In addition to this, you have a new red sail that allows you to travel the sea at double speed, and whichever direction you are heading counts as being "with the wind," i.e., no more changing the wind direction constantly.

And with that, I decide to buy a Wii U.

At the risk of dredging up a topic that's already been covered, what do I need to get a portable HDD working with the console? I just don't have any power sockets to spare for a separate power supply.

Nobody remembers the singer. The song remains.

About the large amount of rupees needed to translate the charts, apparently some players skipped visiting Tingle Island early in the game, which was needed to start the chain of events to upgrading your wallet I think? I read somewhere that the HD version will now sort of force you to visit Tingle Island for some reason, and I thought that had to to with wallet upgrades. I cannot remember exactly how you upgrade your wallets, but Tingle did have something to do with them, and I'd imagine if you ignored doing that then you were basically throwing money away with you maxed out small wallet, making the Triforce hunt in the late game extra annoying due to the lack of funds.

Tingle gave you a chart showing which islands had wallet upgrades on them, but it wasn't required. You could just go straight to them.

Nintendo officially recommends an external HDD with its own power source.

Here are the relevant questions from their FAQ on the matter.

How can I add to my storage space?

If you wish to download more content we recommend an external USB storage device with a dedicated power source so that you can expand your storage capabilities for Wii U software.

How large should an external USB storage device be?

This will depend on how much you plan to download from the Nintendo eShop and the size of the games downloaded. Games sold in the Nintendo eShop can range from requiring rather small amounts of storage space to large titles requiring over 10 GB.

What external USB storage devices can be used with Wii U?

What external USB storage devices can be used with Wii U? To ensure maximum performance between your Wii U and an external storage device, we recommend using a hard-disc drive (HDD) with a dedicated power source (i.e., using an A/C adapter). Due to the wide range of external hard drives, usability and performance will vary. For more information on external USB storage devices that can be used with Wii U, click here.

Is there a maximum size for external storage devices used with Wii U?

If the Wii U has the most recent system update installed, it will be able to recognize a storage device of any size, but 2TB will be the maximum amount of storage capacity that can be used. Any extra capacity in the storage device beyond the 2TB will not be accessible via the Wii U.

Can I use a Flash/Thumb drive as an external storage device?

Because these devices have a limited number of rewrites and are not suited to long-term storage of important game data, we do not recommend the use of Flash/thumb drives as an external storage device solution. For best results, we recommend using a hard drive with its own power supply that connects to the Wii U via the USB port on the console.

Commercial Flash memory has a limit on the number of times you can write over it and we don't recommend flash memory devices for long-term storage of important save data.

Is the Wii U compatible with Solid State Drives?

To ensure maximum performance between your Wii U and an external storage device, we recommend using a hard-disc drive (HDD) with a dedicated power source (i.e., using an A/C adapter).

Can bus-powered hard disc drives be used with Wii U?

Some bus-powered hard disc drives draw more current than the USB 2.0 specification and might not run stably, so we cannot guarantee that such devices will run properly on Wii U without the use of a supplemental power cable called a y-cable that draws power from two USB ports. For best results, we recommend using a hard drive with its own power supply that connects to the Wii U system via the USB port on the console.

Can I use an SD Card to save game data on the Wii U system?

For Wii U, SD Cards can be used for saving a picture of your Mii and QR Code patterns for your Mii, but not as an external storage device for Wii U software. SD Cards can, however, be used in Wii mode to save data for Wii games. This data is managed through the Data Management feature in Wii mode. SD cards are also used to transfer data from Wii to Wii U.

What data can be stored on a USB storage device?

Once a USB storage device has been exclusively configured for use with a Wii U console, it can be used to store games, applications, new downloadable content, application updates and save data. Once a device has been configured for use with a Wii U console, it cannot be used with another Wii U console, PC, etc., unless it is reformatted.

Why do I have to format my USB storage device?

To optimize performance and ensure a consistent experience, all USB storage devices must be formatted and configured on the Wii U console for exclusive use with the console. Once a device has been configured for use with a Wii U console, it cannot be used with another Wii U console, PC, etc., unless it is reformatted.

How many USB storage devices can I use with a single Wii U?

When downloading software or playing a game saved to an external storage device, you can only use one USB storage device with the Wii U console at a time. Multiple USB storage devices can be used one at a time to store your downloadable Wii U content, but the Wii U needs to be turned off to reconnect a USB storage device. "Hot Swapping" is not supported at this time.

In the future, we plan to add a function that will make it possible to connect multiple storage media to move or copy content.

Can I use a USB storage device formatted for Wii U to store any other content?

No. External USB storage devices exclusively formatted for Wii U cannot be used to store any other content.

Can a USB storage device formatted for Wii U be reformatted for any other devices, like a PC?

Yes, a USB storage device that has been formatted for Wii U can be reformatted for other devices. Reformatting the device will erase all of its data, which cannot be recovered afterwards. For instructions on reformatting your device using a PC or other device, please contact the device manufacturer.

Can I use a USB storage device formatted for a Wii U with another person's Wii U system?

No. External USB storage devices that are exclusively formatted for Wii U can only be used with the one system for which it is formatted. The only way to use your USB storage device on another Wii U is to reformat it.

Reformatting the device will erase all of its data and this data cannot be recovered.

Can I transfer my saved games from one USB drive to another?

This is possible if the game is transferred first from the USB drive to the Wii U itself, provided that the Wii U system has space to hold the game in question. Then the game is transferred from the Wii U system to the other USB drive.

Also, at the time of the Wii U launch, only one USB storage media can be connected to the Wii U system at a time. However, with a future update, we plan to add a function that will make it possible to connect multiple storage media to move or copy content to from one to another.

If I delete a game to make more room will I be able to download it again if I want to?

On the system where you made the initial purchase, you can re-download a deleted game at any time by going to your Profile in the Nintendo eShop Menu and selecting My Downloads.

I've wondered if some third party accessory maker could make a repeater or some sort of signal enhancer, the reports of the range on the WiiU GamePad range from "my neighbors house" to "I have to sit 4 inches from my TV"

I'm wondering if I can look into it. There are programs that let you view the wireless signals around you so I'm wondering if I could find out what type of signal it is and then find a way to get that to broadcast.

Hmmm. I might have to get it then once I pick up a WiiU next year for Bayonetta 2 then. I wonder what they changed.

Do you want to know what was changed? Spoilers:
In the original game you had to use hints you picked up throughout the game to learn where the 8 triforce sea charts were at...generally from the fishmen in each square who talked about the "golden triumph forks." By the time you had to find them, most people generally had a few of them already, for example, one was just sitting in the middle of the islet of steel. In general though, if you weren't using a guide, this part of the game basically meant visiting all of the islands and solving whatever puzzles were located there in the hopes of nabbing a chart. Then you had to take the charts to Tingle to decipher them for 398 rupees per chart, a total of 3184 rupees for deciphering them all. (This is actually not too extreme an amount of rupees for this point in the game, since during the search you are likely to come across a lot of rupees anyway.) Then you followed the charts to specific locations at 8 different islands at night, to see a shining beacon coming out of the water, which was where you'd salvage a chest from the sea floor and get one of the 8 pieces of the triforce.

In this HD version, 5 of the triforce pieces are instead found immediately where you would've just found sea charts before. 3 of them still require finding charts, getting them deciphered, and sailing to dredge them up. In addition to this, you have a new red sail that allows you to travel the sea at double speed, and whichever direction you are heading counts as being "with the wind," i.e., no more changing the wind direction constantly.

These are very very very good changes.

And yeah, I never played the game with a guide so I missed many wallet upgrades making that a huge pain in the ass. This was also when I had really shitty Internet so I couldn't just go fuck this, where is the answer on gamefaqs. If I got stuck in a game or lost, that was it.

The day I set up my WiiU, I walked around the house testing it's range. Shuts off literally walking through the bedroom door.

Oh shit. Grandia is the only RPG I've played with combat I loved, and it was all because of that damn bar. I just went from "never heard of this" to "just hook it to my veins" in record time.

Get an Amazon Rewards Visa, then use it for everything. When problems like yours come up you've got a nice bank of Amazon credit to use.

I paid for a PS4 and then some just paying my bills/mortgage and various purchases with it for a year

Wow that looks awesome - a Grandia puzzle platformer? Hell yes. I'll be watching this closely, that could be my 2nd most anticipated game after X now. 2014 is looking like an awesome year for gaming - the WiiU lineup is taking off, the new consoles will be out, and we may even see the oculus rift hit retail. I feel like we're in the cusp of a very exciting time for the hobby.

I'll admit, I'm interested in Windwaker as I never finished it on the 'cube. I'd just be a lot more interested in it on the 3DS. If there is confirmed off screen play I'll probably pick it up since I won't be stuck in the living room to play but I sure wish I could take it to campus with me (spoiled gamer problems).

Yes. Galaxy felt like a return to greatness. I didn't expect another Galaxy game for Wii U but at least something as interesting.

People tend to compare Nintendo to Disney. I'd say this is a pretty apt comparison. Right now Nintendo is in their era of making direct-to-video Aladdin sequels.

Meh you can be negative. I'm with you on the burn on the WiiU. The thing is that I know that the games will be out because I know that Nintendo's IPs will always be fun to play. May not be mind-blowing but still enjoyable to play. Which is what I want when I play games at times.
