to be fair i don't think there ever was a time when the Xbone didn't function unless that Kinect was hooked up and MS just backed away from that claim because they knew they'd be caught out eventually.
i'll agree that it'll be interesting to see how it works for that that choose not to hook up the Kinect and if MS reveal numbers for how many people don't*.
*i'm sure they'll be able to tell as long as the console is online at some point.

I just won an Xbox One and Forza 5 through the Mt. Dew/doritos promotion. (0 dollars spent on dew or Doritos)...
I'm terribly excited, although they warn a 12-14 week shipping period... Hopefully mine wont be as long as it was only the 3rd night of auctions!
Congrats, did you just do a sweepstakes entry and get lucky? That's about one of the only legit ways to get one now. This isn't verified or anything, but I heard on the interwebs that there are people bragging about getting thousands and thousands of points via friends that work for Pepsico and are pretty much just tying up the auctions for themselves because they can outbid anybody. Then when they win they just gift their leftover points to the next friend and keep the cycle going.

Yeah seriously that reminds me of when it came out that the only people who won the initial mcdonalds monapoly contests were friends of McD's corporate people.
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

Can you do it with out a live subscription?
some of it, yeah.
You can play games (but not multiplayer), you can watch videos off of your DLNA/Microsoftian approved devices, you can snap internet explorer in and do web stuff...
but you won't be able to do netflix, hulu, online multiplayer, or use your cable box with the integrated live guide.
Honestly, paying for live has won. There is zero chance of them going free with it, and if you want the full experience of the system you need to factor it into the cost, just like you will on the PS4 if you want to play any games online, or use any other features that may end up behind the paywall over time.
If you play it right, you can find 12+1 month xblg cards on amazon for 40 bucks.

It is hard to imagine owning an xbox one without a gold subscription. I know some people do, but yeah.
Yeah not to be an elitest, but it always confuses me when people don't have gold. Like how do you do that? I mean I primarily play the xbox 360 for its multiplayer community and community services to be honest.
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.
The Kinect, feature wise, is capable of a lot more than the PS4's Eye Thing.
The PS4's Eye Thing is a more accurate and precise method of control for video games, but with a far narrower scope for use.
I don't think the Eye needs to 'catch up' with the Kinect, because frankly it exceeds it in the arena it is designed to operate in. But it does less. It's your choice as a consumer to decide which is better suited to your needs.
I'll be honest I've had gold for so long I forget there is even a charge for the service.

Eh. I haven't had gold for a while, and while I get a decent amount of use out of my 360, I barely ever took it online when I did have gold. The only reason I ever have it connected anymore is if I want to buy something on the store. Some people play more single player and local multiplayer than online multi.

I haven't had Gold in probably 2 years. Just stopped being worth it for the on or two nights a year I play a game multiplayer. And since I have about 15 other devices in my home that play Netflix that made the decision even easier.
On the other hand Playstation Plus was a no-brainer to me since the earlier you subscribe, the larger library you accumulate. Seemed silly not to jump in for 40 bucks a year and just constantly have new stuff to play every single week. I think I"m subbed through 2015 at this point via various deals and loopholes.

Why spread the FUD? None of that stuff is behind the paywall and they've not indicated it will be, so why say it? It's like someone suggesting that once MS have you locked in to Gold they're going to ramp the price up to $20 a month. It's baseless bullshit. You don't have to make shit up to make you feel better you have to pay for it on the XB1.

I wasn't saying already established features are falling behind the paywall, and if it read like that I am sorry.
I am saying that Sony will likely create further value-added features to incentivize PS+.
As it stands, PS+ used to only be free games, beta access, and exclusive content. Now it is also their enhanced online multiplayer. They will probably come up with other carrots to increase / incentivize it.

Preface : I will now be buying an Xbox One almost certainly. This is not a hate train post.
Far as I'm concerned, the voice commands are a selling point for the software written to support them, not for the Kinect. I really really don't like the fact that, so far, the only truly impressive stuff demo'd for the Kinect is the voice controls, which could be done with any decent microphone and should not require a $100 piece of hardware mandatory included.
Sure, maybe, maybe not. No one knows though anymore than they know what other dickish things MS may or may not do in the future.
I haven't had Gold on my 360 for going on five years. It used to be that you could send messages on Silver, now you need Gold even to do that.
I refuse to pay MS money for basic functionality. If I want to play MP I use my PC, I don't care for MP on consoles but the other stuff I might. But I'm simply not going to pay for it when my TV and a myriad of other devices already have Skype and Netflix, and iplayer, etc for free.

the only reason the voice controls work as well as they do is because they have an array of decent microphones in it, that corroborates with visual data from the cameras to determine which individual in the room said what.
That's how two guys can say "xbox show my stuff" and have it know who said it, and load the appropriate profile information.
So, in truth, it DOES need the cameras and complex skeletal/spatial processing to do what it is doing on the broad scale.
Also, Killer Instinct knows who you are, so when someone hands you a controller during a party session, the buttons automatically map to your preferences.
Also, the iR on the back of the controller interfaces with the Kinect so they know exactly what controller you are holding. In a split screen game, you will always be given the appropriate portion / corner of the screen based on where you are in the room, not by controller number.
It's all the little things.

There is a lot more going on with Kinect than just simple voice commands, even if it may seem that way on the surface. I think the Kinect itself even does the processing for the voice but I may be wrong on that.

Choice, the word you are looking for there is choice.
Outstanding, myself and the thread thank you. I'll make sure you're on standby every other time I'm posting on my phone whilst walking through a train station.
As someone who hasn't been interested in the XBone really since it was announced, that OS video was pretty amazing. I am curious about something though. How does the console differentiate the uses of you saying "XBox"? Like, how does it understand when you're saying "XBox, show my stuff" and does so, versus when you're explaining "If I just say 'XBox, show my stuff', then it'll come up" and it doesn't?
it won't. I had to stop saying xbox in casual conversations with the OG kinect on. it would randomly pick up on what I was saying and try to perform some task I didn't ask of it. I started saying 'the console' instead of xbox all the time.
I'll be honest I've had gold for so long I forget there is even a charge for the service.

yeah... I'm wondering if breaking street date by taking the console online would get him banned.
it needs the day one patch before it can do anything so unless MS have that set up and ready to go, hooking it up isn't going to do much of any good.
if MS do have the day one path live, then they can hardly blame people for taking advantage of that. its not like he broke into the warehouse to get, Target set it to him. if MS want to be pissed at anyone, it should be at any retailers that jump the launch/ship date.

I'm not sure where your info is from. PS+ gives an insane amount of games. There are a minimum of one new game each week. This month there will be 7 free games. Since E3 there have been 31 free games made available through PS+.

It's honestly one of the reasons I'm waiting on an Xbox One. After nearly 10 years as a subscriber, I just kind of gave up on Live. Most of the services they offer behind their paywall are free on most other platforms without any price beyond the standard subscription fee, and that includes the PS4. Other than online gaming, there's little to no advantage for me personally with regards to paying for their service other than online gaming, which I haven't done through the Xbox in an aaaaage. And since I stilll don't have the inclination to resubscribe since none of the games I would want prior to Titanfall have any online functionality I care about, it kinda leaves the rest of the system feeling like a big black brick. They've really really sucked at incentivizing the service, and simply locked more simple services behind the paywall in an effort to make it look more valuable than it is.
Aaaand that guy is about to have the first bricked Xbox One, MS has taken down his video and is now probably going to drop the banhammer on his entire account.
yeah, he tweeted that the video had been taken down, hopefully that's as far as MS go cause it would be an insanely stupid thing to punish this guy just because a retailer fucked up.
especially when everything he's tweeted seems to be fairly positive.
