I prefer to mix it up and do a little of everything.

Mixing it up is generally my preference as well. I don't level nearly as fast as if I just grind Legendary Quests and whatever the weekend special has to be, but I also don't get burned out.

The holo-sim in particular burns me out because there is nothing to it other than surviving waves... no change of scenery, nothing. At least with Midtown Patrol there is some amount of... immersion I guess is the closest word I can find. Much less loot though, obviously. I think terminals would be a little better if there were more scenarios other than the ones already covered by story mode, but they generally do provide me with a suitable distraction.

  • vegeta_666vegeta_666 CanadaRegistered User regular
Maybe they should add a Random Terminal? It wouldn't be good for hunting after certain bosses, but it could just randomize the level/enemies/boss and (maybe) give a slightly better drop rate for the randomness. It would help mix things up.

It's just a shame because I thought the story stuff was well done and would like to see more of it. Tough to argue with the price though...

There is a new "Chaos" terminal coming that is randomized bosses and mobs. Also, there is a new chapter coming, Bronx Zoo, which will be the new chapter 2. An additional unannounced chapter (rumored to be cosmic related) possibly by end of year. Devs said this last week they are looking to build a new MM-style map, plus there is going to be competitive PvE map(s), new modes for PvP, and the first raid. Details on most of that and more should be revealed at end of April when devs do a panel at Chicago comic con.

    Quick notes on Team-Up Heroes:

All Team-Up Hero options are available in all game modes. I saw a few posts that didn't understand that, I don't think Ryolnir was clear about the in the stream. You can absolutely personalize them and use the long/short/passive versions in whatever content you wish, including all terminals, X-Defense, midtown, story, PVP, raids and future new modes. I think Ryolnir was more alluding to what you might prefer based on certain encounters. For example: Certain raid fights might have windows of opportunity where a mob gets weaker, so you may want to summon your Team-Up during the weak part.

For team up testing in test center, you probably won't test long enough to find top-quality gear for the team-ups, meaning they will die much quicker than normal (and also do MUCH less damage). Keep that in mind in feedback and such. Balancing will actually be quite easy (Psilocke is running number), so focus on testing usability, comprehension of tooltips, bugs, UI functionality, etc.

The team-up inventory functions are fairly new, so deciding how various types of clicking and stacking interact with team-ups will need iteration (even after launch, most likely).

We have not yet received final approval on Falcon and Firestar visuals yet, but we're hoping early next week.

There is no way that Team-Up AI can reasonably be made to avoid AOE - there are simply too many types of AOEs and having them move out of them could lead to even worse behavior (such as never attacking). So, to have the best of both worlds (continue to attack, but not instantly die), all team-ups have a tuning variable to take less damage from AOE attacks. Currently that is set to 50% damage reduction (on top of whatever gear you assign them), but that could change during final tuning.

    Keep on truckin'.

my only question about Team-ups is, is their gear locked to the hero they are teamed up with or is it account wide?

I know any hero can use any owned team-up no matter how many other heroes that team-up is assigned to.

but does each of your heroes have an instanced version of the teamup (like how Diablo 3 handles the companions) meaning my Cyclops version of Falcon has different gear to my Deadpool Falcon?
or is it essentially a mini-hero you gear up and all your heroes get access to that specific Team-up wearing a universal set of gear?

Is Team-Up gear for specific heroes?

Team-Up gear can be used by any Team-Up Hero and are not for specific heroes. (At least not yet).

My issue with the story mode is that it's so easy to outlevel the content, but some parts of it has to be done in order to get power points, and even if you just do those quests, you have to get to them, and the waypoints re-lock when you re-start in each mode. Now that I have 2 60's, I started Iron Man at 1 and was level 17 before even getting to chapter 3, which I think is about 8 levels too high for the content.

At least they are going to ditch the having to re-run story mode to get the bonus stats.

EDIT: Also, you can disable synergy XP bonus in gameplay options if you want to somewhat keep pace with story content.

Currently I don't really play. I just don't think the itemization is really any better. So any time investment feels like a waste.

On the other hand the developers are really into it and their enthusiasm is contagious so I still give them money.

    Hmm.

I tried Team Ups on test as well. They're essentially a pure upgrade no matter how you cut it, so kind of bothered by them taking a ton of ES or a minor amount of Gs. Wish they had a simple low cost (200 ES) team up out of the gate so people could grab one cheaply without having to invest too much. Or toss in one with minimal to no voicing for free, or something. As it is, they're either going to trivialize content or they will have to design content around them, either way being kind of silly.

Mechanically they're not particularly interesting. Basically mildly customizable combat pets, and the pet AI in this game is pretty awful and the controls non-existent. Spider-man is probably the better pet from what I've seen, though Magik is flashier and can summon more pets which is amusing. Their overall effectiveness is hard to gauge since no one on test really has equipment for them, but playing on a low level character they trivialize the low level content even further.

Now I will say that they have a lot of unique voice work (with Spider-man being done by Christopher Daniel Barnes) and are actually quite chatty which is nice. They comment on random heroes, and apparently will also comment on some characters when they're called in though I have not heard this myself.

Probably going to ignore them myself for the moment. Maybe grab one during a sale or when they release some more down the road.

I've not seen anything about what they're going to do with the roll out of these. Your point about balancing really leans towards everybody having to have at least one. With them delaying them all because two are late I wouldn't be shocked to find out they plan on comping people a single one of them. At a random guess I'd say they're the new "You beat the story!" reward since so many of the starters no longer get ES for that.

That would push the complexity down the road a little bit and keep at least the normal run of the story at "Really Easy" instead of "Laughably Easy" for first time players. When you're rerunning the story with XP boosts I don't think they have much option to make that not silly. I do wish they just shared out waypoints, at least the ones that you're of a level with.

On a second character, the only troublesome waypoint for permanent bonuses is Mandarian, because it's instanced without a quick access to a normal zone.

Unless they've kept a fifth team-up under wraps (which is entirely possible) I doubt they're going to give one away. Otherwise people who bought the team-up pack would probably be a bit on the sore side when they found out they spent that money on three characters instead of four.

I do hope they do have one for everyone, as otherwise balancing is going to get fairly messy moving forward.

I'm also in the camp of not caring about team-ups, however small that camp may be. There are already combat pets in the game, so these just seem to be needlessly complex ways to introduce new things to purchase. Yeah some of the benefits (especially the extra inventory) are nice, but there's just going to be such additional complication (read: balance issues) caused by team-ups that I think it may just end up a mess.

In hindsight, I feel SUPER DUMB for buying the advanced pack

Considering I have so goddamn many splinters I could have just bought them all that way

Oh well, I'll know better when "wave 2" of team-ups rolls around or whatever

I mean, I really hope I'm wrong and this isn't an issue. But from what I've seen on test, Team-Ups offer a not insubstantial boost to combat capabilities. They apparently don't survive well on Cosmic at the moment, but gear is basically not available so I imagine that will change (and if not, the devs will tweak them, as I doubt they want people pissed their expensive pet implodes on anything difficult). So whenever raids roll around, assuming they're as tight and focused as the devs say they are, I imagine a group with team-ups is gonna have an easier time than one without.

I hope we get a free or at least extremely low cost (and effective) team-up right off, or at least really quickly, but currently it looks like Spider-man and Magik will be mid-cost, and I'm assuming Falcon and Firestar will be high-cost since they're entirely new assets. And right now for what they are team-ups are pretty overpriced to begin with too. For glorified combat pets that re-use a lot of existing animations, Magik and Spider-man are more expensive than the low-cost heroes. Twice as many splinters or 100G more.

So it's very hard for me to be optimistic about this. But I suppose for the moment the content can be done fairly well without Team-ups, so I'll primarily ignore them.

Devs said they are working on it a couple times recently in response to people complaining about having to re-run story modes. May end up being tied to achievement system that is in the works.

Doomsaw on 3/19 in a thread about it: "Yep, we are going to do this in some easy manner."

Well once one character opens up all the way points though all the difficulty modes you can just use them to get your other characters the extras without having to do any of the story. Most of all the way points you can switch characters at right outside of them for every extra skill point and health bonus.

Yea. It was nice when they did rotating boss buffs that you could get a group for Loki, which helps a great deal.

Though I still remember the guys I joined who had apparently been at it awhile. Seems they didn't get the whole "Kill the fucking Illusions" bit. I suppose if you don't have damage numbers on it could be hard to tell.

Costumes have an extremely rare chance to drop in game, otherwise you need to spend real money on them. Some special costumes can be found on Fortune Cards. Mark 1 cards can drop in game or be bought with Cube Shards (earned from beating terminal instance bosses daily), or bought with money. Mark 2 through 5 cards can currently only be bought with real money.

There's been several costume sales since launch, and they have in game sales events every weekend now, so I would just recommend to wait for one to pick up one or more you want. There's also a crafting recipe that you can put in three unwanted costumes and craft a random new one (costs 200k credits to use).

Every other crafting option he offers still works fine. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

    Dev talking about Midtown:
Midtown did originally have multiple layouts, but the performance hit on the game attained unacceptable levels of badness.

We are looking at both general tech performance improvements - though this will take a while - and also the possibility of additional Midtown-like modes.

What about a take on the Wolverine story arc "Enemy of the State", where a bunch of super villains and brainwashed super heroes would invade the helicarrier among waves of Hydra/AIM mobs?
We've actually looked at the helicarrier for this kind of purpose. As it is, it turns out it wouldn't be a quick conversion as the area was built as a static set piece rather than being tiled in a way we could reconstruct more easily.

Which doesn't mean we won't take advantage of the environment, just that doing so isn't as flexible or cheap as we'd like.
We are working on story content in the form of story one-off's (think, original terminals). In addition, a new Midtown-style patrol mode is being worked on in tandem with some tech that we hope may fundamentally improve performance in these kinds of zones - this last is a bit experimental, though, so we're not ready to make public ETAs at this point.

Have you increased the max players in a MM instance? If so, please lower them again.
No, we haven't raised the max players, though players can (as always) port to their team mates which can sometimes cause the soft cap to be exceeded.

We actually have a change in the pipeline edging it down a bit as it is; there are tech improvements in the long-term pipeline that may allow us to reverse this, but we'll see how well those pan out before committing to anything.
The soft cap is being changed - at least temporarily - from 10 to 9.

This is independent of several other performance initiatives being undertaken by the engineering department, I should note.
