Special EventsSettlers of Catan World Championship Pre-Qualifier (Each day) - PAX Prime and Mayfair Games will once again host a Catan Tournament. This year's tournament is a Catan World Championship (CWC) Pre-Qualifier. The winner of the tournament will receive complimentary travel, hotel accommodations and show badge (compliments of Mayfair Games) to travel to one of the two CWC Qualifiers (Origins Game Fair 2014 or Gen Con Indy 2014) to compete for a seat at the CWC Finals in 2014. This Open event is a Swiss-style 3-round tournament for up to 64 players. You may compete on either Friday, Saturday or Sunday to qualify for Monday, where the Top 16 overall players will compete in the final event.
Team Building Exercise (Fri) - Teams of four will rotate through a series of four co-operative board games: Sentinels of the Multiverse, Forbidden Island, Pandemic, and Elder Sign. You can sign up in Teams, and your team will play three of the four games. Whichever team successfully wins the most games will be declared the winner.
Saturday Night Showdown (Sat) - Come out for our mystery casual game extravaganza! This Saturday night PAX tradition will give you the chance to play through a gauntlet of four lighter/casual board games. The catch -- you won't know what games you're playing until the tournament begins! After four rounds, the top players will advance to a Super Secret Special Mystery Final Round game - guaranteed to be a spectacle you won't want to miss.
Join the Resistance! (Sun) - Up to 70 players will get a chance to show off their deduction and bluffing skills playing The Resistance. Each round you will be sorted into groups of up to ten players. The winning side from each game will advance to the next round, while the losers will wallow in self-doubt and regret. It'll be fun! Tournament game copies and prizes provided by Indie Boards & Cards.
Space Cadets: Dice Duel Team Tournament (Mon) - Come play in this quick, fast-paced team dice game, as teams will battle head-to-head in this brand new game. Sign up in teams of four, for a fun, refreshing way to conclude PAX on Monday. Tournament game copies provided by Stronghold Games.
Dragon Dice - Novice Tournament (Fri and Sat)
Learn to play this fast paced strategy dice game from SFR Inc. in a fun tournament setting. New players borrow a starter pack of dice and experience the thrill of Dragon Dice combat while learning the details of the game. Swiss format. No experience required - rules will be taught. Materials provided. 12 players maximum.
Dragon Dice - Open Invitational Prime Tournament (Sun) - Bring your best 36-health army (no more than 18-health of magicians) plus all summoning pool components and compete for prizes and the title of Dragon Dice Tournament Champion! Swiss Format. Experience IS required (you play regularly and/or know all the current rules). Materials are NOT provided for this event, you must bring your own. 16 players maximum.
Miniatures Demos - There will be demos of
Malifaux,
Infinity, and
Golem Arcana taking place throughout the weekend in our Miniatures area. Come check out some new games!
Some additional notes:Heats - This year, to make the best use of your time at PAX, we have changed some of our larger tournaments to use a Heat system. For events with First Round Heats: You may join ANY Heat of an event to qualify for later rounds. For example, on Friday, Dominion will hold Heats at 11:00, 12:30, 2:00, and 3:30. The winners of games in each of these Heats will return for the Semifinals at 5:00, followed by the finals at 6:00. This way, if you play in the 11:00 Heat, and win, you know that you won't need to return until the semis at 5:00. But if the 11:00 Heat has filled up, hang around, and you can join the next Heat beginning at 12:30.
Expansions - Many of the tournaments will use expansions - inquire at signup for specifics about which expansions may be used, or check back here on this thread closer to PAX, where additional details may be provided.
So please come join us for some organized play with PAX's Tabletop Tournaments, held on the third floor of the Hyatt Olive 8 (8th and Olive). Signups open 10:00 AM each day for that day’s Events. Please arrive 15 minutes before event for check-in.
Feel free to ask questions below, or chime in with what you're excited to play in our organized events!

Looking forward to playing in Catan, Dominion, Tsuro & Ticket to Ride tournaments
Signups for that each day's tournaments will open up at 10:00 am of that day, and remain open for each event until 10 minutes before it starts. This will take place in one specific location: designated tables in the Hyatt Olive 8 Ballroom. There will likely be a small queue of people waiting to sign up at 10:00 each morning. As most every attendee will have single day passes (and not necessarily ALL of the days), and there are very few 4-day passes, there will not be signups the evening before anymore like we had done at prior PAXes.
We are taking steps to speed up the seating and starting of tournaments and rounds - we've come up with a solution that should help quite a bit, and will be straightforward for any attendee to follow.
Magic the Gathering events will be handled by Cascade Games, over in the WSCC Conference Center -- They will have their own registration system.
Awesome
Attended: PAX Prime 2010/'11/'12/'13/'14
I'll check with our miniatures tournament officiant, and get an answer for you shortly!
Question though, how many expansions will be played?
For example Agricola has more than 6 expansions to the game, will all of them be used?
A list of things, should you be of the gifting persuasion
It's possible that these may grow to 12 or 16 person caps by the time PAX arrives, depending on PAX-secured resources (i.e. the number of copies of the game we have available). Regardless, the winners of each board will face off. So it's possible that it will be a 2 player, 3 player, or 4 player game for the finals. But our posted limits are conservative.
In these two specific games, the full length of the tournament will be two rounds total.
EDITED for clarity: Single Elimination means - if you lose, you are eliminated. For each board, one person advances, everyone else gets to go play in another tournament, or enjoy all of the rest PAX has to offer.
Lords of Waterdeep: Scoundrels of Skullport Tournament
Think you’re a master of Lords of Waterdeep? Participate in this 3-round tournament to determine who will be crowned the PAX Prime 2013 champion! The entry round uses the new Undermountain expansion from Scoundrels of Skullport. Winning players then advance to the semifinal round, which uses the Skullport expansion from Scoundrels of Skullport. The final table uses both new expansions combined! Each round is 2 hours long. Winners will receive prizes.
WHEN:
Entry Rounds: Friday, Saturday, & Sunday 11 am
Semifinal Round: Sunday 3 pm
Final Round: Monday 11 am
WHERE: Lower Level of The Conference Center. We are the level below the Magic the Gathering play area. The Conference Center is at the corner of 8th and Pike and for those who know the WSCC well, available from the main exhibit hall via escalator.

Battle group means 1 warcaster and his Jacks. You can't have a second warcaster, even if you could make it fit in 25 points.
I'm afraid the events are free to PAX Attendees only. We are inside PAX and normal security applies. If you can't make the semi-finals and finals because you don't have a badge those days, we're not able to bypass that.
We will likely be giving out promos and other stuff all weekend. I would still stop by and try the Skullport expansion in our boardgame open play area and see what we have.

Aaron,
For this very reason, almost all of the tournaments held at the Olive 8 take place within the same day, and do no carry over to other days. The only exceptions to this are the Settlers of Catan tournament being run by Mayfair, and, as mentioned immediately above this post, the Lords of Waterdeep tournament run by the RPGA. If you do choose to play in the earlier rounds for these events on Friday or Saturday, I'd recommend that you inform the event's officiant at the time that you sign up for it, so they are informed and can ensure that they advance other players to the Semifinals who have the ability to attend them.

Oh well, plenty of other stuff to do at PAX.

"Oh what a day, what a LOVELY DAY!"
As listed in the Full Schedule of Events linked in the original post of this thread:
Saturday, 11:00am - 7:00pm
Warhammer 40,000
10am check-in. 2000pt doubles (1000 pts each player), timed rounds
Sunday, 11:00am - 7:00pm
Warhammer 40,000
10am check-in. 1750pt armies, timed rounds
These events will be run by Enforcers who are experienced at running numerous WH40k tournaments at game stores in the Seattle area, using terrain loaned from their game store. They will chime in here on this thread shortly and answer any specific questions you may have soon.
I was going to be picking that up soon. Silly question, nut it should be available for sale @ Pax?

Also, what of Fantasy? I suppose it's more challenging to get players for it in the US. Ah well.
Last year you could participate in both qualifier days, so I expect it to be the same this year. Note that they are 5 or 6 hour long commitments, though. That's a lot of PAX time.
JenniLyne is correct. Mayfair Games is running this, so they may overrule me on the spot, but I do recall that, yes, last year, if you scrub out in Friday, you could signup again for Saturday or Sunday. Just remember, signups do not open until 10:00 am each morning for that day's events. And we ask that you abide by Wheaton's Law - don't be a dick. Consider adding your name to the Waiting List instead of the main signup page, to let as many different people have a shot who didn't even have a chance to go down in flames the day before.
But you're going to do awesome on your first try anyway, so this is all moot
Monday's Speedmachine was a popular format at Lock & Load so I figured I would bring it to PAX. It is battlegroup only so bring a warcaster or warlock of your choice plus only warbeasts and warjacks.
Friday will be a regular steamroller tournament.
As for the 40K tournaments, we will have a doubles (we had a ton of people last year so I figured this would allow more players to join in!) and a regular tournament. These will be done swiss style.
I love Fantasy but unfortunately it's a lot harder to find players for it!
What is speedmachine? My assumption is you have a time limit to your turn, but exactly how fast do we need to be? My friends and I are new (Started playing warmachine at PAX'12) and haven't played in a speedmachine game before. thx
Edit:
I think I found my answer. If its the same as Lock & Loaded:
• 25 pt. army list, Battlegroup Only
• Baseline list requirements
• Close Quarters scenario
• Death Clock: 16 minutes per player

In regards to the 40k Tournament, the 6th edition Codex Space Marines is due for release, very likely the weekend of PAX. Will we be using the 6th edition codex or the 5th edition codex?
@mostlyharmless I would go with the 5th edition codex. If it does release the weekend of PAX, we might have issues with people using 5th vs 6th. Better to be safe!
