Yeah I thought Other M was okay, but I'd never play through it again.
I admit the exploration and shooting is neat, but the upgrading and suit functions are shotty. Why even explore for missles when I have a function that fully regenerates my missle supply in seconds?
It's just not a Metroid game. It doesn't feel or play like one, and the story doesn't even come close. But, the game it does play like (Ninja Gaiden with range weapons) isn't as bad as people make it out to be, it's just not at all what Metroid fans expect. Especially after those awesome E3 demos and trailers.
I can agree with this thinking.
Enough time has passed that I guess I'm willing to go into it not viewing it as a Metroid game, but... just a game, I guess.
"Samus Aran's Hatchling Hijinx" or something.
I played a little of the game at a press event a while back, but this was before I began getting review copies. (Funny enough, I was booted off one station before I even got to "play" because I had to endure the opening cutscene a second time and they needed it for a video media segment.) I enjoyed what I got to play there, the cutscene notwithstanding, and I'd at least like to experience it again and play some more until the point I'm not enjoying it any more.

I think that point is somewhere around the holograph environments. Neat idea, but confusing and not executed very well.

I'm fairly certain if I were to visit the facility where they press Wii game discs and took a diarrhea dump right into the disc pressing machine, Metroid Other M would pop out.
If they do a post Metroid Fusion game, it should be about Samus running around the galaxy looking for the, seemingly endless, Space Pirate and Federation Metroid cloning facilities in a bid to wipe out the Metroids once and for all.
Again.
For the last time.
Early in the game you find a clone of the Hatchling that thinks Samus is it's mother and it retains those memories. It follows Samus around like Navi; only instead of being annoying, it sucks life out of things and gives it to you, thanks to the Metroid DNA you have in your body (from Fusion).

I love that idea. I can't begin to think of a good idea of how to make it work, BUT... I'd just love to be able to unleash my little pet metroid on unsuspecting pirates.
I loved in the Prime games when the metroids would attack pirates.

I think a sequel to Fusion would be Samus on the run from the Federation due to the events in Fusion. She lands and hides on a planet that is a bit out of Federation territory.
Then she discovers evidence of that planet being the origin planet of the Chozo. Eventually the federation sends other bounty hunters after her Empire Strikes Back style and it sets up several boss fights. In the middle of all of that, you discover some super dark secret of theirs.
Also Kraid took over the Space Pirates after Ridley died in Super Metroid.
Samus, stuck between the Space Pirates looking for revenge and the federation, looking for a fugitive, can we say....DREAD?
My idea for a Fusion sequel would be where Samus has been arrested by the GF and thrown into a prison planet, which you have to escape from the center of. I like the idea of a reverse situation where you're working your way out from the depths of a planet instead of starting on the surface and working your way in.

Ooh, I kinda like this idea. It would even give a super simple reason you lose all of your upgrades, because they take them. Then one by one, you get them back as you get closer and closer to the surface. Fantastic idea.

Retrieve them from secret research labs where they experiment on prisoners. Seedy corrupt underbelly of the Galactic Federation. I'm not sure Nintendo would ever have the nuts to go that far, though.
Other M would have worked if it was set before Metroid.
They'd have to take out certain parts of the story, for the better, but then we'd have had rookie Samus Aran actually pulling a dumb rookie move and getting people killed.
The encounter with Ridley would be the first encounter with him and that'd get Adam killed somehow. Yes that would mess up the Metroid comic released in Japan, but it's not the first time they've changed things. (Zero Mission)
Instead of Hardened Bounty Hunter Samus Aran waiting for daddy to tell her to do something.
That Ridley scene really aggravates me because even in Zero Mission, she was straight up angry and ready to kill his ass in the little cut scene when you finally run into him.

So, not joining this merry-go-round again.
How cool was that opening scene of Super Metroid, with all the dead scientists? SO COOL!
That pirate ship was pretty spooky at times, especially with all of the log entries going from "Everything's okay and routine" to "Everything is going to hell in a hand basket."

One thing I love in Metroid Prime is how it takes the convention of "Diary entries about how fucked we all are due to [event]" and modified it to "Diary entries about how fucked we are due to SAMUS ARAN, SHIT SHE'S HERE RIGHT NOW!"
Nothing like inspiring fear in your enemies to make it feel like progress.
I've really liked the Prime series use of logs to let you discover what's going on behind the scenes while never putting you through another cut scene.

I liked the one about how their best encryption wasn't slowing her down.
I was like, encryption? What encryptio- oh, the bit about 'log entry decoded'?
That's right, Samus' suit is so badass, it's hacking the pirates most secure internets without her even noticing.
Also, the one about the Hunter wearing new black armor. Oh wait, no, she just showed up in her orange suit.
There are two of them.
We are doomed.

Sorry, I had to fix that for you, as Nintendo apparently no longer considers her/wants her to be known as a "bounty hunter," as she would never do such dirty work, yes?

Science Team is attempting to reverse-engineer Samus Aran's arsenal, based off data acquired from her assaults on our forces. Progress is slow, but steady. Command would dearly enjoy turning Aran's weapons against her. We believe we can implement Beam weapon prototypes in three cycles. Aran's Power Suit technology remains a mystery, especially the curious Morph Ball function. All attempts at duplicating it have ended in disaster; four test subjects were horribly broken and twisted when they engaged our Morph Ball prototypes. Science Team wisely decided to move on afterward.

I love that one.
This one is fun too.
"Another hunter, wearing the traditional colors of Samus Aran, made planetfall today. Horrific as it may sound, there are two of them now. We are bracing for a new assault. This dire turn of events may bear some good will. One of our scouts in Dark Aether saw a curious encounter. The Dark Hunter attacked the one clad as Samus near a Phazon site. Perhaps they are not allies...but foes. Perhaps we can forge an alliance with the Dark Hunter - an exchange, Phazon for the head of our common enemy."

Which just goes to show that the Space Pirates don't have the stones for proper science.
The Galactic Federation would have kept trying, even if the last attempt killed all the scientists, and threatened to unleash an unstoppable strain of the galaxies deadliest predator.
For Science!
Well, Yeah. Everything they have is stolen. All their tech, most of their science as well. They're basically just screwing around with things not designed for them, and have no knowledge of how to actually work it.

Samus is sometimes paid specifically to commit genocide on indigenous species if they're hostile on an inter-planetary scale
But not as cool as the opening of Metroid Prime, with all the dead pirates.
Especially when the wounded ones tried to shoot you.
Well, consider their perspective. They are already in dying pain and suddenly out of the haze comes the monstruous creature that every Space Pirate fears to the bone. It's like you already being wounded and then seeing, I don't know, the fucking T-3000 coming at you with an helicopter minigun in each hand. You either piss yourself or yell in panic and shoot like crazy.
Big question is, who's the better bounty hunter? Samus Aran or Boba Fett?
Samus by a mile. Fett isn't really all that. Seriously, in the movies he did very little and then got punked - he just got considered badass because he had a cool helmet, and then years later writers who grew up with a nebulous idea from their child days that Boba Fett was badass got to write for the expanded universe and wanked him to hell. And even WITH the wank he ain't even that good.
Compare to Samus whose first game in the NES days even before any theorethical power creep might have set on has her murdering her way through a maze planet and killing all manner of bosses.
You know, I posted this as a joke, but the more I think about it the more I think this would be sweet as hell. Just an endless collection of technology, genetic enhancements, and behavioral conditioning modifiers, and you apply them successively and in various combinations to Pirate test subjects until they can reach objectives like "defend territory", "subdue metroid", or "mine phazon", and ultimately "defeat the Hunter".

I remember back in the days when Nintendo had their own official forums that I would hang around quite often. This was back in middle school so I was about 12-13, right around the time I had started playing Metroid games.
There were so, so many people who were adamant / disillusioned into thinking that Dark Samus was not in anyway spawned from Metroid Prime (should I spoiler that?) Like, there were countless threads of people dissecting concept art from both Metroid Prime 1 and 2 looking for the tiniest evidence that would support this theory, and it was just baffling. Of course, I got sucked right into it because I was naive and thought you could convince people to see your way on the internet back then.
The other horrible, drawn-out, clusterfuck of a debate I got sucked into was somebody positing the theory that Metroid Zero Mission wasn't a retcon/remake of Metroid 1 at all, but rather a supplementary story that took place after. Nevermind that all evidence to the contrary was plain as day; this guy refused to see it as anything other than a separate tale. Like the previous argument, this turned into a pissing match of dissecting maps from a fucking twenty-year-old game comparing them to the new, updated, modern maps of Zero Mission, all to find differences that would support this theory.
