Check out TSW's system. Yes, switching is not super-fast (although you can save builds), but it's also not the kind of set up where the player is expected to rapidly change out abilities between every single fight...maybe you kit a couple different skills for different bosses, but you pretty much build the character you want to play with the skills you want, and make that your base "class".
TSW's skill system is far and away the best thing they did. Reminds me in many ways of Guild Wars 1, which is another skill system I loved.
So EQ Next Landmark is pretty much Minecraft? I can get behind that.
I'm surprised at how much of a "game" Landmark is sounding like lately. More and more like a Minecraft MMO, and less and less like my original impression of just a fancy "map editor".

I always assumed it would be like 'minecraft' but I didn't think it was going to be 'MMO social Minecraft'. Watching that 3h20 scene time-laps was so cool. I can not wait to get my hands on this. The more I hear about Landmark, the more I have these images in my head. The more I feel like a 10 year old kid with a bucket full of lego ready to make the world of my imagination.
The only thing I wasn't clear on is if those (instanced?) islands stick around at release. They made a pretty big point talking about how the best stuff would be incorporated into Norrath... but what about everything else?
Maybe they should take a page from comic books and call it "Ultimate Everquest" or something.

Or, you know, Everquest 3.
I don't care what it's called in the end if it ends up being good, but I agree with Anon on the name being dumb. If you can't think of something better then just adding the number 3, then just stick to adding the number 3.

I think the idea is that they want to distance the game from being compared to Everquest 2 since it is shaping up to be pretty much nothing like it whatsoever.
Which honestly is probably a good idea from a marketing perspective. The title Everquest Next will get people to look at it before just dismissing it.
*edit* This is not to say that I think Everquest Next is a good name, just that they definitely should not use Everquest 3.

It's the DS/Gameboy thing. "This is, like, a third pillar. We're totally gonna do EverQuest 3, maybe, perhaps".

If it's so different, then make it a completely new, not Norrath based game (this Norrath isn't even the same one anyways) and make it "From the makers of Everquest, it's ___________________ !" and then say your taking inspiration from EQ and EQ2 and adding all these cool new things. Plaster "From the makers of Everquest" in big letters right before the title wherever it is advertised.
All they are doing with the name is just adding the nostalgia trigger that is the name "Everquest" and then adding "Next" to it, which sounds dumb. So just make it a subtitle.

Everquest was a big revolutionary game.
Everquest 2 wasn't.
They're hoping that Everquest Next will be.
Then they can fuck it up again with Everquest Next 2.

Ah yes but see they DO want the customer to think it is Everquest, but not just the next Everquest in the Series, but something new and different that has not been seen before.
There is a very clear message they are trying to send with the name choice, they don't want to depart from the Everquest brand itself but they DO want to distance themselves from Everquest 2. The last thing they want to do is try and sell a brand new IP because as you mentioned the nostalgia factor is key in getting older players on board, but at the same time they don't want those players to think it will be just an upgraded Everquest 2.
They want the customer to have the thought process "Everquest Next? Why isn't it Everquest 3? What are they doing differently? I should look into this"
Again that being said I don't really agree with the name they DID choose, even if I understand why they chose it.

It makes me feel like this is just another iteration. In a few years, all my experience and work in the world of Everquest Next will be rendered trivial by Another Everquest.
To me it just makes that wall between business and consumer just a little more transparent. It's too obvious were to be milked for a few bucks until the next thing comes along.
Probably not a popular opinion, but that's how the name hits me. And it's a damn shame.

The way the game plays will determine for me if I feel like I'm being milked for money or not, not the name of the game, but I feel you.
We're all just players in this game of capitalism.

Just a reminder, Everquest 2 came out before WoW.
When SOE was working on the next EQ game they scrapped it because it was ended up being nothing more than Everquest 3 and they didn't want that. So we get EQN instead.

Oh man, I can't wait for Landmark. Hope we don't have to wait too long for player-made armor sets in the Player Studio, a game that lets me create my own structures and outfits will keep me around for a hell of a long time.
I think this is a step in the right direction. The market is saturated, so anything that was just EQ3 would be doomed to failure or anemic subs again...
What about Heroes of Norrath, or something similar? Tie into the game world without necessarily using Everquest in the title? Everquest Next sounds like an in-house project name.

People don't know what Norrath is, but they have heard of Everquest.
I was under the impression that EQ Next Landmark would continue on as a separate thing even after EQ Next launches. So everything should stick around?
Yes that is correct. Landmark is its own thing and will continue on after the release of Eqnext. It basically is going to be a more social sandboxy MMO in its own right and likely an idea labratory they can raid for stuff to add in to eqnext.

At least when it wasn't crashing from being such an absurd resource hog.
