The Wonderful 101 is an action-adventure game created by Platinum Games (Bayonetta, Metal Gear: Revengeance, Mad World) and is exclusive to the Nintendo Wii U. The game is directed by Hideki Kamiya, who also worked on Viewtiful Joe.

So why should we care about this game? Well, I'll let this Nintendo Direct do the talking (seriously, watch the whole thing):

I went from "This looks interesting" to "I think I might get this" to "I should cancel my Rayman preorder and just get this!"

Of course I won't cancel Rayman, but this is a must buy now. I was always interested in the DMC and Bayonetta games, but really didn't like the themes. Now there's a super hero game that keeps some of that style of gameplay and I can't wait for it.

Downloading the demo when I get home.

Ok I played the three player co-op with my kids (ages 4 and 5). There was a lot of chaos, but I really like it!

It takes a while to be able to read the enemies on the screen amoungst the chaos. The kids had the GamePad, but I didn't have too much trouble making swords and guns on the gamepad. Circles to make the hand and recruit others might take more practice.

It's a lot like DMC or GoW in the sense you switch between power attacks, crowd control, picking up items andkeep combos going. The twist is keeping your number of heroes high to do the unite skills.

There are 15 plays on the demo. I susepct I'll use them all.

Personally I'm not $60 interested in just about any games these days. I wait on all the big name stuff for a Steam sale. I will probably get, like, mainline Mario and Zelda games at full price.

Sent the kids off to play elsewhere and played the Story and Mission parts through by myself.

Great game! I particularly loved the section in Mission with the laser/cannon hybrids firing whilst more robots dropped in.

Attack, dodge, blue light means A, red light means ZL, dodge, dodge, combo, combo, COMBO!

I peaked through the start menu. There's item mixing ala Bayonetta, equip-able slots, unlockables. Holy crap this game is gonna blow my mind when I get the full deal.

Get the demo. The game's controls take some getting used to (like how slow morphs make you move, so you need to be able ot duck and weave pretty good) and it will be worth the practice.

THe demo is fantastic, but I'm very bad at it and require more practice.

By the way, guys: this game's theme song is amazing.

Has anyone loaded the Wonderful 101 theme to Youtube yet? I need it. I need it.

    Guys!

    GUYS.

You can change which hero leads the Unite Morph form!

I had Wonder Painter on Sword duty and Wonder Kungfu on Hand duty at the end of my demo.

Wonder Kungfu yells like a monkey, it's glorious.

This game is crazy. I found a secret mission in story mode. Looking at the tally of medals at the end I expect there's another. The hang-glider morph is in the demo (triangle) but I can't find anywhere to use it properly.

I'm getting the hang of the Unite Multi Morphs. Slashing away with the sword while transforming the non sword guys into a 360 gun attack.

The other trick was holding down the unite attack button beefs that form to the maximum size. I love upgrading the gun into a bazooka then letting loose on those shielded cannon tanks.

I had read a report (from Keza at IGN) that later morphs were hard to pull off. I hope not, or at least I hope they can be learnt with practise.

I think the trickiest-looking one is Unite Claw.

I believe that the "hold attack to beef form" is a specialization you do with a badge, which you can set in the pause screen. You have three specializations available.

How do you make a 360 attack gun? I managed to make a super scope that basically nuked whatever it was fired at, but have not seen anything beside the pistol and that. Does the ratio of vertical line to horizontal line determine the gun's shape? Hrrrm

Re the badge specialisation: Ahhh yes, that makes sense. I originally picked the 'Dodge Mine' badge and it was dropping mines whenever I dodged. I picked the first badge ('Unite Charge' or something) to test it out, but it was probably the

Re the 360 gun. I was referring to the Multi Unite Morph attack for the pistol. It seems to fire several shots simultaneously in multiple directions. So to do it:
    - have Sword or Hand active
    - draw a Gun
    - press X (Team attack)

You'll keep attacking with your Sword or Hand, and the rest of your team does a one-off, multi-directional gun attack.

I don't think the ratio matters, simply the quantity of heroes committed to the morph form.

So is the Super Scope the largest form? I bet it ain't. I bet there is larger, probably a straight-up bazooka or summat.

Trying to draw different unite charges in the midst of a combo is pretty tricky I gotta say

You definitely have to play twice for it to really click what's happening. There's so much chaos it seems ridiculous while you're also trying to get a handle on the gameplay. A second go-round was much easier to deal with and I blazed through.

I noticed a few things: Using the pad to draw is in many ways superior if only for the fact that you can pause in the middle of drawing and time stays slowed. If you were drawing with the right stick you are committed to whatever you were planning on doing in the first place. Drawing by hand gives you that extra thinking time.

You can stop and move in the middle of drawing. It's not committed until you press A. This means you can draw a wonder-line and then walk it around to pick people up. You do not have to redraw.

Anyway, still trying to get the hang of things like dodge mechanics. Not really sure about combos either. Also need to figure out the best places to use Wonder Green still. Thinking back, most of the playthroughs with experienced people posted on various websites moved a lot more slowly and deliberately than I did when I first started. It's really a thinking person's action game, not as frantic as it appears to be.

Edit: So, the climbing attack seems way less effective at slowing down enemies than it seems like it should. Am I missing something?

You don't need o be in Hand or Sword to do the Gun Team attack. I think you can do a team attack with any morph, so long as you have heroes who can use it. I recall throwing out multiple Sword team attacks while using the sword myself.

Oh, and here's something fun. When a Dough-Goo or Chew Dough-Goo is about to die (glowing blue and almost about to explode), surround them with a Wonder Circle. They will be recruited as temporary heroes!

Reminds me of doing Floral Finishers in Okami for Demon Fangs.

Might need some help clearing up some things with my limited time with the demo.

How do I activate the touch-screen for drawing instead of the Right Analog stick? Also, how do I remove that tiny overlay in the lower right corner?

    Thanks!

BTW, I have a feeling this thread is gonna explode on September 15th.

In story mode, the touch screen should be active as soon as you start. In mission mode, I'm not sure. The touch screen didn't work for some reason. Maybe I missed something.

Works for me always as long as you are on the Input screen. I wish you could turn off that overlay on it however and that the view didn't jump around. But I've mostly learned to ignore it.

    Cross posting:
    It might be

At this point you could tell me it's a Japanese dating sim and I'd believe you

That very well could be happening in the colorful clusterfuck onscreen at any given time

The game is much less chaotic than it seems @Unbreakable. The chaos is just colorful noise. You can actually slow way down and think about what's going on. The game gives you plenty of breathing room and it looks like most if not all enemies have tells. It helps if you press L and zoom out on the action.
