someone I beat last night ranted about how I was nothing and he was so much better as the game ended, then decided to msg me after laughing at my sub 100 APM. felt awesome.
seeing the 2011 games makes me realise how bad everyone was back then
It's funny how everybody keeps getting better at this game, but it's relatively hard to notice until you see a drastic difference. I feel like I've gotten better at this game, but since everyone else has too, it hasn't made much of a difference to my rank. However, as soon as I load up a game from a year ago and watch it, that definitely makes me feel better. I've even still got some bronze league games from when I first started (though I have no idea if they still work).

Oh man I know this feeling. Back in 2011 I was awful at the game, never went towards any build orders or anything. I was gold then too. Now that I've learned to play properly it seems more people have as well and the overall skill across the board has risen.
I was always told, still am told, that by making workers, spending my money, and avoiding supply blocks will get you to diamond. But I've played lights out against platinum players and still fall a bit short via scouting or bad control, I.e. Non-basic macro stuff. I will agree consistently having good macro will get me promoted, but that specific point is often neglected, as well as a proper explanation as to what "good macro" truly means because imo its more than just probes and pylons, even if they're the most important

but thats how maps were back then. You had your natural, then your third was the risky and vulnerable expansion. Maps these days your third timing is pretty key, and you want the tech to defend it when back then you wanted to attack more to defend thirds. Neo Planet S is rather large compared to the old maps, and it has an easier to defend third
Oh, the Korea guy claimed my graphics card would be 500 dollars to replace. I brought it up on Amazon, lo and behold, it went down another hundered bucks since I bought it. He said he would get it and price-match.

So today I learned that if I see a protoss fast expanding in PvP, going straight to void rays, and I 3-gate stalker pressure as a response, thats all-in and i for sure planned it at the beginning.

I even asked him why he FE'd, he said "Why not?"
Cause u ded dood
I've always hated it when greedy players lose to aggression and assume it's some sort of cheese.
It's like, no, you went for 3cc first, I killed you with roaches because, well, you had nothing to stop them.

No, you see, you should have let him get away with 3cc 2 ebay on like 4 marines and 6 hellions. Macro wins are what counts. (Unless it's 2rax, then it's a solid pressure build).
I find it frustrating to play against people who do dumb builds that are easily countered, then turn around and play a guy who does the earliest fucking DTs possible or someone that does a refined 1 rax into widow mines that I'm unprepared for.
The range of skill I seem to be facing on ladder seems pretty big. I'll play a guy that was diamond last season, and turn around and play some dude that nexus firsts in PvP.
I know that because i play sporadically, I get weird matchups. I'll lose for a while, then start winning again when I face easier opponents and get back into the swing of things. At that point, I end up playing a wide variety of opponents, just because the matchmaker doesn't know what to do. So maybe you're improving enough that you're going to see a pretty big variance...or you're playing the people that play irregularly.
It might be that, and it might be that I play people that just exploit the holes in my games. In PvT the only things I seem to lose to are drops. Hell the last game I lost I spotted the double medivac drop, was in good position and still lost a ton of probes.
I just need to stay focused knowing that these "holes" are fixable and I'm not playing bad, just need to fix a few things. I actually wish I was playing more PvZ, I've played like maybe 3 PvZs in the last 20 games and I have a feeling if I fix my PvT issues, my PvZ stuff is gonna bite me

I don't know how much of that is indicative of improved skill levels or changes in maps and units.

Yeah, the main reason zerg went from awful to OP in WoL was that maps became bigger.
Used to be that taking any kind of fast third simply got you killed by low-commitment pressure.

So all I have to do to not get mad at ladder is to listen to non-stop disney soundtracks. It is actually impossible to be annoyed.

Until "It's a small world" comes into rotation and you end up murdering your neighbor.
At least you're doing so with a smile.
That said, I don't think that song was ever on one of their sound tracks. Could be wrong though.
I just searched for "disney" on spotify to start with and had it on shuffle. Then I started building a custom playlist after I hit too many I didn't like. I think some of the best songs are from the most recent films. Pre-1960 disney just doesn't really do much for me.

xelnaga caverns is hilarious. and it was the 'macro map'
you wonder why MC was the protoss savior for doing 6 gates and such... holding that nat is a ludicrous proposition for a toss. I wish we still had that map :P
