I was hoping I'd be able to play after I get off work, but I'm not sure that's going to happen. Maybe waiting until 11 or midnight CST to let Europeans log out and go to sleep might help things.
They really need to implement an idle time out.
Yeah I'm finding more and more of this sort of thing as I play, stuff that I would have thought was basic MMO stuff but was somehow left out
I currently hate having to dismount when talking to an NPC more than anything else, after that is not automatically being dismounted when I ride up to a crafting node and right click it
I was working from home this morning and was able to get in at 8:30am, but not without hitting a queue.

I met Minfilia, and she explained them, but I can't figure out where I actually go to hire them? All the info I've found is either out of date 1.0 stuff or discussions that don't answer the question on other forums.
You can hire one at one of the main city's market.
The person to set it all up is usually between the two market sections.
Go to the market section of whichever city you want (the part with the market board and all the vendor NPCs). Somewhere in there is a NPC that you talk to to hire retainers. There should be a retainer summoning bell right by the NPC.
Now I can't get back in. I should've just stayed at work.

You get a free month with the game, so you won't have to worry about it until then, but the same place you put your game code in: the mog station. http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/ Hover over Help and Support button, click Mog Station. On the account services page, in the service account status box, it shows how much time you have and clicking the Automatic Renewal link lets you put in your billing information.
