The Awesomesauce Hour

ShintoShinto __BANNED USERS regular
edited April 2007 in Debate and/or Discourse
In this thread we share playlists.

Rule 1: All music must be purchasable on iTunes
Rule 2: Playlists must not be more than an hour, give or take

Example (Making an hour of music with only one Bob Dylan song is a major achievement for me)

1. Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes
2. Tonight, Tonight - Smashing Pumpkins
3. Girl (Octet Remix) - Beck
4. Axis: Bold as Love - Joan Osborne
5. Grendel's Mother - The Mountain Goats
6. One - Johnny Cash
7. Dink's Song - Bob Dylan
8. Grey Room - Damien Rice
9. Asleep and Dreaming - The Magnetic Fields
10. Sons & Daughters - The Decemberists
11. Free to Run - Gomez
12. Daughter - Pearl Jam
13. No More Kings - Pavement
14. Cold Cold Ground - Tom Waits

    1. Keep the Car Running - The Arcade Fire
    2. The Night that Minnie Timperley Died - Pulp
    3. The Death of Ferdinand de Saussure - The Magnetic Fields
    4. Kinky Afro - Happy Mondays
    5. I Walk on Gilded Splinters - Paul Weller
    6. She'll Drive the Big Car - David Bowie
    7. St. Francis Dam Disaster - Frank Black and the Catholics
    8. First Night - The Hold Steady
    9. Secret Making - The National
    10. Star Witness - Neko Case
    11. Bigmouth Strikes Again - The Smiths
    12. Move On Up - Curtis Mayfield*
    13. Young Americans - David Bowie
    14. Chicago - Sufjan Stevens

*The only version on iTunes is a 9-minute one, so that pushes it a few minutes over the hour mark.

Lemme top you. My 284-song If-I-Had-An-iPod list has nine artists with 3 or more appearances:

    Kelly Clarkson- 6 songs
    Avril Lavigne- 5
    Fantasy Twins- 4
    Hoobastank- 4
    All-American Rejects- 3
    Beach Boys- 3
    Kim Wilde- 3
    Nickelback- 3
    Paul Oakenfold- 3

I don't keep track of song lengths, so I can't know for sure that I will get an hour, but 14, 15 songs seems to be about what it would take, so I'll go with that and get back to you...

Fog. (Again) [Live] is such a perfect song to end a mix with! I was going to work my way backwards. Dammit.

Lemme top you. My 290-song If-I-Had-An-iPod list has nine artists with 3 or more appearances:

    Kelly Clarkson- 6 songs
    Avril Lavigne- 5
    Fantasy Twins- 4
    Hoobastank- 4
    All-American Rejects- 3
    Beach Boys- 3
    Kim Wilde- 3
    Nickelback- 3
    Paul Oakenfold- 3

Absolutely nothing wrong with three Rejects songs. I have both albums. Mom actually bought the first one before "Swing, Swing" got popular.
My skating playlist? About 10 out of 25 songs are by blink182. Another 5 are Green Day.

Yeah, Rejects is fine, and Oakenfold and Clarkson and beach Boys, but then look at the other five. Avril Lavigne is in second place, I got Hoobastank and Nickelback, a house band nobody's ever heard of and I haven't heard anyone but me give Wilde anything but a hard time.

EDIT: Okay, my list, on the simplistic 15-songs-makes-one-hour model:

    1- Walk Away, The Nadas
    2- Mr. Brightside, The Killers
    3- Ameno, Era
4- Behind These Hazel Eyes, Kelly Clarkson
5- Only If I, Kate Ryan
6- Dirty Little Secret, All-American Rejects
7- Emerald Sword, Rhapsody of Fire
    8- Everytime We Touch, Cascada
9- Say It Right, Nelly Furtado
    10- Fever, Fantasy Twins
    11- Unwritten, Natasha Bedingfield
    12- Same Direction, Hoobastank
    13- Ocean Avenue, Yellowcard
14- You Keep Me Hangin' On, Kim Wilde
15- Jerk It Out, The Caesars

I've got a problem with plenty of your tracks. I only redded the two I deemed to be most blatant. (That, and I don't share your genre, so I wouldn't know on the rest of them.)

Dude, you've got Kelly Clarkson, All-American Rejects, Nelly Furtado, Hoobastank and the worst The Killers song ever on your list, it's a fucking cesspool of shitty music. Plus you've got Avril Lavigne and Nickelback in the wings apparently. You don't get to talk about "problems" you have with his choices.

I was asking about the soundtrack, which is genius, but I also think the movie is genius. Not many people seem to agree.

Why would you expect to not like Cake?

Also, is it okay if I link the my playlist?

    I agree on both counts.

But I don't like Cake, at all.

I'd think it's fine to like the playlist. I didn't expect Cake to have any real depth or musicality because they're kind of seen as a "joke" band. I thought they were pretty good though.

I thought the movie was okay, but not as smart as it thought it was. It struck me as a little self-conscious and I felt like it was desperately trying to be a Kaufman and Anderson vehicle, but not quite capturing the vital parts of either.

I only recognized one band in your playlist, but it sounded like metal and gothic/ industrial stuff. Probably not a great match to Cake.

I used to like Cake, but having them played at work nearly every day for a month really killed my ability to enjoy listening to them.

My playlist was pretty much a mix of black metal and hardcore. Nothing "gothic" about it, thankfully.
