So I'm downloading this for the first time just now, any advice for a new player? Hints, tips, shortcuts, the kind of things you wished you'd known about right from the start.
I'm literally going in with no knowledge of this other than it's not KoTOR3
Also not planning on spending anything if I can manage it.

- For your first character, don't worry about crafting, just get gathering skills and sell what you gather on the GTN. Bioanalysis and Scavenging are best for profits.
- I know you said you aren't planning on spending money, but Preferred is infinitely nicer to deal with that completely FTP, so spending $5 in the cash shop to get that bump is really worth it.
- Imperial Agent is the best story in the game, bar none. If you don't think you're going to spend much time with this game, do that one first so you can experience it.
- Roll your toon on Jedi Covenant server so I can help you out if needed (main toon name: Sofia)

Well I should say that my mains on Jedi Covenant are all republic characters, so if you start on Imperial agent you'll need to send me a message here to have me log on to the imperial side if you need assistance in any way.
If you want to start on the republic side, where all the cool kids are, I recommend Smuggler for best all around pub story, or Jedi Knight if you want to feel like the hero of the galaxy.
Also, you can find unlocks for features unusable to F2P/Preferred players in the GTN (AKA the game's auction house). Make sure to buy ones with [Account] in the name if you do as well avoid any said unlocks if they have a number in the icon.

Other possibly helpful notes regarding classes:
Tank classes are pretty well balanced now so that you can choose any one, Guardian/Juggarnaut, Vanguard/Pyrotech or Shadow/Assassin and get a good tank. My recommendation is Guardian/Juggarnaut for tank, just because it's my favorite.
Of those, the best story would be with Guardian, Juggarnaut, and Assassin. Vanguard/Pyrotech are both kind of mediocre, IMO, and Shadow has the worst story in the game.
Of healers, the best ones are Sage/Sorceror (shines all around, but especially in group heals) or Scoundrel/Operative (best single target healer). Commando/Mercenary is certainly doable, but I find it unenjoyable, and based on experience as a tank with them, it seems to be the most challenging class to heal with. Of those stories, Operative, sorceror and scoundrel have the best story, Commando/Merc is mediocre, and sage is again the worst of the lot.
On DPS, you will find the game likes to punish melee a lot, thus Gunslinger/Sniper is aces, Sage/Sorceror is almost as good, and Commando/Merc is pretty great too, though they have a boring skillset. Sniper, Gunslinger, and Sorc have the best stories of that group, commando/merc again is so-so, and Sage is blah.
If you want to thumb your nose at the game's punishment of melee, you can't do better than Sentinel/Marauder, which is really one of the highest DPS classes of the game, but requires that you put skill into it. It's certainly enjoyable to play, but if you're the type to ignore the effect of your skills on CC, or to jump in before the tank gets there (because you can) you will die frequently and/or piss of a multitude of healers and tanks. It's a "jump first, worry about taking all the aggro and dying instantly later" sort of class. Both Sentinel and Maruder have equally good storylines, IMO, though Sent's is more epic.
Every other class that's left is a melee class - yes this even applies to Vanguard/Pyrotech and Scoundrel/Operative, even though they both carry guns which you'd think would imply range. I frequently switch to DPS on my guardian tank to make daily areas faster (I cart around a second set of gear for this purpose), then switch back to tank for the group finder queue. The downside is that aside from sorc/sage, the classes that can switch between two roles are generally 1) melee dps and 2) less high quality DPS than the DPS-Only classes. But when you're waiting for hours to get in the queue with a gunslinger, you might wish you were dual spec'ing a vanguard or sorceror instead.
For what it's worth jug/Knight dps and scoundrel/Ops dps are both very enjoyable.
Jug/Knights can do an ass load of AoE, scoundrels kick people in the nuts and then shotgun them in the back and operatives get to stab dudes in the chest. It should be noted that when you punch or stab someone your character will giggle.

The giggle is the auditory cue that your proc has gone off. Vanguard has a "Rrrrrr!" for it's proc. I'm not sure if any other classes have a noise for their procs.

Jugg/knights have an assload of AOEs, wut? Knights are enjoyable to play (I've already stated my love of guardian), but aoes is one of the areas that they severely lack. I mean smash is nice, don't get me wrong, but the range of that skill is still melee. It's nothing compared to mortar volley, forcequake, or flyby/orbital strike.
Also knights/sith warriors are the only base class in the game to be given no cleanses of any kind. Which doesn't matter much leveling up, but can really make a difference if you're planning any endgame stuff.

This is all great stuff, thanks everyone. I think I will roll with the Imperial Agent. The promise of a good story and it's also got FemHawke for the female character so that's nice.
I'm only about halfway done with the download (25GB??) so I can only play on the starter planets. Should be enough for me to get a taste of what's to come.

One thing, the Jedi Knight story is the most "Star Wars" like story of the classes, and is the closest to what KotoR3 would have been. I would recommend playing both it and Imperial Agent, as I feel they are the best stories on their respective sides.

That should have been AoE damage, since yeah they basically have 1 AoE and one conal both of which are melee. Not that being melee really matters since almost everything will run up and hit you.
Really though my intention was to address that jugs/Knights can be more than just tanks. Admittedly I was browsing the forums while at work so I kinda skimmed posts and clearly didn't fully type my thoughts out.
Speaking of orbital strike though, how shitty is it since the change? I haven't been playing much and when I do play I play my Knight.

So I've been playing this a little while now, still quite fun. The only annoyance I have so far is enemies respawning on top of me. I kill a small group, go over to loot the bodies and suddenly they're back, and I'm surrounded. Also some enemies continue to shoot me through hard cover like a wall or a huge tree.

Respawn rates are higher in places where the game expects there to be a lot of people - so starting planets and daily areas. I believe once you get off the starting planet, the respawn rates calm down.
Is GSF just not cool already? I was queuing up for the GSF/PVP weeklies, and I did 3 PVP matches with very rapid pops. I then queued only for GSF and sat for 30 minutes with no pop. It was really weird. This was 6pm PST on Bergeron, so not prime prime time, but not desert time, either. Just seemed strange.
Speaking of Bergeron, I'm not super psyched about it so far. I restarted there since it shows as west coast, which is where I am now (I'd always played on Shadowlands/Jedi Cov before). I'm kind of thinking about moving back to one of those two. I can't put my finger on why, but I haven't had much luck with interacting with other human beings there. =P
I haven't been feeling GSF ever since they released bombers. I find the drone carrier a stupidly overpowered addition to the game considering the amount of skill it takes to play (read: Zero). Which means their numbers will only increase as time goes on. I don't enjoy flying any ship besides the Flashfire, which is singularly ineffective at dealing with them, and I can't trust PUG teammates to bring the right tools to counter them. So I don't really fly anymore.

Also turn on "Loot all" if youre hanging around that long, you're not doing the "one click and go" method.
I just re-subbed for a month of SWTOR play pre-ESO. I plan to finish the Jedi Knight story in the next 30 days. I forgot how many different buttons there are to push. So many buttons.......
Had another 2-0 victory on Novare Coast.
I think I may have been partly to blame since I had forgotten some of the mechanics of that WZ.
("I'll just stand here and guard this one objective when we're up ~30 - 6 ... Oh...")
Also need to remember to start capturing PvP games again.

Pub side. Coulda just been a fluke of the timing (plus it was the day after daily reset, so the first wave of rabid weekly completers had probably passed).
About to hit Belsavis and Voss on my sage. It's nice to be coming up to max level, but these 2 planets have felt like a serious grind in the past. I was thinking about spicing it up with some Kuat, but I'd like to finish the story early so I can use the process of unlocking daily areas as additional XP towards 55 (I wasn't super psyched my first time through the Makeb 50-55 chains).
My only real issue with Belsavis is that it feels too long. You reach a point where you think "Okay, only one more area to go" only to find out there are five more areas.
My only real issue with Belsavis is that it feels too long. You reach a point where you think "Okay, only one more area to go" only to find out there are five more areas.
That's it for me, definitely. Same with Voss. I like that the storylines get bigger and more fantastical on those planets, but it just feels like you are there for decades. I think that glowy trial quest on Voss is my least favorite quest in recent mmo memory.
Can't stand Voss. One time through I actually managed to sequence-break the planet quest and got off world without ever facing the Avatar of Sel-makor. Achievement Unlocked: Fuck That Planet.
Cant' stand Corellia either, because it's fucking impossible to get around these massive city blocks with only a tiny tunnel leading to the next area, which is never anywhere near the location of the quest marker so it takes ten times longer to get anywhere.
So I usually squeeze every last drop out of Belsavis and leave there around 46-47. Bang out the class quests only on Voss/Corellia, which puts me at Ilum/Belsavis Bonus/Black Hole at 49, after those and Section X, with HMFPs interspersed I'm usually 53 without ever having to go to Makeb. I usually just run flashpoints and ops to get to 55, since Makeb is also super annoying.
If I didn't like Belsavis I'd probably hate the entire last half of the game.
First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKERS
So I basically dont play any more but maybe being in an active guild will get me to actually finish the Knight story; if I transfer to Jedi Covenant will I keep all of my legacy unlocks, like clothing and crystals and stuff?

Once I get my main legacy to fifty I'll have to transfer (a) character(s), then.
Had a thought the other day. If Tanno Vik and Skadge ever met, within five minutes one of the following would happen.
1) Skadge would grow so annoyed with Vik he'd pull him apart. (I think Tanno's kind of badass, actually, but Skadge is big and strong for a Houk. He would rip Vik a new one in melee, game balancing aside.)
2) Vik would grow so disgusted with Skadge he'd find out what room Skadge was sleeping in and put a bomb under his bed that night.
3) They would immediately become hetero life-mates a la Jay and Silent Bob.
I want to say 2 because I still think Skadge is repulsive, but I'm not sure.

So 2.7 is up on the PTS. Was just about to move a char or two over to it …
. . . then I realized that I'm not putting together a guide. Nor do I feel like I need to take part in building up the hype.
And to be hones, I thing I'd rather be one of those guys who see the Flashpoint for the first time when they join it once it's live. Those guys who don't know exactly what to do as soon as they enter. Those guys that don't spam spacebar.
Because i don't expect them to fix any bugs that the community discovers on the PTS, before 2.7 hits live.
I guess a title would be cool, but I'm not NiM material.
That's how I was with the Rakghoul event. My guild rolled right on in to the raid boss with no foreknowledge, finally able to learn something by wiping instead of reading a guide.
Of course there was no wiping because it was an utter faceroll, but the intent was there!

I haven't found anything solid one way or another, bu apparently, most of the bundles are character only. Which is annoying, because you'd think bundles would be discounted, and Artifact Authorization, account-wide, is already like 3/4 of the standard price of Rising Hero.
...though come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen Rising Hero not "on sale"...

Google has been less than forthcoming with the details of this as well.
If it's account wide, I'd happily throw some money at them. Not going to bother with individual character unlocks.

Having some way for the Republic and Imperial players to compete against each other even on PVE servers (a bit like WOW's Wintergrasp of old) would be great.

. . . then I realized that I'm not putting together a guide.
