I think Suda 51 makes pretty bad video games
Though I never finished K7, I just loved spending all the upgrade points on the kid with the 2 guns and just unloading infinite bullets on all my problems until they died, especially the ones that are specifically supposed to be killed by other Killers
More Bullets was always a simpler and more elegant solution than switching to Dan or the Wrestler
I never played Killer 7 and didn't really like No More Heroes combat, which felt super clunky to me
But even if you like those games

His older stuff, like NMH 1&2, Killer 7, and Flower Sun and Rain is pretty good, though definitely not for everyone.
Basically, I think Suda 51 has fallen down the same whole as many anime/manga labels in trying to appeal to the "otaku" crowd, who just spend mountains of cash on merchandise related to properties they like. It's just that the venn diagram of otaku's and creepers is basically just one big circle, so it alienates everyone else to some degree.
The overworld and its quirkiness (like dumpster diving for t-shirts) are missed, as are the creepy voice samples for the bosses and other similar little touches, but I think that the boss fights themselves are better in the sequel overall. And the mini games too, by a good measure.
Unfortunately, that's the only thing I like
