Whoa, it's the Xbox One thread! Remember the last one, and how you all soiled the bed like an naughty, incontinent dog? This is essentially your last shot at having an Xbox One thread for any appreciable amount of time, so take the time to go over...
The Rules Which You Better Read
This is not a thread to defend your favorite hardware maker, nor is it one to shit over other hardware makers. This forum tends to be better about fan-silliness, but a lot of you tend to get all hot and bothered if anyone besmirches the House of Plumber. Appropriate and sincere comparisons are fine, but we don't need any dramatics. This includes tired memes like "lolsony" and the dreaded "M$".
We're not going to tolerate people being shit with one another. Expect to be jailed if you go flying off the handle over DRM or something.
Yes, DRM talk is allowed.
As an addendum to the above, there is no guaranteed lifespan to this thread, and how long it lasts is inversely influenced by how bad behavior gets. We will not hesitate to take this thread away if people cannot act like adults.
Please cut down on the "witty" image macros. Chances are someone else has posted it (probably multiple people) and it doesn't add much to the discussion.
Report bad behavior. I am stunned at how giant spats can break out and not one of you goobers think to report it. Do not try to handle bad behavior on your own: let the mod team handle it.
Don't use general insults against groups to describe those who disagree with you as a method to get around the edict. People who like the One are not shills or idiots, and critic of the One are not virginal neckbeards. And general use of these terms will be treated as an edict infraction.
These rules are to be posted in every subsequent thread.
This thread is not permanent. You will definitely lose at some point after January 1st, 2014. While exceptions have been made for hardware that's been struggling and cannot maintain a lot of active threads on specific games. The XBox One is likely not going to have that problem, and you have proven that a long-term thread would be a nightmare anyways. So, don't get too comfortable.
I'm not even going to bother promising to make this OP more fancy. Feel free to PM me if you have a beautiful OP you want me to attach to this post.
And yes, calling it the Xbone still makes you a goober.
I'll jump in first. I'm getting an xbox at launch so that i can continue to play multiplayer games with my brothers who live across the country. They were both on board from the get go, and finally got me to come around. I'm genuinely exited now though. Especially for Titanfall.
Any thoughts on which game to get with the console? I was thinking BF4. Maybe Watch Dogs if the reviews are good.

I have my day one console due to arrive at launch via amazon. Getting killer instinct for sure, MAYBE Forza, and likely AssFlag, if I can be bothered to beat Asscreed 3 before launch day.
I will have to see more on Watchdogs before I commit.

I'll pass on the XB1 until I see and hear reliable things about it; them gutting the "integral hardware/software" 5 months before shipping does not fill me with optimism towards the reliability of the software, nor does there proposed method of stopping red ring from being an issue.

What do you mean? Last I knew, the Xbone was still shipping with the Kinect and whatnot, and the Kinect was never required hardware anyway, just PR idiots being idiots and saying stupid crap and later coming clean about it. Also, the red ring stuff from the 360 was due to some hilariously poor system design on the initial systems, not anything to do with software. Even if Microsoft up and removed the Kinect, peripheral hardware isn't going to matter to the console hardware itself in terms of quality.
I mean, clearly Microsoft is capable of making a massive screw-up like the red ring issues of the 360 (they did it once already, after all), but hopefully that's something they really have learned to avoid. Not saying waiting isn't prudent, just that I don't quite see what software changes and admission of peripheral devices as peripherals would really have to do with build quality.
Was totally planning on getting a One at launch, but sadly finances are not going to let me. So it'll be Feb before I can get one unless I get lucky and win one from the Dew/Doritos thing.
I'm not picking up an Xbox One on launch, and likely won't for some time but I AM really curious to see how well the voice control works. Kinect at present is pretty spotty, however they've been making big claims about the new version, if it worked WELL I'd use it much more.
As a related aside, I've an unemployed friend who recently took on a work at home job, I'm not sure what the company is called but she has to listen to short audio clips and transcribe what is said and make notes. These have nearly all started with "Xbox Bing" apparently, which she was confused about (not a gamer). She has to transcribe what was said and then in a notes field enter what else was heard in the background. I don't mean in a 'spying, listening to what you're doing' way. I mean, if there's someone hoovering in the background she'd have to write down:
Transcription: "Xbox Bing Penny Arcade"
Notes: "Hoover in the background".
The only thing I could think of was that they'd been contracted to help improve the voice recognition.
Since finances allow for only one, I'm going with the PS4
I am curious if MS will be able to kick up any exclusives that get me to take notice - nearly all the games I played on 360 (and I did play a great deal of 360 games) were multiplatform, but that's where you played your multiplats, because more than nine times out of ten that's where you had better visuals and performance
With comparable specs but leaning slightly in favor of the PS4, I don't really have that fear for this gen (nor do I think the One's performance will cause anything nearly as shoddy as some PS3 ports we got this past gen), so it's going to have to have exclusives to grab me. As far as I last heard, PS4 pre-orders were outselling the One two to one (was there ever a reliable source for this, outside of the hilariously-unreliable VGChartz?), but even so that's still a huge One market, and in a time where third-party exclusives are all but instinct, I'd have to imagine that this gen would have a similar feel to the PS2/Xbox era, with the PS4 taking the role of the Xbox and the One of the PS2 - make a good base game for the less-capable One (PS2), and then the PS4 (OXbox) version is a little bit prettier
But because I would expect that to be the case, it's all gonna come down to exclusives for One. Right now, I'm not really seeing it. Dead Rising 3 had MS actually helping Capcom develop, right? So that one's pretty much a guarantee to stay on the One? DR3 looks pretty interesting to me. Fantasia looks really great in concept and I love Harmonix to death, but I'm still wary of Kinect stuff.
Titanfall seems like it could be neat but it's pretty much guaranteed that a PS4 version is coming at this point, just a question of when.
Peggle 2 seems like the most compelling launch game, and that is not at all an insult. I have high hopes for Peggle 2, and I wonder how long that will stay exclusive.
I have to ask: Have they shown off anything about Dead Rising 3 that actually makes it, you know, Dead Rising. Because the initial E3 reveal was a totally different generic brown zombie game with that name patched onto it and I haven't followed it since then.

Since then they've showed off the crazy outfits and psychos. It seems they want let people play it as a straight zombie open world game if they want, but the crazy stuff will still be in there if that's what your in to.
Dead Rising 3 is looking much better in recent demos. The PAX one seemed like a lot of fun. I just hope they can improve the framerate by release. It's a little choppy still. But thank you, Capcom, for removing the timer. I never liked dealing with it.
As far as hardware reliability, the Xbox 360 debacle cost them a lot of money. I'm sure they don't want a repeat. That's why the box is so large. There's a lot of empty space designed just for cooling.

AFAIK in Normal mode there's no timer and you can save anywhere. They also have a Hardcore mode that has a timer and only lets you save at certain spots for the folks who want the 'classic' DR experience.

Ever since that settled that issue with the disc stuff, I'll probably be getting a X1 first. Get a PS4 later.
Either way, I'm not in a hurry to buy either since most of the stuff I want for them doesn't start coming out until March of next year.

Yeah that's probably the best thing they could have done to appease literally everyone. When I get an X1 I'll be getting this game with it. I owned DR2 on the PC but it just didn't feel the same. The game was really meant to be played on a console.
There's an Xbox One sitting in my living room (my roommate got it through some indie app dev program MS has.)
Ask me questions.
How loud is it when playing and not playing games, as well as compared to the Xbox 360?
I haven't gotten a chance to game on it much, but when at the home screen or watching TV I'd compare it to a laptop. I can hear it spin up when it boots, and here it wind down when it turns off, but in between you really don't notice it.
I should point out that we haven't tried it with any optical media; I have no idea how loud the drive is.
It's several of orders of magnitude quieter than my 360. I have a 2008 360 that literally sounds like the guy in the apartment above is vaccuming, so...
How's the voice recognition through Kinect and/or the gesture controls for navigating around the UI?
Voice command is quite good and getting better. They're pushing patches daily and the voice command interface has gotten significantly better.
I haven't messed with gestures much because I can do everything I really need to with voice command.
What's the boot up time like (my 360 is pathetically slow)?
I honestly don't know. Right now it's updating literally every time it's turned on so I don't know what it looks like when it doesn't have to go through those hoops.
How's the new 41-change-wonder-pad?
It's the most comfortable controller I've ever held. The D-Pad is leaps and bounds better than the 360s, which is admittedly not a high bar to clear.
Is it actually as large as it looks in the videos and how heavy is the thing?
The console? It's about the size of my cable box - maybe an inch smaller in each dimension. I haven't picked it up so I don't know the weight.
How responsive is the interface?
Very snappy. There's some optimization yet to be done on the apps themselves but navigating between them is very fluid.
Anyone know if this could be use as a media server to stream to other devices? I know they are really hoping to be the center of the media universe and I would definitely consider one if I could use it as a main hub (I don't have a central HTPC).
I dunno, I think I'm going to sit out a 360/PS4 upgrade for a while -- so far I'm not really seeing anything done with the extra power that's impressive enough to shell out for a new system, plus the launch lineup is uninspiring. I mean, there doesn't seem to be any duds, but there doesn't seem to be anything truly awesome, either. It's just the same stuff we've already been getting for the last four years, plus it'll all be available on the 360/PS3.
So far the somewhat more interesting first-party stuff has me leaning Sony, but maybe in the next year Microsoft will actually do something interesting with Kinect and convince me.
Other notes on voice command: it worked flawlessly with my American Standard Vernacular, my roommates' Mississippi drawl, and my best Sean Connery and Micheal Caine impression (both of which, let's be clear, are absolutely terrible), so I don't think accents will really be a problem this time around.

Honestly, I usually wouldn't even be considering an upgrade until Fall of next year.
But Titanfall looks pretty awesome and I loved MW2 to bits. Not to mention I'll probably make a decent amount of money this Christmas so its no big deal.
I'll admit, a significant factor in my decision to go Xbox One over PS4 is the controller. The 360 controller, D-pad aside, is my favorite controller ever, and I've always found PlayStation controllers to be uncomfortable. I much prefer the asymmetric sticks and the triggers.
I watched a couple of videos recently about Ryse. Specifically about the revamped combat. It still looks to be a bit too qte based for my taste, and the fact that there is no fail state for the executions is a bummer. The developer made it sound like they didn't want to make the game too hard, but I wouldn't mind being able to choose there. The Colosseum multiplayer looked neat, and the game is gorgeous.
Every video of Ryse I've seen has been weird, as the game is flat out gorgeous but the animations all seem ... kind of janky is the best way I can but it. There's no flow, it just kind of jerks from one to the next one.
@Salvation122 Have you or your roommate had a chance to test out the recognition when picking up a controller? In other words, does it actually turn on and do <things> based on who picked it up?
So last I heard was that the Kinect isn't necessary anymore. This means I can buy an Xbox, leave the Kinect in the box it came in and play all the games, minus whatever Kinect did for that game and whatever voice and gesture control stuff for the UI, right?
If that's true, maybe I'll get one, since all my friends are dead set against PS4. I would still prefer a Kinect less version. That may change if I see anything that actually interests me with motion controls. Not bagging on it, it's just never been interesting to me at all.
Speaking of which, have there been any new announcements of stuff you can do with Kinect? There was a big to-do about scanning your face into Yet Another Kinect Sports, but that's about all I've heard.

Might want to hold out for a kinect-less package. Might be able to save yourself $100.

I got to play some of the new Forza. Its Forza, but prettier. If you like Forza, its awesome. If you dont... it probably wont change your mind.
Ryse is looking a lot better now that Ive seen more gameplay that isnt a bunch of quicktime events. The multiplayer should be fun too.
Dead Rising had me sold as soon as I saw the vehicle combining. Motorcycle with steamroller front that has flamethrowers on it. SOLD.
but the big one for me was getting to check out Titanfall. Holy CRAP. I am sold like hell on this game, no question.
