Hey, here's a question I've wondered about for people who transition (or at least legally get thier names change) How do you settle on a new name? I know if I was going to pick a name for my new gender, I would go for the nearest equivilant (Ie. my name is Jeremy, so I'd probably go for Janine or something similar.) So I find it interesting to see people who pick an entirely unrelated name.

for some people, getting far away from that original name/identity is entirely the point.
also, some easily feminized names are low hanging fruit for bullies and can gain a negative association.

A lot of us spend a lot of time dreaming about being the gender we want, what our name would be, what we would look like, etc. chances are good that some of us have been thinking of a new name for years.

Meant to hit Quote instead of Agree for this post. Not that there's anything wrong with agreeing with it, but it's strange to agree to a question post?
Anyway, while I'm not planning to go through that process, I do frequently present opposite online (in games and such). I've played many female characters in many games over the years, and one name I use a lot is a reasonably common real name, so I'd probably go with it. I like it. I'd even use it as a forum name except I'd prefer it be a little more... incognito?

My birth name was Jefferson. Kinda hard to feminize, and I didn't want to go that route anyway. I had a list of names that I thought were pretty. Megan, Melissa, Rachel, Sarah, Ophelia, Claire, and Nicole. Most of those names were taken by friends or relatives, and then I thought of Heather. And I loved it. It seemed really feminine and dignified. But also really soft and lovely. After that I was calling myself Heather Gardner for a while. But I just chose Gardner as a space filler, and I hadn't really thought about what I wanted. A bunch of people from the SE minecraft server (Twixxo, Mayabird, Laika, Nukagrenade, and others) helped me think of my name as it is now. I thought of things I really loved and for some reason winter came to mind. And it was then that I decided to just feminize my current middle name and settle on my new one.

heather gardner sounds pretty badass, gonna be honest
unrelated: my Baldur's gate character is going to be dualclassing as a Thief (Shadowdancer)/Ranger (Archer)
gonna be blasting fools with a crossbow
pretty sure dualclassed characters can only take a kit on their first class, unless they changed that restriction in the Enhanced Edition, which it looks like they didn't
I kept saying different names to myself over and over whenever I was driving around during the day. I went with Sophia for a while until it dawned on me that I loved the name that I've chosen.
I remember talking with someone about what names I would like for kids one day. I didn't care about boy names at all, but I loved the name I ended up choosing for myself for a girl. Probably not having kids anyways, so the name is mine now. It has some ties to a core interest of mine and is short like my old name.
I actually used the name of my first WoW character as my new last name. I wasn't sure on whether or not I wanted to change my last name. My family was super crappy to me when I came out, but I had resolved not to change my name out of spite... I, uh... only partially chose to change my name out of spite. It sounds nice with my first name and fits me well
My middle name was a bit of a struggle. I resorted to name lists and finally found something that fit well with my first.
In the end, my names are made up of bits and pieces of my interests and my life. They're the names I chose for myself, which means a lot to me. Using completely different names has helped immensely with separating myself from my old self-image of being a guy. Seeing my old last name still causes a twinge of pain. While I'm settling into my new identity, I do feel like I'm leaving behind my life before, which is really bittersweet. Maybe I can at least salvage some distant relationships down the road to reconnect with my youth, but I'm much happier being the new me at least.

My name has a masculine version that i fucking loathe except for when one person said it as a genuine term of endearment (though i should note that you could call me anything in a polish accent and id still like it)
I dont know though
I still like my name
Its too bad most names are inherently gendered and you can make assumptions based on them and theyre not all just genderless
Look im just saying i want to name any child i have after really intense animals regardless of gender is that so wrOng
Even if i ever changed my name id keep my middle name
Itd be fucking fantastic
And totally hilarious and bizarre and fairly fruity
My middle name is super fucking awesome. But it is weird so when I was filing paperwork at the courthouse the clerk was like "you can get rid of that while you're here."
A lady I used to work with had the last name Zirngible and she thought it was so awesome she kept it after getting married. I thought it was awesome because it reminded me of dirigible and that's a rad word.

my mom was going to call me Dustin or Justin if i wasn't a girl
I don't know how the hell she got from my name to Justin/Dustin.
i have no idea what she would've named me
I was tossing around Jesse when asked about any alternatives, but I won't lie I get a kick being called Julie/Julia whenever I feel in a femme mood.

Maybe Seth. I love that name. Or masculinise (is that a word?) my current middle name into Lewis.
I think I put roughly fifty times more thought into my cats name than mine
You adopted a middle name?
It better have been Danger or you're doing it wrong
