If you're cloning the disk for a hardware RAID controlled you'll want to do a 1:1 dd copy of it but it's also probably a bad idea to mess around with it since to do it safely you need to take the server offline for the duration. Since RAID is all about availability it might not be an option.

Also: answered my iptables question: conntrack has the DNAT match option for exactly this situation, which solves all my problems.

I've got a decently working proxy server with web filtering set up in a Linux virtual machine. There is an authentication option for the filter so I can track who is accessing what, only problem is Kerberos being a complete pain in the ass to work with. I've gone through 5 different 'net ads join' errors and this last one I found has very few search results on what the fix is.

I'm sure they're a fun company. But I need to be able to afford to live off retirement when I'm 65 (or 75)+, not have fun all day erry day.

They probably make enough money to afford a good system admin though, I bet, for years.

We are quite literally looking for a person that can do four jobs: Web Development, Software Development, Sys Admin, and the (dreaded) GENERAL IT for us here that need help configuring a firewall for a dev kit, etc. Sorry, I know that’s the WORST, but it’s absolutely part of the gig.

    - Strong experience in PHP, MySQL, Javascript (jQuery and AJAX), CSS, Apache
    - Strong experience in one of Java, Python, Ruby, or other object-oriented language
    - A history of running and configuring multiple-server environments, including load balancers, web accelerators/caching systems, and databases
    - A history of running and configuring multiple server environments, load balancers, and varnish

That is a pretty brutal job description too. They're looking for someone who can do every part of 4 jobs and pay them a modest salary for one job.

At least they're being up front, but it's a crazy amount of qualifications they're looking for in one person. They're right, though, that they're going to get a tidal wave of applicants.

Look, I love PA, but my bills come to my house, not Gabe and Tycho's.
Also I don't live in Washington and I don't do web dev or I'd apply so hard.

I'd apply but I might be tempted to cause bodily harm to Mike on a daily basis. I'm sure I'd get along fine with Jerry and Khoo though. (And I live on the east coast and have no intention of moving anytime soon.)

Not sure why they'd need a strong experience in Java/Ruby though.

Are they expecting to build in house tools? If so they're looking for a renaissance man with 4 different skillsets and paying $50k for them.

I somehow think my 50k is.. uh... somewhat high. I've seen job postings like those before, they usually pay $32k without benefits.

cost of living in Seattle is different from where you live?

Where I live is probably more expensive.

$180 electric bill (averaged through summer/winter months)
$1000 rent for 2-3 bedroom apartment
    $400 food (2 people)
    $300 gas
    $120 car+renters insurance

I know for a fact my electric bill is nearly triple theirs.

We had 11% sales tax at one point.

    Then there's state income tax.

My net pay is roughly 25% of my gross pay thanks to NYS.

I'm mostly saying that these jobs go unfilled. PA specifically can get away with it because they're PA.

Unfortunately the salary will determine what kind of candidate they attract in general and hire. So if they offer less than 50k, they're going to get pretty unstellar people in general.

Someone tried selling a (literal) former broom closet (10ft × 8ft) as a furnished flat in Central London a few years before the crash. Asking price ≈ £100k.

Honestly, if I weren't only half qualified for a couple of the facets, and fully unqualified for the web dev part, I'd totally apply. It would basically be my dream job, and my wife once she finishes grad school next semester will be an APRN so the pay wouldn't be that big of an issue. And they're not going to be such complete assholes that they won't pay you something you can't do ok on. It just won't be in and off itself worth the 4 roles and hours.

It wouldn't be a bad little feather in the cap style job you could do for a few years then move onto something better, but if you can land it, you can definitely do better. The job ad screams "we need someone who undervalues themselves and is onboard with the PA cult of personality". It's one thing to say you're not motivated by money, but well, cool work swag doesn't pay the mortgage. I'm sure a zillion people will apply. My co-worker had a job interview for a similar position at ... the guys who make Warframe? Digital Extremes! He was told the position was pretty poor because the developers meant everything and the IT guy would be underpaid and underappreciated. Fortunately, he didn't give two shits about working in the games industry and got a job with a big local law firm before coming over to the current job, a mental health agency.

edit: there's a video on the site somewhere of a previous hire and all the staff chatter that goes on regarding the hire. There's a whole lot of touchy feely involved if I remember it right.

The problem is Khoo is a businessman. He knows exactly what someone like this is worth. Someone with those skills and can do them all? Easily worth 200,000 a year.

They want some fresh faced babby that's going to accept their 30k salary with no benefits, and 2 hours a day (of your 15 hour day -- oh wait you're on call, lol 24 hours a day) of free roam to the ping pong table, for doing all those.

Anyone who doesn't take an hourly salary for that job is crazy. Mostly because on call counts as hours worked for most states.

Khoo, again, being a businessman, doesn't want to pay money for people. Because that means the bonuses him, Mike, and Jerry take home are that much bigger. I mean if a worker takes in .75% of your profits, that's pretty serious bro.

In better news, I had a second interview for a pretty sweet gig yesterday that I'm quite hoping pans out. I feel pretty good about it, everything they need is right in my wheelhouse, outside of knowing cisco switches, and that was more of an "is a plus" requirement anyway.

They're supposed to be contacting with news either way sometime late next week. I'd be the only sys admin at that particular site, with a dedicated pc tech and small helpdesk staff to filter out the garbage for me.
