The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
It's kind of sad that out of all the news reports that I've seen about Manning today, only two have actually gendered her right. And one of those is the Daily Mail.
The BBC World story I heard on my lunchbreak began the story saying, "Bradley Manning says he is now a woman," and then seamlessly transitioned into using "she/her" and referring to her as Chelsea.
from olden times gender roles were pretty well defined in Norway
and manliness - by which I don't really mean machismo and bravado but doing the things that a man should and not doing that what a man shouldn't - was very important to the old norse
deadliest of insults were all questioning a man's honor and manliness
deadliest in the literal sense since the result was either combat, or the insult being true, and a man's honor and manliness, his status as a proper man, taken away
combined with that there's also that women held a stronger position than a lot of other societies in europe
they could inherit, and the lady held the keys to the farm and was undoubtedly the one who ran shit at home
that juxtaposition kinda reminds me a little of how it's now
we have a society with equal rights - not just nominally, we do. Equal pay for equal work has been a thing for ages - yet also a very traditional gender divide in professions.

I just did a quick news search to see
this abc story is like, "The statement asked people to use the feminine pronoun when referring to Manning. It was signed Chelsea E. Manning."

It is kind of funny seeing all these things about what's going on now when the trans thing is really not new, just not widely talked about.
Information is a funny thing.

WHAT IS GOING ON
did they scare quote the pronouns
that is what they used to do in any article involving gender identity
I have no idea if insurance companies largely cover treatments for those ICD codes.
It wouldn't surprise me if they usually don't.
fuck insurance!
it is my new mantra
lots of insurance also starts going "hey, those amphetamines are expensive..."
fuck insurance!
I really want to jump on the "Fuck insurance!" bandwagon but I just recently got prior auth for a drug that a month worth runs like 50% of my total premiums for a year. I feel obligated to say "Sometimes they don't fuck you.*"

If that preference is not expressed, use the pronoun consistent with the way the individuals live publicly.

It could've been worse and besides we just can't do it differently, you know. Later it'll be better this is just a rough patch of us covering nothing.

NYTimes ran the same way. Must have been an editorial decision not to switch genders mid-story.
They might be following the historical model for talking about a transgendered person from before the transition. Are all the instances if "he" in past tense sentences? Like:
"Bradley Manning leaked documents when he was a soldier. She now faces up to 35 years in jail."

It's funny because that's a plausible reaction from Obama.

you may or may not have noticed we're in a military alliance and generally tend to bomb the same stuff
and 2011 ap style says
"Transgender: Use the pronoun preferred by the individuals who have acquired the physical characteristics of the opposite sex or present themselves in a way that does not correspond with their sex at birth. If that preference is not expressed, use the pronoun consistent with the way the individuals live publicly.

so they fucked up
That just seems excessive.
I say everyone bomb different things to avoid wasting bombs.
Nope, just used she throughout the entire article.
It was weird.
Or they're just being inconsiderate silly geese.
the only acceptable level of force is overwhelming; there is no overkill, there is only "open fire" and "I need to reload"
Mass bombings take an absurd number of bombs to be successful. So you kinda need to bomb the same stuff.
but he mows his lawn 3 times a week. for hours at a time. it is his hobby.
and the other house beside us was foreclosed so it's like
well okay their lawn is REALLY nice. . that one is REALLY bad. . .oh the one in the middle well okay i guess they could be worse.

Yeah it was just a silly joke assuming precision strikes on the same exact location many times.
Like even the BBC misgendered her.
All piv sex and boobies and ruggedly handsome men and buxom ladies.
The worst hobby.
I'm failing.

well, kinda, but like
my reaction was like
"uh, okay?
that came kinda out of left field and I can't think of any way to link that to the reason she's in the news"

Dunno man, they're pretty badass. And she has the cred of being an acclaimed director of successful sci-fi films to back it up.
