Don't worry, you're not alone in that one. The first chapter is slow to get into but once the story picks up the pace....goal.

I posed the question about Robin's mystery game to a fellow on an IRC channel I frequent. He thinks it might be Lux-Pain. The Wikipedia article certainly seems to fit the bill.

More on-topic, I'm quite looking forward to these. I still haven't gotten around to playing any of the Ys games nor Carpe Fulgur's two EGS translations despite owning them for quite some time.

I beat the first game awhile ago and don't remember much about it. All I do remember is being grossed out at the whole romance arc in the game.

Well, I'm sort of indifferent to it, mostly because of desensitization. Once you've seen enough anime to know that the circumstances are about as Japan-tropey as it possibly gets, so you've seen it about a billion times.
The Brother and Sister combo that just happen to not actually be blood-related so it's still technically okay if they go at it.

Same here and I'm considering doing the same thing with SC. With the three games being so closely connected, I don't want to play the first two and completely forget the story by the time 3rd comes out in another 2-3 years.

So what is "The Game" he refers to for people who maybe don't follow this stuff that closely?

I've seen some guesses that it might have been No More Heroes, which is probably the one that makes the most sense given the specifically non-specific description as well as the time frame.

In other news, Now that Carpe Fulgur's site is no longer cratering, we can finally read their other announcement blog entry from the 6th.

    http://www.carpefulgur.com/drakblog/?p=48
This is the post I’ve wanted to make for two years now.

So, on very nearly the third anniversary of Recettear’s launch, we can at last say that yes, our fourth project is a collaboration with XSEED Games to localize and publish Trails in the Sky SC. This has, on some level, been in the works and worked on since before the first reveal of Fortune Summoners. So very much, from so very many, has gone into making this a reality, and at long, long last we can finally tell everyone everything about the long-discussed “Project Four”, which is not just our largest localization to date, but is without hyperbole one of the largest projects in the history of the industry.

This marks many things for us: our largest and perhaps most “important” game to date, the proper realization of the other half of our business model, and the end of our long silence. Let us begin with the latter.

The Lengthy Silence, The Health Of Carpe Fulgur

First of all, an apology is in order: I am sorry that we’ve had to be quiet about this for so long, and more importantly that we ended up scaring a number of our fans with our silence, as the quiet led many to believe that Carpe Fulgur had folded. This was not the case at all; we have been, at many times, busier in the period after the release of Fortune Summoners than we have been at any other time in our history until now. There have simply been so many moving parts to this particular project, so many interests to align, that speaking of what Project Four was until now was not possible. In a way, Project Four has not just involved Trails SC; elements of this extend all the way back to the Steam release of Ys: The Oath In Felghana in March of 2012. Though CF did not participate directly in the localization of that game, I, myself, did have a small hand in making that release happen. Getting Felghana, and its siblings, onto Steam to help prove a market even existed for a product like SC was pivotal to the project moving forward. There were so many pitfalls that the project could have faced that announcing it would have been, until very recently, premature.

Our silence does not reflect inactivity or a lack of will to continue on our part – just the opposite, in fact. Carpe Fulgur has never been healthier. Our warchest and cash buffer, even post-taxes, is quite large. And it’s in part because of our legions of fans, both old and new – in the midst of this new announcement, we can also say that Recettear has now sold three hundred thousand copies since its launch nearly three years ago to the day. Chantelise and Fortune Summoners have also been very successful for us – all our products have, to date, turned a profit for us inside of six months, and then proceeded to produce nothing but pure profit from there on out. Carpe Fulgur will not be going anywhere for a very long time.

The Grand Project & The Other Side Of The Coin

Which is, really, no small part of the reason we agreed to work on Trails in the Sky in the first place. Trails is unquestionably our largest project to date; the main scenario alone is larger than the entire script for Recettear. It is a project that we knew would take an extraordinarily long time to actually finish – a project that we knew many companies had previously rejected for this very reason. Because of our significant, continuing profit and large reserve of assets, we knew that we were in a unique position to work on the game – we could do so without fear for our future, and our time investment would be “wasted” only if the game tanked in a catastrophic fashion – which, between the PC and PSP releases, should not happen. We were, in short, in a unique position to make English Trails SC a reality – one which would not come in time to others to get the game out in the sort of time-frame necessary for it to be well-received.

And this ties in with the mission of Carpe Fulgur, the principal reason we are in business: to ensure that deserving, excellent games can get exposure outside of Japan, and are given the localization they deserve. This is a subject Robin will be discussing at length in a post of his own very soon here. (Edit: that post can be found here.)

This is the greater part of the reason Carpe Fulgur exists – our “grand project”, if you will. Previously our focus has been purely on independently-made software, but ever since CF’s inception it has always been our intention to offer our services to anyone who desired them. Trails SC is the first project to be the other side of that coin – working with another company to bring a product they wish to publish to English-speaking audiences.

Does this mean we are “selling out”, abandoning the independent market? Not at all. We have another, smaller announcement coming legitimately soon (mostly as soon as questions about multiplayer and the actual title are sorted out) concerning an independently-made game from a developer our fans are very familiar with, and we are giving serious consideration to at least one title we discovered at this year’s Summer Comiket. But our mission transcends the boundaries of “indie” and “corporate” – if we can help bring a title to English audiences without actively harming CF, we are willing to do so. Trails is the fulfillment of that ideal.

    Silver Will, Golden Wings

So Trails itself, then. Speaking personally, this is a series I’ve wanted to work on ever since CF began informal operation back in 2009 – I’ve known about the series’ reputation for quality for a long time, and how no localization firm in the States was willing to attempt it due to the size of the games, their scripts, and for a long time, their release platforms. Conventional wisdom said that Japanese RPGs simply wouldn’t sell on the PC. It was a notion I doubted for a long time, but until a few years ago was in no position to question. Even as CF began operation, however, I suspected it was the perfect title for us – big, meaty, story-and-character-rich, something die-hard RPG fans could sink their teeth into deeply. A turn-based, position-based combat system that, while not the same as an Infinity Engine game (for example), would nonetheless the feel familiar to anyone who has played an isometric RPG, Western or Japanese-made. Not always wildly innovative, perhaps, but willing and able to surprise even the prepared player. It was exactly the sort of title I would want to play on the PC – and I suspect a very great number of our fans will agree with me when they try it.

As you will have seen elsewhere, the currently scheduled Steam release includes both “FC” – the first part of Trails – and “SC”, the title we are working on now. To be clear, we have not contributed to the localization of FC – this was done some years ago and nearly drove poor Jessica Chavez of XSEED mad in the attempt. This is another small part of the reason our work has taken a while – we have been trying to pace ourselves as best we can so that our personal lives do not suffer from work. SC, or “Second Chapter”, will be our work. While Ms. Chavez and others at XSEED will be checking over what we do and contributing as necessary (and a large part of the point of the exercise is to help XSEED have resources free to do other things), in the end, the text you see in the game will be our work, and you can expect the same quality of localization as found in our other products.

Trails SC is a title I’ve come to appreciate even more having worked on it, and I cannot wait to bring our localization of it to you.

    The Dream Shall Never Die

    So what happens now?

First, we continue work. While we’ve made a great deal of progress on SC, work is still (yes, still) not yet quite complete on it. Once the work of tackling the entire script is done, we shall be assisting XSEED in QA testing and other tasks, especially relating to the PC version.

Secondly, our silence ends. The largest reason for our silence since the release of Fortune Summoners was that any detailed discussion of what we are doing would necessitate discussing the situation around Trails in detail – and any other discussion felt awkward without being able to acknowledge what we were doing currently. With this no longer a problem, expect much more regular communication from us, including more game announcements and blog posts. (The latter may sound familiar to old fans, but there really is nothing preventing us from talking at this point – there are no more true secrets to keep.) You may also expect somewhat significant updates to the website – while this design served us well when we were still small, it is perhaps time we got something a little more… substantial.

Finally, what happens right now is that I thank you all. It has been the unflagging, unwavering support of our fans, old and new, that have even made attempting this possible. We do this for you, and every time your support comes in the form of those big checks from our distributors, we’re a little more humbled. Our gratitude is essentially endless – and we hope our upcoming project satisfies as many people as our previous efforts have.

It is because of you that the dream shall never die. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

And here’s to the coming Trails.

    Oh cool, Kiseki series thread

    >and how no localization firm in the States was willing to attempt it due to the size of the games, their scripts
For reference, here's the script to the Vita release of Ao no Kiseki.
    mmucfm.jpg
Also I'm going to laugh like hell when all the bad guys run away TO BE CONTINUED IN A BUNCH OF GAMES THAT WON'T BE IN ENGLISH EVER

Seriously, it's like every game is the final episode of the Giant Robo OVA

Edit: Just a reminder- The "complete" (fully voiced, additional stuff, etc.) version of Zero no Kiseki has been released for the Vita, its sequel Ao no Kiseki is also getting a Vita release next year, and Sen no Kiseki is out this month.

Edit: And I'm just going to have to let this off my chest after seeing some people refer to Sen as "trails in the flash" which makes total sense

"Trails in the Sky" is a fucking TERRIBLE translation. I mean on its own its fine but it's not. It makes no sense when applied to the sequels (HUR TRAILS IN THE ZERO) and more importantly it doesn't even fucking convey the double meaning in the original title in the first place.

    (SC story stuff)
It's referring to the trail OF the sept therion of "sora" (space, not even sky), the aureole. If that isn't obvious enough it turns out that the zero and ao in Zero/Ao no Kiseki are ALSO referring to a new sept therion and this time the titles don't even have double meanings on their own.

None of this is conveyed through "Trails in the Sky" so what's the point of keeping a half-assed translations? Half-assed translations are the worst fucking kind of localisation, they ought to have just changed the title to something that made sense. Gah.

So I started a new game of this because I was only a couple hours in anyway and this time I'll follow a guide to not miss any BP and holy shit my dudes cannot hit the broad side of a barn. Even the enemies that aren't supposed to be taken out with magic dodge everything.

Does this get better once I have some levels under my belt or should I just get used to spamming magic?

I picked it up on a lark from Fry's a long time ago and really enjoyed the game. And then I fried my PSP.
(Protip: don't plug in an 11 amp power supply into something designed for 1.1. I don't care if the plug's the same size.)

It's based on not just the number of the same color, but the number of crystals and the number of each color crystal.

I.e. EP Cut 2 is Time x 2, Space x 3, Mirage x2. However, EP 2 is also Time x 2, Space x 3, Mirage x3. So if you add one more Mirage crystal, you'll also get EP 2 as well as EP Cut 2.

Or, Haze is Earth x 2, Mirage x 2. However, Cloak is Fire x 2, Mirage x 2. So if you socketed two Earths, two Fires, and two Mirages, you'd get both Haze and Cloak.

So essentially you probably qualified for those spells from whatever combination of that crystal and whichever other crystals Shera has on her.

Once the story picks up you won't care.

But I believe I ended my first playthrough at around 46 hours, counting some time spend leveling/farming.

    Forgot about this thread
So I just cleared Sen no Kiseki and HOLY SHIT THAT FUCKING CLIFFHANGER ENDING. It's worse than Sora no Kiseki FC because that at least had some form of closure to the events in the game. It'd be like if SC ended when the final dungeon appeared. And now an at least one year wait for the next game? Damn it Falcom work faster.

Some people on the internet are throwing fits over the load times but they weren't a problem for me. I was playing the PS3 version though, maybe it's the Vita version that has problems.

But yeah it was great, and also longer than Zero and Ao (they took me 35 and 41 hours respectively; Sen was 58). I'd say it's a decent enough spot for people new to the series to jump in, too, so think about it.

    Edit:
    Blackjack wrote: »

They changed the system in Sen so that's how it works now.

    Edit:

Wrote this for somewhere else, just going to post it here too.

Just going to write an intro thing for new people.

How are the Kiseki games related?

Legend of Heroes 6: Sora no Kiseki (Trails in the Sky) was the first Kiseki game, followed up by Sora no Kiseki Second Chapter (Sora no Kiseki was retroactively renamed to First Chapter). Sora no Kiseki The 3rd is an after/side-story to the first two games (the main story for them ends in SC) that links it to the sequels.

Legend of Heroes 7: Zero no Kiseki is a new story arc taking place in the same universe. The overreaching arc is linked, and there are recurring characters, but the main cast is entirely new and it is for the most part detached from the Sora trilogy. Like with Sora the main story is split up into two parts, Zero no Kiseki being the first and Ao no Kiseki being the second.

Sen no Kiseki is the latest installment in the series, taking place during Zero and Ao no Kiseki. Its main story is incomplete as of yet, with the sequel to it promising to reach past the events of Ao no Kiseki.

Sora no Kiseki FC is currently available in English for the PSP as Trails in the Sky FC. A Steam release is scheduled for 2014. Steam and PSN releases for SC are also scheduled for 2014.

There are currently no further plans for English releases.

    Platforms for the games are
Sora FC: PC, PSP, PS3 (HD)
Sora SC: PC, PSP, PS3 (HD)
Sora T3: PC, PSP, PS3 (HD)
Zero: PC, PSP, Vita (enhanced version)
Ao: PSP, Vita (enhanced version, 2014)
    Sen: Vita, PS3

Though the Kiseki series is under the Legend of Heroes brand, they are completely unrelated to previous Legend of Heroes games. Also, while Zero no Kiseki was initially numbered as LoH 7, this was dropped later and Ao no Kiseki is only labelled as Legend of Heroes with no number. Sen no Kiseki should be LoH 8, but it isn't numbered either.

Falcom also released the action game Nayuta no Kiseki for the PSP but as of now it seems to be completely unrelated to the main Kiseki series (a character has cameos in Sen as stuffed toys, but that's it)

THIS SOUNDS GREAT WHERE DO I START

    1) I don't understand Japanese :(

If you want to start right now, get Trails in the Sky FC for the PSP! Or wait for the Steam release which will be out in under a year. After that wait for SC, and then get that. And then pray. Or get all your friends and family to buy the game too because that will certainly improve chances of at least Sora 3rd and Zero being released in English (because they have PC versions and can thus be Steamed). The fate of Ao and Sen are kind of sketchy at the moment though so keep praying.

    2) I understand Japanese!

The definitive versions of the Sora no Kiseki games available right now are the PS3 HD releases (the PC versions lack the extras added to the PSP versions, and FC PC isn't even voiced).

    BUT!

Zero was previously not available on PC, but when it was released in Taiwan for the PC they used that as a base for a PC version. So it's entirely possible that they release new PC versions based off the English Steam versions. So for now, wait.

The definitive version of Zero no Kiseki is the Vita version which is fully voiced and has extra stuff. A similar release for Ao is scheduled for 2014.

Sen no Kiseki has just been released for the PS3 and Vita. Reports say that the Vita version has longer loading times, so it's recommended that you stick with the PS3 version.

Recap for games for each platform:

    PC: Sora 1, 2, 3, Zero
    PSP: Sora 1, 2, 3, Zero, Ao
Vita: Sora 1 (PSN), 2 (PSN), 3 (PSN), Zero (PSN or Evol), Ao (PSN or Evol), Sen
    PS3: Sora 1 (HD), 2 (HD), 3 (HD), Sen

The only platform on which you can play ALL the games right now is the Vita. Don't let this bother you too much, though, because save inheritance only exists within each mini-series"

    Sora 1 -> 2 -> 3
    Zero -> Ao

    And presumably
Zero Evol (Vita) -> Ao Evol (Vita)
    Sen -> Sequel

Sora no Kiseki for the PSP and PS3 does have a cross-save feature that lets you share saves, though, as does Sen no Kiseki for the PS3 and Vita.

Zero no Kiseki for the PSP and Vita do NOT let you share saves.

I finally got started on actually playing Zero Evolution but am taking my time because they announced Ao Evolution for 2014 some time ago but don't even have a season yet let alone a month. Bah.

    Edit:

So yeah I've been chipping away at Zero Evolution. Some lines are left unvoiced (in the middle of conversations so it's clearly not done on purpose), though "main scenario is fully voiced" was one of the big selling points most of the NPCs have really bad voice acting (for the love of god the fucking mafia attack dogs are clearly some guy failing really hard at making dog sounds) and some of the upscaling is kind of... yeeeeaaaaaah.

In 2014, Xseed will publish The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC for PC and PSP in North America. Additionally, the first Trails in the Sky game will be made available for PC, too. Now, we have a slightly better idea of when one can expect the two games.

Responding to a fan asking when Trails in the Sky would be available for Steam on Facebook, an Xseed representative replied: “Shooting for early 2014 for FC [first chapter], and probably more middle of the year for SC.”

Trails in the Sky SC is being localized by Carpe Fulgur, who say the game is their largest localization project to date.

I'm about 7-8 hours into Trails FC right now.
Just got to Bose. The ship Cassius was on is missing, so Estelle/Joshua/Schera intend to look for him as long as they can get past the Bose government or somehow work with them, I assume.

I'm curious about the 4 color-coded towers, and how those will tie into things. They've talked about ancient ruins, built by supposedly ancient people. Something about the Aureole? Which is kind of a silly word, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. The talk about the towers and all the characters you meet and interact with during the various jobs from the Bracer Guild board help to flesh out the game world quite a bit.

I really liked investigating the mayor's ransacked house and hunting down the crystal thief. Seeing a giant shadow and then watching a huge airship come in was a big surprise. I didn't expect such a scale in the game. But now that I've walked 1/4 of the way across the country, I'm starting to get an idea of just how big this game will be.

I just re-read this thread, which reminded me that I need to put a +To Hit on Schera's orbment, cause she misses ALL THE TIME.

The biggest thing about the game is the worldbuilding. Locations are to scale. Towns are actually towns that make sense for people to live in, with living quarters above shops, restaurants, groceries, general stores and the like. There's in-world newspapers. NPCs change their conversations after every single last event/quest... sometimes they talk about the local current events, sometimes they talk about what's going on in the world, and sometimes they're just talking smalltalk.

    It feels real and believable.

And it's another reason why it's so tragic we're so far behind the Japanese releases on what is one of the most criminally underlocalized best RPG series out there.

One thing I'm happy with is that status effects are useful. I was able to consistently take an enemy out of the fight for a few turns at a time by hitting them with confuse.

Not a single toilet in the entire world though!

But yeah, great worldbuilding. The NPCs are one of the things I loved the most about Sen- Every single goddamned character in Thors military academy is unique and has their own story which develops over the course of the game.

Doesn't help that the optional shit just lying around includes entire novels, huh?

So, I've never played Trails in the Sky on the PSP (mainly because I don't have one) but when I heard about Carpe Fulgar doing the translation for SC, I started looking around...

...now I feel like I'm checking XSEED's facebook and twitter every single day looking for anything about when FC is coming to Steam. It's pretty much already become a Day 1 purchase in my mind.

So, anyone have some sort of extra insight? when do I need to start making time to play this!?

Still slowly chipping away at Trails FC.

I was just in a boss fight, and had an awesome stroke of luck. The big bad, like most bosses in the game, had a ton of HP and a lot of defense, so even if you hit him hard, he's not going down quickly.

One of Joshua's orbment slots has a 10% chance to petrify gem.

After buffing the party, I got close with Joshua and used Double Hit. The first hit petrified the boss. Any hit on a petrified enemy kills them outright. Apparently this includes bosses, because the second hit killed him.

    Hell. Yes.
