Taking a look at the weapon files it seems like the grenade launchers have "Specialization_None" rather than "Specialization_RC_Shotgun" or "Specialization_CC_Unarmed" so it probably isn't effected by any skills.
So, does investing points into Cyberware for extra essence let your mage character keep their full spell slots and cast times while still getting cyberware enhancements, or is it just for equipping extra 'ware?

1 extra essence is relatively cheap and allows you to get some decent cyberware like a +6% hit chance eye or something
I found her mission easier on my melee cybered up street sam than my mage. My mage needed someone to frontline for them and you don't that without Gaichu, Ratcher or Duncan in the party.

As a melee runner, those rats were doing like 1 damage per hit by the time I did it, so it was pretty easy

There are enough dragon lines that a mage can make multiple rats explode each turn from bouncing flamethrowers. Nothing got close to melee range in that fight outside of the boss. The biggest issue was not accidentally blowing up the party with spell bounces.
Spider-Drone, Spider-Drone,
Does whatever a Spider-Drone does.
Can he swing from a web?
No, he can't, for now he's a drone,
Look out, he is a Spider-Drone!

so, i've started a troll phys ad in dragonfall. i'm loving smashing dudes up with my katana as they cower behind boxes with their teeny pistols. also i bear a passing resemblance to hellboy now i have an overcoat which is always good.
what are peoples thoughs on cyberware? most of it seems good tbh (dermal plating, bionic arms and legs, wired reflexes), but is there stuff i should hold out for and how much essence loss is too much?

I'm pretty sure, in Dragonfall (Director's Cut, anyway), once you've gone on the Doctor's sidequest to the lab, the full range of cyber- and bioware will be available. Save your money until then.

I just wrapped up a full-cyber troll game... tons of fun. Due to the cyberware affinity tree I don't think my essence went below 4, and my dude was as tricked out as I could afford. Can't remember exactly what I had. Essence wasn't the bottleneck, money was. But then my guy wasn't doing anything magical at all.

If you're just looking for stat upgrades (and you have the director's cut) you may want to hold out for Dr. Ezkibel's optional mission, which unlocks a bunch of low-essence bioware. I forget if adept spells are bothered by essence loss, but I kept my dwarf adept at 4 just in case. Otherwise, dermal plating's worth it for any melee character, and cybereyes are good investments for most builds.
Wired reflexes are handy if you can afford it, but it may put a crimp in your budget elsewhere. The Schockwellenreiters give you access to a similar alternative for free with no essence cost, but without the auto-dodge and taking 2 extra damage per attack for the +1 AP. Hydraulic jack's also useful for quickly closing the distance.
Sorry, Fixer is not a Johnson. But it could be a new mode if they meet the stretch goal.
Just one thought, this game really need some cutscenes. Those descriptions do not manage to convey the gnawing feeling of empoverishment that permeates the setting.
You could say they are lacking some teeth. :P

thanks guys! don't need much beyond my trusty shank, so the rest of the cash can go on sweet cyborg bits. is it worth buying loan guns for your core crew or do you just leave them with the defaults?
i seem to be taking blitz on runs instead of eiger. am i doing it wrong? between myself and glory dps seems to be shored up nicely...

Just leave them with their default shit
And I'd take Eiger instead of Glory, if you're handling melee
Guns do a ton more damage, melee's primary role is to pop them up out of cover so that your gunner can ventilate their skull

Loaned weapons can come in handy, but if you're thorough in searching you'll wind up with enough surplus guns to do this for free. What you might want to do is buy a program or two for Blitz, which you can loan to him when he jacks in; Sniffer for an accuracy buff and possibly an additional ESP, depending on how much money you can spare.
As for Eiger, she and Glory are definitely the team's heavy hitters, and most of the time one or the other is fine. It's more a question of which abilities you think you'll need: Eiger's great for sniping and putting grenades/buckshot into groups, while Glory can pin down stronger individual enemies up close. Position accordingly and pretty much any team combo can do well.

Any more than that would probably be a waste

I didn't have much trouble, except having to down a few more medkits since my healer wasn't around. What kind of build you run with?
Why I fear the ocean.
Also gave medkits to the ork lady.

See, I was running around as a full melee adept. Their counter move is pretty great against the rats.

I would play the fuck out of this game.

By endgame, my melee adept was pretty much a murder machine.
