Installed a new video card, screen going black on certain sites

I think this may be flash? Java? Something like that? On Gmail and some other sites, using my new LED monitor connected over HDMI to my new 660 Ti causes my monitor to go black. My secondary monitor still works and if I move the website over to my secondary it works fine. It was repeatable on a site yesterday in that anytime I moved the mouse the screen would black out, I would wait for a second and it would come back, repeat. Until I moved the window to the other monitor. IS this some weird HDMI conflict? Some software thing? Should I just reformat and be done with it? What the hell?

Can we assume you've updated everything (drivers, flash, etc, etc, etc?)

Removed old drivers and installed new ones when the new card got put in, I use Chrome which flash tells me is updated all the way, windows is updated and such, etc. So yeah, should be.

Refresh rate mismatch? Make sure all nvidia settings are set to "application controlled" when possible?

  • SniperGuySniperGuy SniperGuyGaming Registered User regular
I believe the Nvidia settings are set as such. How would I tell if it's a refresh rate mismatch? It does also only happen if the window is maximized.

Are you sure your power supply can handle the new card?

It's having zero problem running games like SRIV at full speed and max settings, I hardly think Chrome is making it draw more power than it can handle.

As a temporary to permanent fix depending on how fixed you want it - if its a flash website this might do something - you can right click on the flash applet, go to settings and disable hardware acceleration.

This solved some issues I was having with Youtube videos just being black after installing a new video card and I haven't ever turned the acceleration back on. I haven't had any issues since and I haven't noticed any problems with having flash not using the graphics card.

Just tried that, no dice. Sadly does not help.

Try disabling Chrome's hardware acceleration and see if that helps. (Settings -> Show Advanced Settings -> Untick "Use hardware acceleration when available").

    No change, unfortunately.

Is it only Chrome? Will the sites open in Firefox on the LED monitor?

Well this is interesting. it may have fixed? More testing is needed, but after installing firefox, it doesn't do it anymore. In firefox OR chrome. What?

Chrome is bad at doing it's codecs properly lately, I've jumpstarted it's flash codecs off fox before. ( Is why it's handy to always have both even if only using one)

Hrm, still occurring. Really not sure what's happening. Happens in Firefox as well as Chrome.

If you swap the two monitors (assuming they are both hdmi), does the issue follow the monitor or does it stick with the port?

One is not HDMI, so I can't do that.

If I change the "Multiple Displays" to "duplicate these displays" it doesn't do it, but then the main monitor is running at 1400x900 and it's pointless since you know, same thing on both monitors. Changing the resolution on the main to a lower res doesn't help either.

So after this being an off and on issue for a while, I've just gotten a new hard drive, reformatted, installed the newest drivers...and it's still happening. Is this some sort of refresh rate error? Something just wrong with the monitor? I cannot fathom the problem because some websites work, but stuff like google/youtube just refuse. I don't get it!

What model of monitor is it?

    It's an Acer S230HL

I'm also getting a lot of weird screen tearing I wasn't before the format. Maybe a different issue?

The only thing I've found in trying to search reports of people with similar issues was someone who found, inexplicably, that unplugging their monitor's audio cables and found that it resolved an issue where the screen was going black while trying to play flash games.

Turning off hardware acceleration is the number one suggested fix but you've already tried that.
