Expecting something different in their female characters at this point is being sort of disingenuous. This is how Houser's games work, don't expect different. This formula has netted him zillions of dollars, and frankly, I doubt he sees any reason to change his stripes, writing wise, at this point. None of the games have a female protagonist, aside from the first couple wherein male/female was simply a different sprite. At best you could reference Catalina in 3 who is the rather capable antagonist.

Excuse his work by saying "Well, all his stuff is misogynistic" doesn't make his female characters any more compelling.

It's always been misogynist, so nobody should point out that it's misogynist?
Who ended up kidnapped, beaten, threatened with rape, and had to be rescued by John Marston.
just like cousin roman? so its equal oppertunity?
That's a disingenuous comparison. Roman, for one, is not the primary repersentative of his gender in the game. For another, if I recall correctly, none of the violence against him was sexual in nature.
Look, I haven't played V, so I can't judge it. But let's not pretend Dan Houser writes women well, when he tries to write them at all.
I make no excuse for it, but you're kidding yourself if you think he's going to change. You can discuss it up and down, but this is simply how it is. Pointing it out is akin to saying the sky is blue or rain is wet; It's a waste of time. If you find it inexcusable, etc, then vote with your wallet. I won't bother saying anything else, because that's how these threads turn into poop.

isn't this the character that's executed as a joke at the end of the game?

I think it's telling that Houser's attempt to not give us the same kind of woman resulted in Kate, a woman with no character except for being a bit of a nag.

Yeah seriously guys, when has feedback and discussion ever led to any change whatsoever?
Pretty sure society and its media have never changed, and that the treatment of minorities (who always fight against those who are comfortable with and profit from the status quo) has never improved even a little bit.
All this is pointless! Nothing will ever change! There's no reason to speak out against it or even discuss it. You're all deluding yourselves.
Guess what bro, even if Rockstar never changes this (and this is not the fact you state it is), discussion of such topics, getting people to think about this, is always worthwhile.
Saying and doing nothing because "lol it's pointless anyways" is such a bullshit cynical and defeatist belief.
I think people are throwing around misogyny with too much abandon. For the game to be misogynistic it needs to imply some very real hatred of women, which would in turn imply the developers themselves hate women. Which I do not get at all. I will say the Rockstar doesn't have a very high opinion of American society, and that opinion comes out in the charecterization of the ambiance in the game. The characters that are of any import themselves are entirely different.
Anyone not a main character get's this treatment, and it's not limited on a gender basis. The main characters themselves (at the nearly halfway point) are not in any way shape or form sterling examples of humanity. The women you interact with: Mike's wife, Franklin's aunt, etc - they are caricatures of behaviors the developers are seeing in American society. . .as are the male characters you interact with.
I could see this complaint of misogyny if this were a male power fantasy simulator. . .it's not. In the slightest (it would be nice though if there were female police). Could there have been a female protaganist. Probably. Might have been a more interesting game. However I think the label being lobbed is a bit much.
I'm afraid that your viewpoint is literally what allows misogyny to proliferate. Just like you do not need to wear a white hood and robe in the KKK to be racist, no moreso do you need to actively despise women to be misogynistic and contribute to the overall subordination of women in society/around the world.
Many things contribute to our culture. Culture is an aggregate. Portrayals of women in our entertainment are one of them.
No, that's Maria. Catalina dies when Claude hits her helicopter with an RPG.
my mistake, I've never actually played 3 all the way through
This brings up a good point though, when you can't even remember the difference in women between one getting blown up in a helicopter and another being killed in a shockingly bad sexist joke.

For me personally, up until a couple years ago I was the stereotypical target audience for most of these games and I was completely blind to most of the problematic stuff in games because I'm a straight white guy who never even considered this kind of thing. It took actually talking to other folks online and listening to them to understand why a lot of the stuff I just took for granted really bothered them.
So, has anyone been able to use the iOS app recently? I was attempting to find a license that wasn't taken and now it seems to be having issues with linked account info. I can't even get through the log-in screen.
How about we tie this back on topic and have discussion of the game itself? Once its come out and people have played it then we can have examples we can point to in the game to have discussion over how it treats women while remaining on topic.

The problem is the game has the three main characters, who get some motivation and characterization because they're the main characters, and the supporting cast, who gets... not much at all. Everyone's horrible, and the supporting cast is divided between humorous assholes and just assholes. No women as main characters and no women as humorous supporting cast members leaves them in a bad position. And the ones that are there are frequently just placed in situations involving sex.
They looked fairly identical to me, with the Xbox 360 version possibly having a slight edge in sharpness. That difference was harder to notice in motion, though.
As far as the colors/brightness concern, Beezel, that's apparently just a documented recording issue with the PS3. I've noticed that with most comparisons, too.

Yeah. PS3 games always look a bit darker in comparisons.

And honestly it's a far cry compared with the platform differences we've seen on previous R★ titles. Glad they finally figured out how to work their magic on the Cell.
I can't even begin to imagine what these guys will be able to accomplish on more powerful systems with more than 8x the RAM
Also I think the "lack of sharpness" was down to the washed out look that can plague some PS3 footage.
My PS3 has never, ever looked as washed out as many videos make it out to be. A bit of contrast and brightness correction can do wonders for perceived texture fidelity.

Tomb raider had some people lauding the strong writing for a female lead, whereas another group were decrying the threat of rape.

Nah, the car to beat in the game is the Voltic Coil, which is an analog of the Tesla Roadster. Love driving that car.

oddly the write ups i've seen so far say the 360 has better shading and shadows, but the ps3 has better long range textures and detail
