Prime 2013 Tabletop Info

This post is to let you know the what, who and where of everything Tabletop at PAX Prime 2013.

Washington State Convention Center - Levels 2 & 3
Tabletop HQ and the Lending Library are back in Room 204 this year. Dedicated freeplay rooms are rooms 205, 211 and 304 with more freeplay out in the hallways. The official (unofficial) Tabletop Twitter account is https://twitter.com/TT_HQ . Follow it for news, Tabletop pictures and general comedy.

The Annex (a.k.a. The Convention Center but no one calls it that)
In the Annex will be everything Wizards of the Coast. Magic: The Gathering on Level 1 then Dungeons & Dragons in the basement.

Olive 8 Hotel
This hotel is waaaay closer than last year's satellite location. The Olive 8 is kitty-corner from the Paramount (Main Theatre). This is where all of the Tabletop Tournaments are happening as well as a second Lending Library with a ton more freeplay space. So when you stop by Tabletop and it's full to the gills, please head over to the Olive 8 and check it out.

Looking For Group?
If you are down with the tweeting, we in Tabletop use a hashtag to find groups/players at PAX. Tweet with #ttlfg and the game you have and your location. For example: We need 2 players in room 304 for Fury of Dracula #ttlfg

Exhibitors:
Paizo, Go To Games, Green Ronin Games, Cool Mini or Not, Japanime, Fantasy Flight, Catalyst Games, Uncle's Games, Steve Jackson Games, 13th Age, Dragon Dice, Games on Demand, Reaper Minis, Gamma Ray Games, Soda Pop Mini, Ancient Wonders, Olympic Cards & Games, Cascade Games.

Also there seems to be a Nexus of Tabletop companies up on the Skybridge... you'll see what I mean when you get there.

I can answer any questions you all have here in the thread, just ask.

Thank you for posting this! I was really bummed last year when we had such a hard time finding games. Didn't realize until we got home that unlike East it was in another building.

How late will the Olive 8 location be open for free play?

PAX closes at midnight, so we stay open until then.

This is also a great thread to use if you have any Tabletop community events you want to run. If you want to get 7 other people together to play the copy of Twilight Imperium in the PAX TT library, here would be a great place to make a post about it, and gather participants.

    Bring on the community!

    I'll start:

Anyone interested in doing a Modern Masters draft at Prime? It would most likely be at the Olive 8 TT freeplay area on Friday evening at 9pm. Price would be $30 for three packs, keep what you draft. If I get enough interest I'll take deposits to hold a spot and collect the balance when we draft. Lemme know along with the best way to get in touch with you.

Will those of us without badges still be able to play board games? Last year we were able to join a friend of ours who had a pass up at the Red Lion(?) and play board games with him for a good portion of the evenings despite not having one ourselves.

That only happened because some Enforcers weren't being diligent enough in pass-checking then. You need to valid badge in order to get into any part of PAX.

Is it PAX <insert nearest future PAX here> yet?

This blows my mind hearing this said. In the 5 years I have been attending PAX the TT Library and Freeplay areas have always been available to people without badges. All you need is your Driver's License/ID to check out games. Perhaps that is not how it was supposed to be and by bringing it up we are ruining it, but it has ever been thus.....

  • zerzhulzerzhul Registered User, Moderator mod
Yeah, definitely not supposed to be that way.

In addition to what other people said, this only works because not that many people did it. If word was spread that anyone who wanted to could come into Freeplay, they would. The area would get jammed and either Enforcement would get bumped up or the fire marshall would step in because of overcrowding. And nobody wants that.

  • dapineappledapineapple Registered User regular
Well, don't I feel like the guy who just ruined it for everyone.

  • zerzhulzerzhul Registered User, Moderator mod
If by "ruined for everyone" you mean "brought light to an actual issue that could fuck up PAX" sure. Fire codes are no joke, and if a bunch of people who didn't get badges are crowding the building, that can really fuck it up for people who actually got pax badges and are supposed to be able to attend the event.

Good Point. Sorry but I always forget about fire codes and how serious they are.

Also, where did people ever get the idea that it was okay to use the services of Tabletop without a badge? Certainly not from any official source! Even if an attendee didn't have their badge checked when sitting down to use a PAX Tabletop Freeplay room, surely they knew in the heart of the cards that it was intended for attendees with badges. If people got away with it in the past, then they were knowingly using a service they knew they shouldn't have the right to use.

Yes, especially in the evenings after that day's minis tournament has ended, all taking place in the Olive 8's 3rd floor ballroom. There will be a few tables set up for demos during the day, running concurrently with and next to each day's tournament. But if they're not in use for demos, or the tournaments have ended early, then they will be open for Freeplay. They will be 4'x6' tables, but we can't guarantee that any terrain will be available, so if you need terrain, please be prepared with your own, beyond any armies you bring for your own freeplay games. Freeplay tables are, as always, first come, first serve.

Huh, I could swear the lending library closed at midnight, but the freeplay areas stayed open later to play attendies personal games. I distinctly remember telling my friends "No, don't try to learn and play Arkham horror at 11:00 PM; you'll be here until 2:00am." I could swear they were.

The hours have been reduced this year due to the extra day. Everything closes at 12:00 rather than 2:00.

Thanks for the clarification. Its all good, My room has booze and I'll just have to be sure to bring some boardgames of my own.

Is there a list anywhere of the games expected to be in the library? Trying to do a bit of planning with my group and get people up to speed with rules ahead of time, but don't want to pick a bunch of games we're unlikely to see in the library. A few games we might be looking for:

    Terra Mystica
    Tzolk'in
    Steam

As a matter of fact... THERE IS! Mostly. Sort of:
    http://www.boardgamegeek.com/collection/user/paxtt?own=1&subtype=boardgame&gallery=large&ff=1

At the moment we list 430+ unique titles in the PAX TT permanent library. But please consider this a subset of what you'll find.

Steam is included in the current inventory. Tzolk'in and Terra Mystica at the moment are not, so don't come expecting them to be there. But that may change. Some new titles may be added between now and PAX, and at PAX itself some titles may be loaned to PAX Tabletop HQ for use during the event (list not finalized). So please consider this a subset of what will be available.

After PAX Prime is over, we'll update this inventory again before PAX East with any changes, to continue to make this list available.

Also, please remember that we will again have two library locations: TTHQ on the 2nd floor of the WSCC, and also our satellite library on the 3rd floor of the Hyatt Olive 8 Hotel. If practical, we'll try to have a list of what's in the satellite library sitting in the main TTHQ library room.

Would there be any interest in a p&p Numenera game? I am not sure when I would be available to run one but I was involved in the playtest and I have been running a private game for months now and I would love to see more people playing. The system is super easy to pick up and the focus on storytelling really allows you to have a blast without getting bogged down in micro management.

The system is super easy to pick up. During the playtest I was able to have some friends and family (who only have minimal Pathfinder experience) pick up the system, create characters, and run through a simple adventure all in under 4 hours. This was without cutting any major corners either.

I have three adventures that would work great as a 4 hour game (one from the playtest, one from the kickstarter campaign, and one from the core rulebook). I do not have a 100% firm schedule yet but once I do I can send you both PMs.

Here is a good intro to the game: http://www.montecookgames.com/numenera-primer/

I will take this opportunity to throw this out there again since my last post got subsumed by discussion of badges in the freeplay rooms: I'd like to do a Modern Masters MTG draft in TT freeplay if folks are interested. $30 for 3 packs, keep what you draft. PM me or post here if you're interested. Limited to 8 people :)

I am playing around with the idea of getting a small game of Swords & Wizardry going at PAX.

The past three years that I have attended PAX Prime, I keep saying that I want to run an RPG with random people at the expo. But I never do. One thing or another gets in the way. This year I am hoping that will change.

I am posting this as a way to put out some feelers. Is there any interest in this? Would anyone have suggestions as to were I/we should do this?

My game plan, up to this point, has been to just send out a tweet when my friends and I are ready to play, inviting people to join us. I am just open to hearing anyone's ideas and thoughts. Feel free to respond to the thread or PM me.

For lack of a better place to do a Pre-PAX LFG, I'm going to leave a quick note here. I get into the convention a bit late on Friday due to cursed work, so rather than try and scramble for a tournament, I figure I'll issue an open invitation. I'd like to run an RPG friday night around 6 or 7PM. It would either be from the newly released Deadlands Noir or some nice and simple D&D 4E. If there's sufficient coaxing, I could also throw Paranoia at a willing group of victims players. Characters would of course be provided (Or if you're ambitious, bring your own) Pop me a PM if you're interested!

    Question:
I know last year we (my group of attendees) had some difficulty finding a place to play, as well as we like to game late. Are we allowed to take games back to our hotel room to play overnight (With a PAX badge on the coordinating days)?
