans come out of the woodworks makes me smile.
I guess thete is a series us jrpg fans can agree on. (lol)
GUST has its issues, but I reward them when they make a game fun enough. Their utter fascination with innuendo has created some questionable content from them, but they seem to be learning. Escha & Logy will be the first Atelier game to get a male protagonist since the Mana Khemia days. They were also sure that Ar Tonelico 3 was the last of the series, yet they keep finding ways to make more.
BTW, love your Little Witch Academia avatar. Looking forward to the sequel to that, since their Kickstarter did awesome last August.

And the two Metafalicas are not the same song, but they are at the same time
I personally feel the hymmnos line up in AT2 beats the crap out of AT1's with the exception of Phantasmagoria. Also I felt that each of the hymmnos had a lot more weight behind them in what they meant in context of the world and the events that are happening.
AT3's was really lacking. Only one Mitose Noriko song, which is a travesty in itself; and a rather diluted presence of the other forerunners.
Even if AT3's story has the entire world on its death bed

I mean, I still gotta get one for myself now because I literally bought Persona less than 4 days ago and have about 20 titles on the machine.
