I remember back in the days when Nintendo had their own official forums that I would hang around quite often. This was back in middle school so I was about 12-13, right around the time I had started playing Metroid games.

There were so, so many people who were adamant / disillusioned into thinking that Dark Samus was not in anyway spawned from Metroid Prime (should I spoiler that?) Like, there were countless threads of people dissecting concept art from both Metroid Prime 1 and 2 looking for the tiniest evidence that would support this theory, and it was just baffling. Of course, I got sucked right into it because I was naive and thought you could convince people to see your way on the internet back then.

The other horrible, drawn-out, clusterfuck of a debate I got sucked into was somebody positing the theory that Metroid Zero Mission wasn't a retcon/remake of Metroid 1 at all, but rather a supplementary story that took place after. Nevermind that all evidence to the contrary was plain as day; this guy refused to see it as anything other than a separate tale. Like the previous argument, this turned into a pissing match of dissecting maps from a fucking twenty-year-old game comparing them to the new, updated, modern maps of Zero Mission, all to find differences that would support this theory.

    It was mind-numbing.

Nah, I think at one point he was using 8-bit Samus as an avatar. I wish I remembered the name but this was ten years ago at least. The forums aren't even around anymore to look.

edit: One thing I remember he harped on a LOT was how both games' instruction manuals had slightly different phrasing describing Samus' mission.

You know, I posted this as a joke, but the more I think about it the more I think this would be sweet as hell. Just an endless collection of technology, genetic enhancements, and behavioral conditioning modifiers, and you apply them successively and in various combinations to Pirate test subjects until they can reach objectives like "defend territory", "subdue metroid", or "mine phazon", and ultimately "defeat the Hunter".

Intentionally make it impossible to kill her, just so it's all the more awesome when someone taking a break from colonizing the circus tent in Dwarf Fortress does it.

    Whaaaaaat?!

Just so we're clear, this is the official Nintendo forums that were part of/related to Nintendo Power, that had dedicated message boards to each of their key franchises, right?

That'd be insane if it was the same dude.

I never went to the forums you're talking about, but that guy went to both, I am pretty sure. Very few people argue the same thing that he argued, and that's all the same tlaking points that he used to use.

That and dissecting every single press release about the game to prove that Nintendo never called it a remake.

I also seem to remember scrutinizing Tourian in both games and claiming that the different layouts of Mother Brain's lair suggested, again, that they were different.

Sorry, I had to fix that for you, as Nintendo apparently no longer considers her/wants her to be known as a "bounty hunter," as she would never do such dirty work, yes?

Samus is sometimes paid specifically to commit genocide on indigenous species if they're hostile on an inter-planetary scale

She's pretty much the ultimate bounty hunter

Apparently, she wouldn't take money to do it. I believe Retro joked she's more of a "pro-bono hunter."

Well, given her vendetta against Space Pirates I would definitely believe she'd be willing to do any mission involving the systematic extermination of Space Pirates for peanuts.

I can see the bids already.

Prime 2's biggest sin was the patchwork level flow (due to the alternate dimension mechanic) which often required you to frequently hop into and out-of portals to traverse long areas.. forcing an unskippable cutscene EVERY. DAMN. TIME.

Total blind luck. I went in to trade a bunch of old stuff in and they were having a one day only 20% off sale. I was gonna just take it all as cash but then I saw a copy of MPT behind the glass. Snapped it right up. The place is Savepoint Games in Charlotte- I highly recommend it to anyone in the area. Got everything from NES on up and some playable arcade cabinets too.

But it's not gonna be pleasant! I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I'll find him for three, but I'll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you've gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don't want no volunteers, I don't want no mates, there's too many captains on this island. Oh, this thread isn't far back at all.

I've been replaying Fusion now that it's on the Wii U virtual console. It's really fun! I can't remember the last time I played it, but it was definitely close to ten years at least. I think I got on board with the "It's too linear!" bandwagon in later years but playing it again, it's not that bad. You can still explore a bit here and there when you're completing each objective, and the gameplay is so tight that I don't really mind it pushing you along.

did anyone notice that Trinen's elaborate dream on the Tomodachi Life Nintendo Direct focused on Samus? She got more screen time than Peach and Zelda (not to mention they referred to her as Samus Aran, whereas the others were Princess P and Z respectively, but that might have been due to space contraints. Although they could have just said Peach and Zelda).
