I noticed this is free to play now (though I guess it has been for a while?) What content do you get before you start paying?
The entire class story from 1-50 is free. It's really worth it just to give them $5 to make yourself preferred.
I'd say try and find a retail copy in a bargain bin somewhere for $15 or less. That gets you 1 month of being a subscriber plus preferred status for life.
That's a good idea. I see this all the time in bargain bins now.
How healthy is the game? Is it one of those situations where I'll buy into a game on it slast legs? Because that annoys me a lot.
The game has at least 2 more years in it barring a catastrophic comet strike.
Who do I need to message to join the Imp guild on Shadowlands? Just want the XP bonus mainly :P
Yes, I am currently GM of RC.
I'll be on a bit tonight for my usual PVP before jumping onto an alt (probably sometime between 5 and 7 EST). I need to join the PA Chat since I always forget to, but my empire alts toons are Assuran, Breanna, Flokk, and Flockette. If I'm on my Pub alts, I'm most likely on Celinah as I'm leveling her. There is an outside chance I'll be on Joarclas, Alornaha, or Hjalmar as well, but it's highly unlikely.
As an update, if you haven't logged onto a toon in RC for over 300 days, I've booted them. I'm more than happy to sent another guild invite, but I hate cluttering up guilds with inactive members.
Cool. I'm playing as Thexana - I just sent a friend request to all your alts
Okay, I'll be on at some point tonight. I'd say around somewhere between 7-10 EST. Wish I could give you a better time, but my wife and I are going to our local county fair, so I won't be home until later than normal.
If you don't see me today or tomorrow, I'll be afk until Tuesday of next week, at least due to a trip out of state.

Yeah the population is pretty huge, actually.
Though that also means you'll be treated to a general chat full of armchair politcians, religious whackjobs, holocaust deniers, and pedophilia apologists. Sometimes all at once!
I started playing this a little while ago and am having a lot of fun so far. Do we have an Imperial Guild on Jedi Covenant? If so, I would like to join.

It's like 3-5%.
Nah, at it's lowest it's 6% I think. Top XP is 10%.

Anyone have an opinion on the best story besides Agent? I'm tempted to play a Republic character, even though I won't be able to fund it with my Agent main.

Smuggler or Jedi Knight are the two best Republic stories.
I've heard going Dark Side as Republic makes waaaaay less sense than doing either Dark or Light as Imp. Is that true?
Dark Jedi Knight is pretty eeevil. I found it enjoyable.
Light side Sith Warrior and Dark side Jedi Knight have both been excellent. Going from working to reform/bring down the Sith Empire from within to basically being renegade Shepard with a lightsaber for the Republic. Featuring the occasional mass murder and airlock dump.
Dark side consular seems like it could be pretty cool.
Dark side Trooper and Smuggler just make you seem like a gigantic asshole though.
Fortunately light side smuggler is (almost) all the sass of dark side inquisitor with none of the facial scarring.
a lot of the DS options in the game in general are just being an asshole for no reason, it just only becomes an obvious writing problem for republic characters (because you know, sith.) But yeah, a lot of the jedi DS options are just like, let's do something obviously evil for no reason that makes sense!

Story opinions vary, but mine for the Republic are:
Jedi Knight: Best traditional Star Wars story. I personally love it to death, but then I love Star Wars. Its the only class I've played through twice. The thing is that this also means it plays it safe, so there aren't a lot of huge surprises. I felt it was the best story equal to Imperial Agent, but then as I said, I love traditional Star Wars tales, so if you don't, your opinion is going to be quite a bit different from mine.
Trooper: Very much like a war movie. More serious, lots of by the book. It can be up and down with a lot of the world story missions being kind of dull while the end chapter missions are completely awesome. I would recommend you play it at some point, though.
Smuggler - Great character, pretty good story, but not very epic in scale. I'd have liked it better if I'd gone Gunslinger instead of Scoundrel (I was a Sniper as Imperial Agent and loved it, so I went the opposite way much to my regret).
Consular - Pretty bad. I hate to say it, but it really is. It has its moments, but they are few and far between. I would suggest avoiding this until the next time they do a set of Double XP weekends so you can burn through it fast.

The whole light side dark side thing is one of the major flaws in the setting, and subsequently the game.
The other night in DK general chat a sith warrior chimes in with this weird question: "Do I have to kill this guy at the airport"
A lot of back and forth ensues and it becomes clear that he's in a dialogue with some innocent random guy who is saying "please don't kill me" and the game is giving him LS/DS options of "murder this hapless baggage handler for no reason whatsoever" or "don't do that".
And the player is stuck because "I'm dark side" and yet he clearly did not want to kill this person for no reason.
The game does a rather poor job of explaining to players that "dark side" isn't this all or nothing affair where you must kick every puppy every time. Vader and Palpatine did not constantly murder their subbordinates. It happened a couple of times, so unfortunately this has been transformed into "bad guys in star wars are always in the middle of a kill spree or else they're getting soft".
And the vast majority of players support this, such that the default mentality is "If your sith isn't taking every dark side option you're a fag go roll pubbie loser."
It certainly isn't a strong point of the game as an rpg.

I find some light side/dark side options to be more thoughtful/impactful, especially in class stories, but on the whole I agree with Fong; it's a false illusion of choice and meaning in most cases because it's literally murder and dickishness or not, and there's no sense of thought as to concequences, subtlety or personal gains in the long run, and just more examples of lazy writing.
The absolute worst decision they made was to turn alignment into a statistic that feeds into the gear system (by way of requirements and restrictions).
Yeah it's pretty stupid that Imperials get light side points for something as simple as "Don't murder this random civilian because he made eye contact." On Republic side you're constantly bombarded with these moral dilemmas like "should I break the law to expose this conspiracy of traitorous Senators?" where doing the effective, holy-shit-this-is-a-no-brainer thing gets you DS points. You always seem to be screwing over your objectives by picking LS choices so you can seem all warm and fuzzy. There really ought to be more neutral dialogue options.
First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKERS
The absolute worst decision they made was to turn alignment into a statistic that feeds into the gear system (by way of requirements and restrictions).
To be fair, there's very little of that anymore. As far as I can tell it's just relics during leveling and those become useless at endgame anyway.

There's still plenty of it. I spent the other evening shopping for a new polesaber for my light side sith assassin.
And I learned that as a light side assassin I am limited to polesabers that look like flashlight handles. All of the cool looking not-cartel-shop polesabers are EVIL.
It's stupid. It was stupid with the color crystals and it's stupid with everything else.

This is actually one of the reasons I enjoy playing my imperial characters more than my republic characters. Light side Republic side feels like being a doormat for the galaxy, not a hero.
Whereas lightside decisions imp-side tend to feel like genuinely good actions.
-edit-
There are always exceptions, of course. Like the Czerka employee on Hutta who hunts sentients for sport. For some bizarre reason killing him is a dark side action. Not that that has ever resulted in my not killing him.

Last night on my (second) Smuggler I faced one of those decisions. I save a fleet of ships with the promise that they become my fleet after it's all done. The choice is LS: Let them fight for the republic instead of being your personal smuggler fleet or DS: Let them be your personal smuggler fleet, denying even their current shipment of necessary medicines to the republic. Where is the choice to keep them as my smuggler fleet, under my command, but using them to help the republic? Because I get the choice, the guy even says "We'll do as you order, after we deliver these precious medicines" and if you say "You're my fleet now" the guy says, "But these medicines are necessary to the republic, you monster! Fine, I guess we're not delivering them." But dude, you gave the solution to this delimma before I made a choice - deliver first, then you become my fleet. No where did I tell you not to deliver your cargo. :[
Yeah I made that decision on my smuggler too. I shrugged and chose the LS option. But it's very typical of pubbie side. Light side choices are very door-mat ish and dark side decisions are typically Chaotic-stupid or Greedy-Evil or some blend of the two without any appealing nuance.
Imperial side I find, at least with the class storylines, that the moral decisions are more interesting.
The side quest related moral decisions are typically piss stupid though.
Poison all these people to death quickly = Light side
Poison all these people to death slowly and horribly = Dark side

I generally don't worry too much about LS/DS choices. Early in the game, I came to a decision on my Sith Warrior to kill a defenseless, captured Jedi or let him have some honor. I chose honor, even though I was going for dark side.
That's something that Bioware has never seemed to capture... the idea that the bad guy can still have honor. Which, when you think about it, is really weird for this game in particular because OT Darth Vader pretty much is exactly that: Evil, but still dignified.

Bad guys can have honor, yes. Going LS doesn't make you not a bad guy, it makes you a /nice/ bad guy. At least in the eyes of the other guys. Given that the average sith thinks power comes from being an utter goose to everyone not able to crush you like a bug, it's quite a difference.

I've said it before, but the most annoying LS/DS choice in the game happens in one of the FPs where if you're playing Republic, mercy killing a guy is a DS choice, but letting him live (where he then turns into a zombie and you kill him anyway) is LS. But on the Imperial side, mercy killing is LS, and letting him live is DS. A tiny bit of consistency would be nice.
But Bioware always liked the Imperials more than the Republic, since beta.
