I can't believe so many people don't have their pins displayed.
I'm pretty happy with the results I got with combining colored corkboard and picture frames. Both can be procured relatively cheap at craft stores in the US. Plus there are lots of ways to customize your setup to make it look professional. I considered making a stencil of the Pinny Arcade or Penny Arcade logo to spray paint on the cork, but I ended up deciding against the idea with how close together I display my pins.
All of my pin backings and original packaging get stored in a safe location so that I can still use them in a trade if necessary.
I'm not a fan of shadow boxes though because of how large, heavy, and restrictive they are. And there's no way I'd hide my pins away in a binder either though, I've spent too much time and money not to display my pins.
I really want my display to be more than just "Pins I collected" so the idea is to display them in smaller sets amongst comic prints and posters. But that means I need a lot of different sized frames from ones that can hold a single Pin, to holding three comic prints and 4 Pins, up to poster sized. Anyone with ideas of where to get them in that size variety in a single style, I would appreciate it.
I'm not sure if you have them there, but try Hobby Lobby. They have a lot of multiple sized frames so they should be able to meet your needs.
I'm displaying mine in a frame also, though a very large frame. I know some people like the idea of being able to move the pins around after they put them in(i.e. in shadowbox), but my plan is once they are in they are in and not moving. I'm going to have a frame with all pins from 2012, then a separate one I think with all pins from 2012....since yearly seems most logical to me. I actually made a summary of the Tithe by combining comics, and I rather liked how it turned out so I will have that, along with my pins in there. The only bad things about doing it the way I am is 1. I have to wait until all the 2013 pins come out. 2. putting it in a large frame means I have to modify the frame so that I don't have to worry about things like the pins touching the glass and such.
Ok, so I'm going shadowbox shopping this weekend. What pins do we think are going to come out between now and the next PAX East?
We've got the Hanna pin, the Halloween pins (of which there will be four, I believe), the November 15th Anniversary pin, and then what else?
Mike has said there will be two Christmas sets in December. After that he said about one every other month...but we don't know if it will be sets or single pins. Nor do we know if we will get one Jan/March, or just one released Feb before East.

So, for sake of space, here's what I'll tentatively plan for:
-Everything out now
-Hanna
-Halloween set (four)
-15th Anniversary (one)
-Christmas sets (eight)
-One to two spring sets (~six, splitting the difference)
So twenty more pins on top of what I have.
Unless I stick to chronological year and just say 2012/2013 is one year, then 2014 is one year, then so on. I think I just talked myself into that.
I like my modular cork board display, because it lets me work around not knowing how many pins I'll get at a given time. If suddenly the brain squirrels take over and acquire for me ten new pins, I can just grab a new corkboard square, paint it black, and put it with the others. It's also really easy to re-arrange.
Also, I want to hang them all up together with some comic prints. All I need are some comic prints. And a way to mount the pin boards. And some more permanent walls.
Hey team, does anyone have a spare PAX East 13 patch? I believe it is red. I just realized that if I have all three (I've got a Prime and an East), I can use them in my shadowbox. Let me know!
Chiming in here: the thing that makes it hard as a collector to get pins is how many 3rd party pins will be at shows. If the amount of 3rd party pins per show goes to 50 (for example) it might be impossible to have a complete collection. It's what worries me the most about it, Prime was difficult enough with 20 third party pins (although only 19 were actually present).
Basically I don't want to spend of all of PAX getting pins and worrying how to get the 3rd party pins at other shows. I'd also like to not have to spend all of PAX looking for pins (especially considering I'm enforcing so I have less time to do PAX already).
I like the idea of 3rd parties having 1 pin to showcase their brand or a particular game at that show. It actually provides some historical record in a sense as to what was coming out, what people were excited for, etc. I'm hoping that Magic continues this trend, and we get to see more planeswalker pins (or a black lotus!).
Killer instinct pin edition made for Pinny Arcade collectors? First two pins come with the game but there are ten more? I don't want to buy the damn game to get Pinny Arcade pins...
The Pin Ultimate Edition was designed by Penny Arcade and includes the first two pins (Jago and Killer Instinct 3D Logo) from a collection of 16, packed in a premium box that unfolds into a pin display. Start your collection now!
Yeah this honestly pisses me off. That being said @ayefkay PA is still on the retreat so they probably won't say anything about it until Monday or Wednesday (when they've gotten some time to catch up at the office)
i REALLY dont like this idea to be honest, especially so early in the pinny arcade life cycle...i can do without a 'special case' but i dont want to have to reconsider my next console purchase over this...
Well, we knew this sort of thing would happen. If you want those pins, you'll need to trade with other people for them.
Fortunately, I've passed the point in which I felt the need to collect every Pinny Arcade pin; otherwise, I'd be pretty upset about this news. Even as someone who has preordered the Xbox One, I want nothing to do with the new Killer Instinct.
Ouch, this is painful to be sure. I guess worst case scenario, the game might make a pretty rad Christmas gift for a buddy who is picking up an Xbox One. Hopefully we can quickly get news that the two pins are just sort of a "preview" though, and we can get them along with the rest of the 16 later.
Each character will get its own pin and the official Killer Instinct page will reveal surprise pins, every month until the end of the season, that can be earned through your community and in-game efforts.
@Ayefkay we can seethe quietly in the corner together! :P
Hopefully they'll clarify and say something like "no you don't need to buy the game, you can get the pins in other ways"
I'm pretty sure those other ways will be 'trade with other Pin Pals".
Given that I have no interest in owning an XB-One or Killer Instinct, I'm actually pretty relieved to find the brain squirrels laying dormant on the issue.
Until I see the pins of course.
"Sometimes I doubt your commitment to 'Sparkle Motion'."
I'm not that surprised to see Pins start showing up as pre-order bonuses for games (Rayman set that precedent). I am however, really surprised and honestly upset to see a 16 pin run for a game that such a small part of the fanbase is going to want. There's what? About 75ish pins released/announced, and now Microsoft gets 16? That's 15% of the total Pinny Arcade pins.
I hope to god this means that every copy has the SAME 2 pins, and the other 14 will be available at PAX East Behemoth style.
First two pins are confirmed to be Jago and the KI logo. The rest are apparently available via "community and in-game efforts," whatever that amounts to.
Let me just get a beep boop on your PAX badge real quick!

Additional pins sold separately or available as part of future promotional activities.
See, this isn't the first Pin to come with a pre-order attached. Rayman did the same thing. But there were a few differences. Rayman was on multiple platforms, which were in a mature phase. It was a one time deal, and could be cancelled afterwards.
I'll be sure to add this into the latest FAQ so we can find out more about these other 14 Pins, but I suspect that the two that come with the game are going to be pre-order only. Which makes them $30 each, with a free game/coaster.
I hope "community and in-game efforts" means something unlocked by the base as a whole and not some way to monetize individual achievement.
My concern is that "in-game efforts" means that Pin Pals who aren't really interested in playing KI, or aren't able to play it at a professional level, will be suddenly out of luck.
You can't get all the pins anymore. I just don't think that's doable. I know how the brain squirrels work but you have to just go after the pins you really like. Not a Killer Instinct fan? Well maybe you will see a Pin Ultimate edition for Halo, or Assassins Creed or some game that you really are into. When I go to Disneyland I am only after Star Wars pins. Maybe some Nightmare before Christmas too.
With that said you will be able to get pins from this set without buying the game. Trading for them is one way obvious but you will also be able to get them in other ways.
I'm getting more annoyed the longer I think on it. It's like they've gone out of their way to make a pin set that only a few people will want.
It's an Xbox One exclusive. All PS4 players are out.
It's a pre-order for a launch title. All late-adopters are out.
It's packaged with a Downloadable code, not even an actual disc copy of the game. All who would buy the set just to get the pins and then sell the disc to recoup the loss are out.
So, to sum up. If you want these pins, you have to be getting an XBox One, at launch, want Killer Instinct, and be fine with having only a digital copy of the game.

True, but I think that's part of what they are looking to do: expand the Pins to make it almost impossible to have a complete collection. Anyone who buys the game is going to have two extras. However, Mike did just say that "PAX is a pretty safe bet" for at least some of the other 14 Pins. And no doubt we can wrangle a few of the "exclusive" Pins from either MS staff or PA staff.
I'm not giving up on a complete collection just yet.

I understand your concerns but just because you are not a KI fan does not mean there are not thousands of them out there. This set might not be for you but I feel like that's okay. We will be making pins for tons of games in the future and you won't always like the game and you might not always like how the company decides to distribute the pin. There's only going to be more and more pins and more and more ways of getting them in the future. Go after the pins you want but don't feel like you need to "catch them all".
I'm happy that i gave up quickly on tring to get every pin. Game i don't like puts out pins... meh. Game i like puts out 25 pins, my wallet will be in trouble.
I'm not even particularly upset about making it hard to get a full set. I already only pick and choose 3rd party pins.
I just feel like these pins could've been handled better. I'm particularly annoyed they're bundled with a digital copy of the game. Even if I was in a position to buy the X1 and a copy of KI, I sure as heck wouldn't want to give up a disc copy just to get a couple pins.
I'd rather the set cost another 20 bucks to cover the pins/case and have it come with the game disc.

Well, I can say I just pre-ordered my copy of the game. Do I have an Xbox One? Obviously nope. Do I plan on getting one? Really not sure. Am I guaranteed to not only have two pins but also a badass way to display them? Hell yes.
Damn you brain squirrels.

Really the only issue here is on how exclusive it will make those two Pins. Are they going to be on-par with Hanna, DLC, or perhaps more out there.
You never know, KI fans might buy this edition and ebay the Pins to save money on the game.
