That is very anecdotal evidence there to make a sweeping generalization about the industry.
Im not basing it entirely off of his anecdotal evidence though; its a phenomenon that happens in all sorts of environments with "sticky" services.
People despise origin for all sorts of reasons, but one of them is that it keeps games out of Steam, where people have friends lists and community already established.
Most people who own an iPhone are unlikely to switch to android, because they have already made an investment in the software and services that do not carry over to the new platform. Same goes in the other direction, to an extent.
Consoles historically have had no such stickiness outside of backwards compatibility, which is mostly nonexistent this generation. But XBL has been an immensely popular online service which made playing games with friends fairly easy. For the people who play Call of Duty, Battlefield, and othersuch titles, I do wonder how these highly active friends lists are going to go moving forward; will people be discussing amongst themselves what they are buying, what their new PSN/gamertag is going to be, etc... or will they got the path of least resistance and stay with what has been working thus far?

The new features seem promising. I like the idea of partially flooding areas and knocking down buildings, but I'm not buying it, just not my thing. Good luck overcoming people's investment with the COD series tho. Reviews seem to indicate the single player, (I know, haha, single player etc) is particularly pointless/bland. There's something kind of interesting in how CoD really pimps their single player story in ads despite the fact that it's probably the least played part of the game.
My previous comment was totally anecdotal, that's why I mentioned I was sure the inverse brand thing exists and asked if others had the same experience. Imagine if one of them made a web service that you slotted in your credentials and it went out and scraped your friends list and tried to recreate it on the opposing service. That would be some good entertainment.
So, Battlefield 4. Does this version stand a chance against Call of Duty? It's getting better reviews than the last one, at least.
The safe bet until something changes is no, nothing stands a chance against CoD. BF4's next gen multiplayer not being crippled (afaik?) might help, but I wouldn't bet on CoD taking a fall yet. Doubly so where I imagine the vast majority of the copies will be purchased on current gen systems.
That is very anecdotal evidence there to make a sweeping generalization about the industry.
I agree but I would love to see a real indepth survey about backlogs, the length of the games in those backlogs, and the average gaming time available to gamers. Just take a very recent example like Assassin's Creed 4. All early press releases said 80 hours of content. A recent survey in the UK (the first one I could find on google) said that the average gamer plays 2.5 hours a day, 5 days a week. That means that it would take the average gamer between 6 - 7 weeks just to play through that one game.
Even if that person buys one game a month, they can't play them all the way through if they buy any of the more recent big budget titles, and forget about it if they also play multiplayer stuff like WoW or COD. The combination of the sheer number of AAA titles each year, the "bigger is better" mentality of those games, and the limited time in a month does mean eventually the audience as a whole is going to be backlogged.
I'm lucky some weeks to get to even see my computer...my backlog definitely pushes me away from another console right now.

I had a 360 backlog when I picked up my PS3.
For a certain subset of gamers, especially the ones who buy 10-12+ games a year (not counting steam sales and other orgasmic collection events like PSN/XBL seasonal sales), the backlogs don't really matter. There is no fucking way I will have chewed through my backlog before I get my xbox one; it just means for a while I will have both systems hooked up to the TV until I finish them (or stop caring, which is more likely).

Really, the biggest question is going to be: Will there be a casual friendly Kinect 2 game or feature that captures some exciting news coverage and drives it as a "must have" during the holiday season?
Seriously, if Microsoft had planned ahead and had some sort of My Little Pony Furby Edition tie-in with the Kinect that let kids play Skylanders or something, they would have had this on lock.
They are doing a completely free Kinect Sports "Pre Season" title which starts with the Jet Ski game... supposedly one of the more fun and engaging minigames on the game that was delayed (and probably the one that was the least buggy / needed the least amount of work).
And there is a tiny bit of Kinect stuff happening in a lot of the launch titles... Forza has the head tracking, Killer Instinct knows who is grabbing the controller and auto-swtches to the button layout they prefer so switching between a bunch of people in the room isn't a hassle, etc.
And at least in America, the kinect integration with the media services like Netflix, Hulu, Live TV, etc will be a neat feature.
None of that except the Jet Ski game is casual friendly, though. Forza is about as niche as it gets, and Killer Instinct is a violent fighting game.
You need something that 8-16 year olds are begging Santa for, and that mom and dad want to play with grandma.
I mean, that's not the only way to do it, but I think that having a Kinect-based, kid-targeted Disney branded game or something would just do wonders for moving boxes in the holiday season, which is when the dominant position will be established.
Anyone refuse to play new games before working through older purchases? I have a friend who does that, it kills me, I can't talk about anything with him because i'll spoil the hell out of him.

That logic works really well for a 200-250 dollar box (like the Wii), but I don't think going after the 8 year olds is something either Sony or Microsoft is really trying to do here with their 400-500 dollar entertainment center devices.
The average gamer is around 30 years old and has disposable income.

I certainly don't refuse to play new games or buy new games because of my backlog (my Steam account proves this). However, it definitely dissuades me from looking at the PS4 and XBoxOne right now. I wouldn't say "I'll buy one once I finish my Steam library" - however I would say "I'll buy one when I feel like I really want something new".

I think most people don't think in terms of "backlog."
I never finished Skyrim. Skyrim isn't in my backlog. I played it till I was done with it, and now it's gone. Did I only get like 14 hours of play out of it? Yes, which is not the maximum. But there's not 75 hours of "backlog" waiting to be picked up.
Similarly, all the COD single player games I've never played aren't in my "backlog." I played the multi while it entertained me, then I was done with it.
I'd predict that BF4 will do pretty well on the next generation systems (and PC), but the install bases just won't be there for it to be a huge title compared to what CoD will sell on the existing platforms.
So, Battlefield 4. Does this version stand a chance against Call of Duty? It's getting better reviews than the last one, at least.
On one hand those two games are competing for a slice of the shooter pie because they're both tacticool military super bro shooters, but on the other hand they require such different temperments and play styles that they're not competing directly against each other. Personally, I'm somewhat worried by Harrison's statement that...
"We want to broaden the concept of gaming to maybe blur the distinctions about what is a traditional game and what is a traditional television programme and what is traditional linear media.
It's one thing to have an all-in-one media box and another thing entirely to want all media to be basically the same.
Though viewed in that light, I guess it makes sense to hire a TV guy who's really into comics.

Apparently today is full of glorious randomness, as Sega just showed that their "four pillars" strategy won't keep them from releasing quirky smaller games:
Sega has sprung a surprise release of The Typing of the Dead: Overkill on Steam. Available half-off for $10 through November 1, the game fuses the House of the Dead series with a typing tutor. A typing tutor that teaches you that if you don't learn to write 60 WPM you're going to be zombie chow.
This typing tutor also comes with a "full and faithful port" of the original PS3 edition of House of the Dead. There are also plans to add a two-player co-op multiplayer "shortly after launch as free DLC." The game will go up to its regular price of $20 after Halloween.

Am I misremembering, or isn't Angry Birds 3DS like the best-selling third party game on the 3DS?

I guess it's possible there is a demographic out there that owns a console or handheld and DOESN'T have a Tablet/Touch device already that would shell out $40-$50 for a game that is $0.99 but I'll be damned if I can find it. :P

looks like there might be some competition on the golf game front in the near future. while EA might be done with Tiger Woods, it seems he's not out of the gaming market just yet.
Woods' agent Mark Steinberg told ESPN that he is currently speaking with another, unspecified game company regarding the golfer's video game rights. EA Sports said yesterday that its partnership with the PGA Tour "remains strong," noting EA is the "exclusive" developer of PGA Tour games.
be interesting to see what this eventually means for golf fans.

well if you look at this quote I'm pretty sure it already was:
"Your feedback from the alpha trial is clear: We are not making the game you want to play," the post says. "That is why, after much difficult deliberation, we have decided to cease production of this version of the game. Although we deeply respect the great work done by our talented team, ultimately it's about getting you the game you expect and deserve."

Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
They probably need to tone it up so they can reclaim the title of most swearingest game.
I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but as I understand it it is all based on the PS3 version of the game which bleeps the swears but offers a mechanic by which you can unbleep it by shooting the bleeped subtitles. However, I'm not sure if this will all carry over (or how it'd work) in the typing-based core of the game.

I think so. Can't blame 'em for going after the existing market.
That is seriously some of the most amazing news ever. I wonder if they're toning down the swearing though.

"Your feedback from the alpha trial is clear: We are not making the game you want to play," the post says. "That is why, after much difficult deliberation, we have decided to cease production of this version of the game. Although we deeply respect the great work done by our talented team, ultimately it's about getting you the game you expect and deserve."
as I said, yiiiiiiiiikes
xbox and ps4 will be the xmas gift this year, in addition to whatever else. Flat out.
You are treading dangerous waters with your generalizations. The average gamer doesnt own a console, and is rapidly becoming middle aged women in the "casual" demo. They are playing farmville/angry birds/candy crush/bejeweled.
As an aside, the last wow expansion I went to get, the people in line at walmart were 90% middleage or plus women. Buying the game for themselves ( I judge by small talk vernacular being on point). Really surprised me.
A thread on NeoGAF said that 2K registed 2kgolflinks.com . Maybe that's the one.

Mario and Bowser better keep an eye on Peach then!
Huh. What sports games does 2K do anymore now that football's not an option for them?
Basketball, Baseball, Wrestling... and probably a lot more.
