Picked up Super Mario Galaxy 2 this weekend due to news about Nintendo dropping it and other games to $30 (and hoping I would run into W101 copies out in the wild before street date). I thought it would be a reprint with new packaging art like the $20 Nintendo Selects games, but it had normal packaging.
I really should have picked this game up sooner, very nice. Also, I haven't noticed it before but I gotta turn down my volume on the TV whenever I play in Wii mode. The sound is really loud when you boot into Wii mode.
Oh man, you are in for a treat with SMG2. Definitely one of those games that I wish I could wipe my brain of memories of just so I could experience it all fresh again.
I still maintain that combined (or hell, individually) SMG and SMG2 are the best games of the last decade; from pure 100% fun. It's not like they are going to have deep moving stories or anything, but if you don't sit there with a grin glued to your face the whole time, I don't want to know you.
Except some of them purple stars. But even then, when it'd get frustrating, it wasn't so much so that you wanted to quit, you wanted to keep going.
Proving the whole "they don't all need to utilize the gamepad well" argument, my two favorite games for my Wii U currently are:
1. Splinter Cell Blacklist, which is a great stealth game btw. It approaches Deux Ex levels of variation in how you can approach any given mission. Batman could even learn a thing or two from the jazz that Sam's developers are laying down. It doesn't use the gamepad in any particuarly innovative ways other than having access to gadets on the fly from the touch screen. I usually play it with my pro controller, which is STILL a better experience than playing my PS3 or 360 because I love the Pro Controller so, so much.
2. The Wonderful 101 which literally uses every single feature the Wii U has short of the camera and microphone. It's actually too bad the microphone couldn't be utilized. Can you imagine if you could shout out your Unite Morphs like Wonder Red does in game? That was be so sweet if they could get that to work. Maybe if some gaming miracle occurs and we get a sequel.
Which, on another front reminds me. I read a brief article on IGN (I know, I know...) where they referenced an article on Kotaku I think? (Yeah, even worse...) where there was an interview with Hideki Kamiya where he talked about a desire to do a W101 sequel if the support was there to do one, porting Bayonetta 1 to Wii U and that he would not mind at all if Platinum became a second party Nintendo developer. Now, the odds of any of that actually coming to pass are probably pretty slim, but if some hail mary pass in the gaming heavens occurs and any/all of that stuff does come to pass, I think a great deal of us are going to be pretty happy campers.

You've played ZombiU right? Easily the best excuse for the Gamepad's existence I've played.
Oh, yeah I own and love that game. It just got nudged out by W101 because...because it is just fantastic in every way. And Spliter Cell nudged it down to 3rd place only because I'm a stealth game junkie and it's been getting harder and harder to get my fix lately.

Except I've never played a game with good voice recognition.
The only time I've shouted at a game and was satisfied at the results was with Phoenix Wright and that's only because there was only ever one option for it to respond to at a time.

And I've yelled at a lot of games.
Don't ruin my dream
It would've been feasible at least for the "QTE" sequences were you've got 10 seconds or so to draw the shape. It probably would've gotten annoying in regular gameplay after a while, but during those sequences, about 2-3 times per mission? Damn amazing.
Yeah, I wouldn't want to get rid of the traditional way of doing it. And yes, I've never seen voice recognition work in a game either. That's why I added the caveat "If they can get it to work." Because IF that can be done, it would be amazing especially for that game.

After finishing W101 I wouldn't say the gamepad stuff is essential though, I think the only really inventive use of it is the going inside stuff and watching the outside too.
The drawing stuff is really too slow to use on anything above easy.

I thought the game froze the second you started drawing?
It slows down time but doesn't freeze.
Drawing on the gamepad is fine for QTEs & for first learning the game, but if you want to do fancy combos, you need to rely on the right stick; the gamepad is just too slow.

Well, the game doesn't freeze completely, although it slows down a lot (on Normal and lower difficulties). But you do have to grab the stylus, look at the gamepad's screen and draw the shape - which works just fine and you can play through the game without a problem that way, but using the right analogue stick is just faster.

I just use my index finger and I don't have to look at the pad most of the time anymore, but I still use the stick for harder shapes in combat, like Wonder Black's unite morph or Wonder Yellow's.

Yeah, it's just easier to flick your finger than stop and grab the stylus. The shapes are pretty forgiving, so you're able to have a lot of wiggle room for "drawing" with the right stick.
Eventually, if the player reaches day 365, Professor Oak appears and says that Pikachu has to be released, as it is a wild Pokémon. The player has to go to the woods where Pikachu was found and say "goodbye" several times, upon which Pikachu realizes he can't live with the player anymore, and, sadly, leaves.
I remember seeing a demo unit of Hey You Pikachu at a Blockbuster Video. Yelled all sorts of things into the microphone but Pikachu just stared blankly at me. Of course the unit may have been loose/broken because the controller and microphone looked filthy, as is the case with display units.
I mean, having a Ganondorf statue is kind of spoilerly for Wind Waker. And what's up with it being in a clear dome like some snow globe?
A cooler thing would have been Link riding the King of Red Lions, in a model ship in a bottle motif. Or maybe Link and Tetra and her pirate crew on a ship in a bottle.

Gannon NOT being in a Zelda game would be a spoiler.
Doesn't matter how much time passes, that freakin' thing never stops being completely horrifying. Pretty incredible that they so simply created an emblem of inescapable dread. Most horror games never even accomplish something like that.

You learn about Ganondorf being the current villain later. Until the Forsaken Fortress, you could be forgiven for thinking that maybe he was buried with everything else.
When I first played Wind Waker I legitimately thought the story just involved rescuing Link's sister and would not involve Ganon or the Triforce at all. Fully expected the storyline to be a spin-off nature like Majora's Mask, not a mainline Triforce mythos story deal.
Of course I got all giddy when I first heard little Lttp Triforce tune during Zelda's reveal when the pieces of Tetra's Triforce of Wisdom combined.
Goddamn I forgot that story intro, I must be dense about the Triforce not playing any role.
