Speaking of worthless components... CASE. What a waste. They need to make it act like CASE 2 where internals just take a couple points of damage when ammo gets hit. Then it would be worth while to take on the rare occasions ammo isnt packed in the legs.

Yeah, the space requirements for ammo make CASE thoroughly, thoughly useless at the moment. 4 tons of ammo covers pretty heavy use of most weapons, and it's not hard to safely place another couple of tons of ammo when the extra is needed.
Though to be honest, about the only way to make CASE useful would be to force ammo storage to be in torso sections.
Why the hell is the average response to contact....Immediately back up to as far as possible!!!!!!!
Too many encounters where people move forward and nobody backs them up, so they get shredded in seconds instead of breaking the enemy line.
EDIT: Speaking of why that sort of stupid thing happens, had a match tonight where a Highlander with one ERPPC and one AC20 ignored a crippled Atlas with a single PPC left on the same side as his crippled torso... in order to try and hit a Jenner. Which he didn't hit a single time. While he watched the Atlas back out past 90m and it cored him.
See, those are the folks people get behind them, so instead of pushing, they fall back. Personally, I do it all the time, because I'd rather let the idiots who don't know any better soak up fire while standing around then bear the brunt of enemy fire. At least if they're doing something as meatshields, they're doing something instead of being annoyingly horrible in really heavy mechs.
EDIT EDIT: And I've been seeing a lot of people trying to sport things like 2xPPC/2xERPPC + 2xAC5 combos in the last few days to try and recreate the glory days of pinpoint alphas. They're alright builds, but too bad the folks using them never really bothered to learn much about playing in a not-gimped way and tend to get butchered because of the XL engines they have to take. Karma is fun.
People run XL in damn near everything at this point. Going for side torsos is my default tactic unless they've already taken a lot of damage elsewhere.
Gotta imagine the absolute marathon distance between cap points on the newer maps has people thinking "gotta go fast" these days.
speed is too much of an advantage to give up on anything that isn't an assault, realistically. Better to move at a reasonable speed and have some firepower than be a bit more survivable and only be able to do one of those

Eh, I can't help but think a lot of the reason the time-to-kill these days is shorter is because people are trying way too hard to front-load their arsenal and throw away durability to get there. If you have two of the same variant and one takes an XL to overload on weaponry and the other takes a standard for extra durability, then (depending on the mech) a decent pilot with a standard engine can come out ahead of the XL guy plenty of times, simply because it's a lot easier to blow the side torso on most mechs than to core them.
I mean, when the game is packed with Jagers and Phracts spamming UAC5s and taking XL engines to do it, of course TTK is going to seem short; those mechs fall over in a stiff breeze as long as you don't try to stare them down. There are plenty of ways to kit out mediums and heavies with standard engines that make for solid builds that can take loads of XL builds down, if they play smart.
honestly I get just as frustrated with people who insist on running up my mech's ass. Sometimes the best move is to back around the corner... but wait! There's some dragon or something humping your leg

Can't agree with this hard enough. When I pick a spot to peek out and look around, I wish I could smack people in the handle with a ruler when they decide to come up RIGHT BEHIND ME and just stand there, causing my clear path of retreat to become "stand there and take a shitload of fire while I try to figure out why the hell I'm not backing up". And it's their fault, because people should not be standing directly behind friendlies without moving, ever. I'll stand right behind folks, but I pay special attention to make sure they aren't backing up and then get out of the way immediately when they do.
Ugh. Ugh, 4 man group. Exit the tunnel on Frozen City. Atlas waiting for us. I lay into him. 2xUAC/5s, 2xAC2s, the DPS is there.
Pounding him, getting hit. Pondering why. Turns out, all 3 of my teammates have exited stage-left, and run away. So when I see a single Atlas, killable, they see an insurmountable obstacle. I get annoyed. Annoyed enough that I might have explained to them that they ought not to reproduce. That, in fact, they ought to seppu-ku themselves. That they might not be any better than the worse puggies I've dropped with.
Turns out, that this is, in fact the case. Oh well.
I'm getting a handle on this highlander, but I can't help but feel like I'd enjoy it more if I just put a very similar loadout on an orion instead, or even on a CTF-2X or something

Lol! Even though it was a veritable pub-stomp, making a tri-UAC5 Ilya rage at me because I cored him with my dual-AC10 Firebrand (with the quad-(m)laser as backup) made it all worthwhile.
...still, it was your stereotypical pubbie match (complete with a full lance fighting in 3PV) of conquest where I was the only mech that was going for objectives (while waddling along at 60kph).

732 is the staple of the 2 PPC Gauss build. Good heat efficiency, good alpha and long range damage, weak brawling even more so with the nerf to PPC's less then 90 M, but allows for great sniping. Destroys those Ultra builds in 3 Alphas or less. Would not advise to take into pubbing, cooperating lancemates is almost required.
The 733P is the choice of plasma loving snipers, packing 2 PPC's and a ER PPC with enough close range damage to say fuck off to lights and meds in the form of 3 SRM4's. Heat efficiency is poor but proper discipline will take you a long way to hitting 1200 + damage in this build. Good pub and lance build.
Finally the 733C is the brawler of the HGN's, packing a powerful 2XUltra combo, 2MLAS and another 3 SRM4's for maximum alpha. Note the build carries a STD 270 instead of the default STD 300 due to the steep requirements of mounting and arming 2 Ultras. Don't be in the front line unless needed, support AS7's and STK's, this is a hard hitting support with the capability to be an off-tank. You will lose your Ultra arm quickly though if you stick in the fray for to long. Good lance build not so much pubs.
Also viable on the 733C is the more widely accepted 2 LLAS, Gauss, 3 SRM4 loadout. This is a medium to limited high (>1000) range build, with the ability to tackle Heavies and Meds, you can take on Assaults but it's best to take them from range. Anything fast will give you a problem if they get to close because your turning is poor and SRM's/Gauss can be difficult to land against fast targets. Good lance and pub build, can't go wrong with this one.
Use to own a 733 but any build I could do on that I was able to do on the C, P and 732. Not worth IMO.

Generally, if I get that bug, I can alt-tab out, set the resolution of my monitor to something other than the native resolution, set it back, then rejoin that game and it'll be gone.
I had the game freeze on me several times yesterday which usually requires me to shut it down from task manager. Once though, slamming my hands on the keyboard did the trick and I got to watch my Orion get asploded.

I would hate Terra Therma less if I wasn't focused on mastering out a skirmishing Laser Boat (the BJ-1X), which is pretty shit on that map when run solo.

Talking about pubbies? I can actually sympathize with them. If you're playing by yourself, I can understand a reluctance to engage first when it's highly likely that the people around you will abandon you to die. I remember when I first bought a shiny new Atlas, and thought to myself "alright, time to spearhead a charge!" Nine times out of ten what would happen is that I would get absolutely wrecked because the seven other guys on my team turned around and ran away. So I don't even get mad about that anymore, especially considering how many people around here (including me) spout the mantra "let the pubbies go first." The massed charge is very nice and usually successful when you pull it off, though it's hard to start it outside of voice-comms.

The chat box one Toasticus got was a serious classic I haven't seen in months. The best were the no-hud bugs, where you'd try to follow someone around and shoot what they shot at.
I had a pretty great match blinded on Caustic like that, just following an Oosik to lay down support fire. I hit consistently, even blew off a few arms, and was feeling pretty pleased...until I looked at the scoreboard and saw I did ~70 damage because I mauled friendlies the whole time.

I just fear that if people are allowed to choose what mech they want when they see Alpine Peaks then my game is will crash from having to deal with 1000 LRMs being in the air all at once. Similarly other maps will be min maxed upon, to the detriment of general fun.
