would some Aussie forum member care to explain what is up with the bush hat? I get they are probably things that gullible people are told to do to ward off "dropbear" attacks. Clearly those are forks jammed into the top, but what are those things dangling from the brim? At first I thought they were corks on a string, which made no sense, now I'm afraid they are tampons.

Drop bears are a thing, dude! Those dishonourable Australians like to deceive unwitting tourists like G&T into taking ludicrous prophylactic measures against rabid koalas which allegedly drop out of trees to maul folk.
Oh brilliant

They are actually corks on strings. It's an old style hat; the corks are there to keep flies away from your face. You move your head, the corks jiggle around and ward off the flies.
It does actually work, but they're pretty silly looking.
Watching this strip be drawn live was amazing. The whole experience of watching the strip come to life while Mike and Jerry banter with the audience is the Penny Arcade comic on an incredible level.

Note that the comics above are only the early days of the watch saga. It still tends to show up in a lot of the gratutious-Gabe-and-Tycho-violence comics, it's just not usually referred to so directly.

I'm going through now to try and get the complete arch. This could take a while, I'm only up to New Year's 2006.
But I did stumble onto one of my favorite strips that I had completely forgotten about.
Oh no! Someone needs to go through and find Tycho getting the watch back at some point between now and 2011/03/14, otherwise they've broken the continuity. I would, but I just scrolled through 7 years worth of comics and now my eyes hurt.
If we can't find a better one, I'm proposing we place this one in the watch arch (even though there's no watch visible).

Can someone point out the source of the term "Drop Bear"? I know they refer to violent koalas that drop on you from trees but the first I heard of it was on the Jason Ellis show (aussie skateboarder turned SIRIUSXM radio host).
It's one of those "stupid tourist" pranks that's so old it seems to have just always existed, like the wild haggis or wolpertinger variations. There's a theory that it came from aboriginal stories that were possibly based on one of the extinct relatives of koalas (several of which were slightly larger and a bit scary looking), but that's kind of like saying bigfoot might be based on tribal accounts of gigantopithecus - they're things that existed but not in the same place or time as humans.

So glad I stopped by.
Rather telling.
You can't take chances just by dabbing urine back there with a cloth - it needs to be straight from the source.

He says in rural parts of Australia, some people wear corks on their hats to keep the flies away.

however, can someone please explain the hotdog fairy. Slipping my mind and really bugging me
Someone asked them to draw it during a comic panel a few years back. Now it seems to show up in every panel comic (this one was from PAX Aus).
Edit: Ah, you fixed it.

I think we need to raise awareness for this terrible condition.
(did this quickie a few years back, apologies for the shoddy brushwork and going a little OTT on the flare, I was in a funny mood that day)
