Anyway, I agree with you and I am very much ready for a sandbox MMO.
Same! I am super looking forward to it. Not sure if the indy scene is going to get there first, or if it'll be EQN, or maybe Blizzard, but somebody's eventually going to bring a worldsim that isn't butts!
P.S. @Jdarksun I will gather resources and you can convert it into pretty things. I am considering spending the 50$ because I want the tech armor. We'll see how long that desire lasts as it gets closer.
We can be mining buddies! I also love building stuff, but I'm not sure how pretty it's going to be. Maybe eventually. But first thing, I'll probably build a massive monument to Cazic-Thule or Rallos Zek.
Did EverQuest feel like a theme park compared to UO? I never played it, but from what I know about it, UO sounds like the most sand boxy MMO anybody has had any amount of success with.
Nah. I'm not positive it started with WoW, but the whole "you are now tall enough to ride this linear one-off excursion" thing going on with WoW's dungeons exemplified it. The thematic dungeon/locations in EQ was just another place people set up camps (at least, for the most part).
Which was its own problem. But it still felt like a coherent world instead of DisneyLand.
Edit: I should say that I love me some DisneyLand.
Edit 2: I also didn't answer the question. UO was more of a sandbox, because you didn't have to spend all your time killing shit. EVE is kinda close, minus the whole coherent world thing.
I'm definitely sick of MMOs that are just single player games with other people running around. The novelty of "it's a living world cause I can see other players!" has definitely worn off. We need more ways to meaningfully interact with other people, and instances and storylines/quests where you're the important hero don't help with that.
Just watched the 11/13 video. Was kind of excited before hand to go in, and do some high resolution minecrafty things while waiting for EQN. But hearing them say that you can pretty much build your own MMO inside it? Yeah, I'm in for $100.

I liked how TSW handled the "you're the hero" schtick by basically having the NPCs tell you that no, you are not a unique snowflake. Many quest NPCs would mention that you were not the only one they talked to. I remember one NPC saying something along the lines of, "Oh geez, another one? Look I don't know where you people are coming from, but if you want to help, fine". Your faction handlers would often reinforce the fact that you are not hot shit and that the world is constantly saved from unimaginable terrors dozens of times each day. It is just part of your job. :P
It was a nice touch.

You have no idea how mad I was when EA bought Origin and immediately cancelled UO2. Then the irony of many years later starting ANOTHER UO MMO, and shortly before beta ... cancelling that one too.
I'm a weird mix of a puzzled, outraged, and excited about the founder's pack thing. It's like....a pre-order. For a free game. Except the pre-order costs money? Or something.
To summarize: WAT.

It's a pass to get in on the ground floor of an alpha for an untested, sandbox game your going to help them build by creating slightly more complicated then Minecraft style 3D assets in the Forgelight game engine using Landmark's toolkit that might maybe get into the full Everquest Next game whenever it comes out.
The more you pay, the more (most likely) temporary item and service boosts and cosmetic fluff you get, and the sooner you get guaranteed access to the alpha and later closed beta starting in late February.
It's their way of trying to help fund an ongoing project they feel people will buy into the more they actively help develop it in both a passive, traditional, scream on forums and fill out surveys way and an active, Landmark approved way.
a little extra information coming out in one of the gaming magazines in the next month. confirms a few new classes including the one i care most about, the beast lord
I wanted to like Chloromancer, but the lack of on-demand heals was a really bad weakpoint for them. Unless they eventually fixed that. If you had to stop DPS for whatever reason, your tank could die, which is a crappy way to design a healer.
I'm excited for this but I'm not sure if I want to delve into the Landmark founders pack when they haven't said much about regular NEXT. What if I like NEXT better but plunked down cash on Landmark stuff that doesn't xfer over to NEXT. I'm so confused about their two products.

I'd prefer to roll a more subtle approach; a massive castle, filled with all manner of medieval furniture and finery and many different rooms. And in each room, tiny wangs will be hiding, on bookcases, over fireplaces, on knight armor displays, on banners... everywhere waiting for some curious eye to notice that those funny looking candles are actually quite phallic in nature. And lit for your pleasure.
I'm contemplating getting a founder pack as well. Maybe the middle one.

I thought that was bizarre as hell a decade and change ago, but still love the music.

Carry on in Norrath that time honoured Roman tradition of phallic imagery so big you can hang a light or an inn sign on it.
