The GV City of Heroes/Villains thread
Garlic Breadi'm a bitch i'm a bitch i'm a bitch i'm aRegistered User, Disagreeableregular
since I don't know the people in the MMO forum (or maybe I do, I didn't bother looking), this'll be a City of x thread for GV people
I'm going to sign up as soon as I finish installing it. I have a level 13 blaster already but fuck, I don't like him so I'm making a whole new account because I got new copies of Heroes and Villains for free
what are your guys's usernames on there
also, if you want to try CoH, I've got 14-day trial codes available. Plenty of them, so just post or PM me.
also also, two lucky people can have City of Villains codes. That's a full month free.
It's more fun with friends around. Bitching about terrible superheroes or villains that pass by, or horrifying each other with our own terrible costume choices.
If anyone's got any trial codes that I could use, I'd be up for it. I played a bit, but I had a crappy video card to it ran like shit, I gots a new one so I want to see if the gameplay will be any better due to alot less lag.

Same here.
Question-I want to be a Magic-Using superhero who uses his magic in combat to fly, and use swords.
Can the game simulate that?

I can't play this game on my laptop, but I wouldn't mind seeing pictures of your guys' heroes because I'm a little bit curious about what you'd all go with.

There's two sword-using hero sets, Katana and Broadsword scrappers. Anyone can fly (with hover or a temp power jetpack at level 6, and the main fly power at 14). As for magic-using, there's 5 origins: Natural, Science, Tech, Magic, and Mutant, but they have basically no impact on gameplay, only on what enhancements you use and what starting power that you'll never use after 10 you'll get. Anything can be played off as magic, for ex I've got a radiation defender, but she's a ghost, ergo Magic origin (that green stuff is ectoplasm, ya dig).
As for the auctionhouse stuff, that's the focus of Issue 9 which should be hitting open testing in a week or so. There's a ton of new enhancement and salvage type going in, which are pretty obviously geared towards attracting the loot-obsessed hordes of WoW and such, but given that that crowd's already passed it up and playing without any of it will be as viable as ever, I doubt we'll really see that much of an economy take off.
My characters: note that for the most part these are the same costumes they've had since level one. Wings and trenchcoats are vet rewards, capes open at 20 and auras (glowy bits, other than powers & buffs) at 30. Hot-Wired's using a temp power jetpack.
Apologies if your modems can't handle creative genius.
Heroes:
Scooter: Force Field/Energy Blast Defender (mutant speedster/Green Lantern-sort)
Aegis Phantom: Illusion/Force Field Controller (Magical summoner of light elementals)
Shining Spirit, Martial Arts/Regen Scrapper (Martial artist with magical artifacts)
Sable Spirit, Warshade (Epic Archetype) (psychic mutant merged with alien)
Join the Penny Arcade channel, to talk in it edit your chat tab so that PA is the default channel, and then the lil 'A' will be assigned to that. Anyone online should be able to give you a supergroup invite.
When you get to level 5, do Newspaper/Police Band missions til you can do a Mayhem/Safeguard, beating that will give you a jetpack.
1)Existing players can send out 10 day trial codes, to a max of four at one time. Which is nice, since it means we don't have to wait for a random promotion for people to get free trials. Dudes can just post asking for one, and someone can hook them up.
2)If the person on the trial subscribes for a month, the person who referred them gets a free month of play.
For the most part I figured that'd be the case...but eh...wishful thinking. I'll probably drop some money on this because I've really enjoyed it from what I've experienced after the last few days. It's like a goddamn Marvel Team-Up game.
I quit CoH a few years back out of frustration with the nerfs. This was waaaay pre-CoV. They hadn't even implemented PvP yet when I quit, although it was in testing. Kheldians had just come out, and they were a little underwhelming.
Anybody care to give me a brief rundown on the highpoints of what I might expect, should I reactivate my account? I'm assuming characters aren't deleted. What about respecs/veteran's rewards/etc?
I quit because of very heavy-handed nerfing... has the design mentality changed at all?
The last nerfing was Enhancement Diversification with CoV - having more than 3 SOs of a kind in a power gives little if any benefit. It was pretty major, but it did actually apparently give them the balance they were looking for, and let them do the special invention enhs I9 (it sounds like you quit after I3) is all about.
Characters aren't deleted, however it's possible your character names might have been taken. You only earn vet rewards for months you played.
I'd recommend upgrading with CoV rather than just reactivating, it's only $5 more and gives you, well, all of CoV, plus access to the bases.
The nerfs made the game soooo much better, but I don't want to get into the argument yet again about that.
Leveling is much faster now than in the past (unless you were a fire tanker exploiting Burn and Swarms), missions feel more varied, many more tilesets (Still too many warehouses, though)...man...did you leave before AT specific inherents? Most of them are awesome, Tankers is a bit bland and I give the Defender inherent a bunch of crap because it doesn't make much sense but in reality it has made it so I don't need stamina on my Defenders.
Considering how long it has been since you last played there are so many good things to look forward to and if you haven't touched CoV you should really pick up a copy of that. I've heard Target has them on clearance right now.
Posts
toss me those things and i won't lock your pathetic thread, mortal
i've had a bucket of 20 of them for like 2 years
edit: oh there's 14-day trial codes in the CoV boxes
hold on I'll PM you
i have some heroes that i play with 14 day trial codes occasionally, and i want to see if they're still ok
edit- i had a villain too, and his design was totally badass, if i can toot my own horn toot toot
I guess I can hang once more with Scooter and the gang.
i just make guys that I think are cool and then i play them for a little bit until i make guys i think are cooler
Theres a big FAQ about all things CoH on the first page of the CoH Chat thread in the MMO forum. Its probably worth reading for new players.
I've got a couple of trial codes sitting around, maybe I'll use those so I don't have to reactivate my account
I've heard this from about all of my friends, the only reason I haven't bought it yet.

Remember to join the Penny Arcade global channel, whatever server you play on, that server being Virtue (also Victory for our Wed/Sat Team Nights).
Also, recommendation for any MMO trial, download it and update it before you start the timer on your account.
People seem to be able to run it via Bootcamp, but thats not a Mac version.
Same here.

My favorite character was a rad/rad defender named "Particle-Man".
I don't remember his powers, though

Basically, there are two important points.
1)Existing players can send out 10 day trial codes, to a max of four at one time. Which is nice, since it means we don't have to wait for a random promotion for people to get free trials. Dudes can just post asking for one, and someone can hook them up.
