That's fine. Cull the herd, and soon I alone shall be victorious!! Muwahahahahaha!!! [/supervillainmode]

Really the only issue here is on how exclusive it will make those two Pins. Are they going to be on-par with Hanna, DLC, or perhaps more out there.

You never know, KI fans might buy this edition and ebay the Pins to save money on the game.

I was thinking the same thing, we are going to see losses in the hardcore roster... xD

Hey Vaanrose there is no physical version of the game. You actually cannot buy it as a disc. This is a way of giving a digital only version of a game a physical component you can put on your shelf.

True. 14 Pins post-November release could put it into 2015.

Well, I can say I just pre-ordered my copy of the game. Do I have an Xbox One? Obviously nope. Do I plan on getting one? Really not sure. Am I guaranteed to not only have two pins but also a badass way to display them? Hell yes.

    Damn you brain squirrels.

I did the same. I figure that $30 per Pin, plus a copy of KI isn't so bad. I can always find someone with an XBONE to play it on. I have bought games for systems I didn't own before, and played on my friends.

Really, that's something that used to happen a lot back in the days of NES and Master System.

Welp. I would be lying if I didn't say I am a bit sad/annoyed. I knew Pinny Arcade would be a big thing, but I anticipated actually being able to collect them all. Probably a poor assumption on my part, honestly. I may have to downgrade my status from hardcore collector. :/

Realistically a lot of people are going to be selling off their collections so the value of the pins will drop pretty quickly. It might even be that limited edition pins will only be worth face value now. I understand PA wants to go the Disney route but it's frustrating; if I knew I probably wouldn't have dumped so much money into collecting pins.

Again I understand what they are doing but it's making me (and a lot of collectors) angry over it.

I am interested to see how this affects the community, this is the next big announcement/step since the PAX PRIME pin release and that was when pinny pals was created.

We are going to see change to the current thinking of the hobby, we will see people drop either down to enthusiast or drop out all together.

People need to understand that this model was never created to be seen as a catch them all hobby.
They want to unmotivate hardcore collectors as they want the hobby to be seen as more of a casual collecting hobby.

I'd hold on for a while. As I said, it would not be surprising if MS people had the "collectors only" Pins at PAX, if you can find them. After Prime 14, then I'd say you are out of luck.

I think that we are going to see growth in the community and hobby after this announcement IMO, we are going to see a influx in enthusiasts coming into the fold as they get pins with games.

All I can suggest is like I said before, go after the pins you like. If you want to be "Hardcore" then I don't think that means collecting them all. I think you will probably have a robust collection but no one is going to own them all.

I understand why some people are upset, but I have to say, I'm excited. I was already planning on gettong an xbone and KI. Though not at launch. I guess I will buy this copy then sit on it until I am ready to buy an xbone. @Gabriel, while we have your attention, how many of these pin ultimate editions exist? if I dont preorder it now, is that acceptable? or is it super limited?

I'm so sad... The whole reason I started collecting was because I got in at the ground floor, and (unlike Disney pins) had a chance to collect them all.

Now I have to decide if I want to sell off my collection while I can (this is definitely going to devalue the early pins), or try and keep up. I'm one of *THOSE* collectors...

I haven't had a console since the Megadrive. I went PC for a long time, and just used my friends' consoles for stuff I really wanted that was console only.

I see no reason not to adopt this system again, unless/until I succumb to a console.

I'll probably just aim for the Sabrewulf pin (because I know him through the old Ultimate games) and Tusk, because Uncle Tusk was the abusive agony aunt who answered dumb gamer Q&A on Rare's website back in the 90s.

If neither of those two are pins, well, I don't really care about the rest. :-)

So is anybody else wondering how much they could sell the game code for? I don't intend on buying a Xbox One (at least until a Halo game comes out). And as much as I like the original Killer Instinct for SNES, I'm less then excited for the new game (fighting games result in broken controllers in my home). If I buy this game it'll be 100% for the pins and maybe the collectors pin case.

Welp. I was flirting with the idea of catching them all for a bit there, but buying a game I wouldn't otherwise buy for a console I wasn't going to buy is one step too far for me. I'll have to be just a pinthusiast, and try to make peace with the brain-squirrels... the all-consuming brain-squirrels...

Each character will get its own pin and the official Killer Instinct page will reveal surprise pins, every month until the end of the season, that can be earned through your community and in-game efforts.**

**Additional pins sold separately or available as part of future promotional activities.

What does that mean? Pins for achievements? Pins for leaderboard rankings? Do you still have to buy them after unlocking them?

  • PedroAsaniPedroAsani Brotherhood of the Squirrel [Prime]Registered User regular
Really I think this is largely just shock. We had no idea this was coming, and people hear 16 Pins and freak out. I remember people thinking that the number of Pins at PAX was a lot. That turned out pretty well.

16 Pins, with 2 "exclusive" which I think some people will be able to wrangle from people at PAX. The other 14 will be released over a period in a variety of ways. Monday is when we start to find out how exactly that is.

I guess we find out next week. But I doubt those are true. I think they are going to be rolled out slowly for more general reasons. It may well be that they are free. So suddenly you have 16 Pins for $60. Not too shabby.

It's an interesting business choice, that's for sure.

Up until now it was relatively easy to collect all the currently available pins, short of the DLC pin. Hell I'm in Australia and I still managed to get someone to pick up most of the Prime pins for me, so I think I'm only missing the East set, DLC, and two Prime pins. I could definitely work towards a complete set just by trading.

However the Killer Instinct set news and Gabe's posts about other partnerships in the future, make it very clear that a complete set will be all but impossible. It may even cost you well over a grand depending which console(s) and games you planned to buy this generation.

I wouldn't say I'm mad about it, but probably some combination of disappointed/sad. I'll get over it once Pokemon drops later today.

I definitely find it interesting from a business perspective. I guess they make more money by having a greater number of pins in the wild, and through partnership deals, than they would from enticing hardcore collectors to pursue a complete set? It's interesting to see a collectible product in it's infancy, especially one run by a team who understand the rabid nature of collectors paired with the savvy business mind of Khoo.

Given the way Kiko and Khoo go at each other via fighters, I suspect this was motivated more by "let's do some Pins for this thing we just spent [far too many] hours playing." The exclusive Pins are a tie-in, sure. But no more than the MTG Pins or any of the other 3rd party Pins at Prime.

I'll be very interested to see how you get the other 14 pins from the set.

I think we forget that there are a lot of potential collectors that have no access to a PAX event, and this set will give them more options for collecting and trading.

Well tonight has been a fun night. Saw the post, cursed out loud as I'm not getting a XBone, brain-squirrels did their job, I pre-ordered the game anyway and figured I'd give the game to a friend, read Mike's responses, went through the 7 stages of grief in a matter of minutes, and accepted that I'm no longer hardcore, canceled the pre-order. Still going to get all the pins that I have the ability and want to do so. These pins would be nice, but I'll just stick with getting the ones I want and probably all the ones I can get at whatever pax's I end up going to. Now if you excuse me, I think the brain-squirrels and I are gonna go get a drink before I deal with that whole 7 stages thing again.

@Gabriel are you able to comment on if you helped design the pins for KI? I'd really like to see your take on the characters. :)

My XBOne is already preordered, and KI was one of the 3 games I was planning on getting at launch. Not bummed about there being no disc since I'm going to be doing as much digital only stuff as I can.

I think it is pretty neat to see these pins start to get some real traction.

Not being able to go to Prime or Aus (and with East being questionable depending on when passes go on sale) I had already given up on having a full set. I was planning to just focus on games I like and the main set. What annoys me is that I love Killer Instinct, but short of a miracle will not be getting an XBONE any time soon (if ever). Pretty bummed that even getting a set of the pins I like will impossible now. I left Magic for pins because I could no longer afford to keep up with it. Now I am not sure about this either.
