I like all skills, probably too much, but not for bosses. Random is what you you want.

Probably. I can't even tell if I'm doing it right! Saving outside the elevator is good enough. Right? I noticed it's faster to just run out of the basement and take the elevator back down. Does that reset the thing or do I have to reload?
Random question. How improved is Persona 4 Golden vs just the original? Yesterday I setup my PS2 for the first time in years in order to try out Killer 7 that my friend gifted to me (yeah... wtf, only some of that being the positive variant of that feeling). Which made me think that instead of waiting for the Vita situation to get better/cheaper, I could just score a cheap copy of 4 off Amazon. But if Golden is a massive improvement, I can wait (plz don't suggest 'get both!' in other words).
For reference, my first experience in the series is P3P, which I haven't finished but intend to eventually.

Before the elevator should be fine, according to random people on the net.
How is Soul Hackers? It's on sale for $30 on the eShop and it's that or Etrian Odyssey IV for the same price. :P
And yeah, P4G is friggin' amazing.
I'd get Etrian Odyssey IV. Soul Hackers is great though.
Soul Hackers = Best Atlus RPG until Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne came out.
Etrian Odyssey IV = Best 3DS game... until the next Etrian Odyssey comes out.
Both EOIV and Soul Hackers are great. I have both and only dropped Soul Hackers because of all the other things I'm playing, so really, whichever one strikes your fancy more.
And yes, P4G is a remarkable improvement over and addition to P4, especially if you like abusing the game mechanics to become a nearly-unstoppable juggernaut (as well as all the other obvious reasons it's just better).

I've been diving into SMT IV lately and I have to say, getting to Tokyo felt like the start of a completely different game. It was like the starting area was a noob zone in a MMO. Once I started trying to traverse Tokyo there might as well have been a big neon sign that says, "The real SMT starts here, sucker. Good luck."
Needless to say, I felt about as fish-out-of-water as the characters did. I guess I should note that it wasn't a difficulty spike, but a huge spike in the, "Where do they want me to go? They want me to do what?" department. Thank god the game came with that strategy guide/art book combo thing. I probably would've been stuck at least half a dozen times without it.

I know when I play these games I don't use majority of the demons and fuse and recruit. They are just there to have skills useful for fusion and to allow fusion into useful demons. Its like genetic diversity. Smt iv was great for that since it allows you to hold on to so many demons at once and the fusion is super easy.

I'd disagree with Weisskaiser if its your first run. While the game is easier, the fusion system is better, and there's additional content, a lot of the new events really mess up the pacing and feel of the story. The opening and the concert are the biggest offenders in my mind. Plus the writing for most of them just feels off when compared to the vanilla stuff, they usually make the characters feel an exaggerated version of themselves (Holy crap did Yosuke get the short end of the stick on that one. That bike arc was pretty bad). Its not a huge deal but it does lessen the experience a bit.
IMO If it isn't your first playthrough or if you really want the new content, yeah, go ahead and get Golden. But if it is your first playthrough then you'd be better off playing the original; I think the story holds up a bit better with out the extra stuff. Plus its only like $20 on amazon right now.
While were on the subject, play FES instead of P3P if you can. Unlike P4/P4G its a huge difference. I started with P3P, played until the 2nd boss shadow, then tried FES and never looked back. You aren't limited to one weapon type, you get animated cutscenes, the 3D world is a nice bonus, P3P's VN format really detracts from the presentation, the graphics are better in FES, FES has "The Answer" (an extra chapter, very grindy compared to the main story but continues the game's events), and you miss out on most of the awesome crit animations MC has.
P3P is also much easier because of party control. I'm fairly sure the AI in that is from 4 too, which was miles worse than 3's AI. So like 4 you're gonna have to take manual control of them. Personally I don't like that, but if you hate being unable to completely control your party it can be a plus. The only 2 other advantages P3P has over the other versions is that its portable and allows you to play as FeMC (female main character). Just watch out for the PSN version of P3FES if you decide to get it, it has a disappearing-save bug so if you get that one make sure to keep multiple save files.

Not only that, but a majority of the demons have a final move that takes two additional levels or so to learn, and the experience scaling is totally crazy for demons so it's not worth hanging on to them. They'll sometimes need almost twice as much as they did before for that last level, and the move is almost never worth it. 90% of the time you'll see the swirly icon and think it's to null their weakness, but no it's just stupid Mana Aid or Speed Lesson. Very rarely do you get something actually good off of them. I would only bother with Food types, since their type gives away what their whole purpose is.
A cool part of demon negotiation in Soul Hackers is that demons that you talk to remember you when you talk to them in another battle. I talked to one and it asked for money then ran off. I talked to it again and it said it felt sorry for me and joined me on the spot. I wish they kept that part in later games.
I just got Soul Hackers because of the sale. The setting and characters seem pretty good so far. It seems a lot lighter and goofier then most of the non persona smt games I've played. Its old style dungeon crawling though.

Yeah, that was one thing from Nocturne I missed in IV. I remember getting through a negotiation and realizing at the end my stock was full. The next time they'd join me on the spot when I had room.
The funny thing is that SMT4 does have that, it's just barely ever seen. Kin-Ki remembered me a few times when I would negotiate with him trying to get one of those random demon quests. He joined on the spot without negotiating.

Yeah, I had a Pixie do that for me too when I wask backtracking. I began negotiation and she goes, "Oh, it's you again. Let's be friends!"
Boom, no fuss, no muss. Of course, I slapped her in a fusion chamber almost instantaneously, but it was nice of her to decide to come quietly...

Definitely disagree on both accounts. Persona 4 Golden & P3P play much better than the PS2 versions and are worth it if only for that. Only reason you should play the PS2 version of Persona 4 is if you don't own a Vita. Persona 3: FES vs. P3P is a closer call but unless you really need the better visuals or the post-game scenario, I'd say P3P is the better choice.

Considering how easy it is to get this stuff in SMT IV I'm not even mad. Probably won't bother because I don't really care about the fiends.

Soul Hackers is way more fun than Nocturne. Soul Hackers has people in it that you can actually interact with.

It's a stretch, but I agree that SH does have a LOT more people to talk to. It's a fantastic game, regardless. Chock full of cyberpunkian goodness.
