Sonic Lost World is available to buy in Aus from the eShop (for $79 which is far above what I'll pay for any new game)...
... however there are no reviews anywhere except for some good scores from Famitsu (9/9/9/9)
I know Famitsu was historically very hard to please. Is that still true or do they give 40's away now? Because that is damn close to the coveted quadruple ten.

I don't think they give out perfect scores very much, even nowadays...

I can see the parents going to the store with the ad in hand, ready to buy the Wii U, only to find out that it's actually not a Wii U and that what they want is $200 more.

Honestly, depending on how much the clerk knows you could probably convince them it was just ringing up incorrectly if you had the ad in hand.

Seems like it would be difficult, since there isn't a Wii U sports resort bundle.
You would be demanding to pay a price for a completely different item than is both described and pictured. The only thing that you could kinda maybe get anyone to notice is the single Wii U logo and mention of Wii U.
But hey, some people (on both sides, sales and customer) have no idea and so maybe somewhere, somehow it will work once for somebody.
Any thoughts on what else I should pick up for my Wii U?
I got Wind Waker and Wonderful 101, and I've got a preorder on Sonic for tomorrow.
I've already played NSMB U and Monster Hunter, so I don't really think I want to buy those again.

Actually they do and on some pretty flawed games to boot. Sometime after the OoT review they got pretty soft. I'd say around 2002. They didn't go into full on buy us off mode until 2008ish.
According to Wikipedia, they've only given 22 games a perfect score

Unfortunately, I saw this coming. The worlds looked gorgeous but the gameplay in every trailer just looked off. I guess Mario and W101 (after an inevitable price drop) are the last wiiU games I'm getting until next year.
GameTrailers gave it 7.6, but that's the highest I've seen.
There's a neogaf thread that's collating the scores. Some mentioned that the control issues get better with time.
Personally, I think Rayman, Donkey Kong and Mario set an incredible high bar for any would-be challengers in the platformer genre. I'll be passing on Sonic.
Best Youtube comment: I dunno, I think RawMom might be juicing.
I nearly bought Game and Wario for similar reasons, but I could use a good minigame collection to play with the kids. The free WiiMote+ (for NintendoLand Zelda!!!) pretty much makes it a must buy.
Man if I wasn't living in a house by myself I think I'd be all over a wiiu. The games I've seen played multiplayer look like a lot of fun, and the wii was some of the most fun I had when I had 2 room mates. That wiiu party video looks pretty cool.

It's already started
Sonic fans will inevitably try to reconcile bad games starting day one
After the debacle that surrounded Wonderful 101 and it's 'imprecise controls' I do have some healthy scepticism whenit comes to review sites declaring games as too difficult, unfair, poorly controlling, etc.
Having said that, Wonderful 101 ranged from poor (6s) to completely mind blowing (10s... which is the correct score).

Why Sega? Why? Why do you hate your western fanbase?
