It appears as though I’m going to be in Boise for a few days in early October. I’m there for a work function but flight schedules require me to be there over 3 days for a one-day event. So, I’ve got a couple of nights I need to occupy. I’m staying in west downtown.
What is there to do around there? Is there an awesome restaurant I need to try? Is that a terrible wasteland and I need to rent a car to go find something to do at all? I don’t have any guidance as to what’s around there, so any advice is appreciated.

For what I know, renting a car is probably in your best interest because I hear the public transportation system isn't that great.
I regret nothing.

I received some good advice via PM saying that in Downtown I won't need to rent a car and can just wander. That is what I was hoping to hear.
Kinda at a bad time of year, too early for Bogus Basin (skiing) and too late for any summer events.

the boise weekly usually has a pretty good listing of whats going on in town. you can pick them up free just about anywhere, or http://www.boiseweekly.com/
Most of the restaurants downtown are pretty awesome, IMO. Bardenay, Angells, Lucky Fins, and if you like pizza, Flying Pie is pretty much a must.
For Food and Beverage: Pretty much all of the restaurants downtown are good, though on a weekend it would be wise to make a reservation. Mai Tai makes pretty good asian cuisine, and Shige's does some pretty good sushi. If steak is more your thing, then Chandler's provides an excellent (though high priced) meal. The Front Door (which I think is below the Reef), makes a fine pizza, and has an excellent bar as well. For drinking there are a ton of little bars around. If tequila is your thing, then I wouldn't miss the Matador. There are two arcade bars in town (if that is your thing), Space Bar is downtown, which is supposed to be cool. Then there is Grinkers in Eagle (about 10 miles out) which has a better game selection. Grinkers has a limited beer selection, but all of the games are 25 cents a play.
For entertainment: Like any decent sized town, there are a million little clubs downtown for every music taste, and they usually have live music going. The neurolux, the balcony, the reef, shorties, the list goes on and on. As mentioned before, Boise Weekly is an excellent resource for who is going to be playing where. If you're a little more high brow, then the morrison center (the big venue in town) often has shows going (musicals, symphony, etc). If you're into live theatre, then Boise Contemporary Theatre is a little black box that does some really good modern shows.
There really is something for every interest, though maybe not downtown. If you have some specific ideas or questions, feel free to ask.
I'm there Tuesday night through Thursday morning, so I will have two nights to kill. It sounds like Downtown is walkable, which was my hope. I'll just cab it from the airport and call it good.
It looks like I'll be all alone Tuesday night, and I don't get in until around 11:00. Anyone have any bright ideas as to where I could grab a late night meal on a weeknight?
I almost hate to recommend it, but the Pie Hole (a pizza joint) is open until like 3am...
but that's pretty much drunk at midnight shame food... so... YMMV.
I think the Matador has late hours too, but the menu is limited.
I'm not downtown super late looking to eat a lot of the time, so I may have to defer to others.
I suppose I ought to ask if I'm going to get murdered walking on Main in the wee hours of the morning.
Given that I get in late night on Tuesday, and my Thursday flight takes off at 5:30 AM, I don't think I'll get to enjoy the best of Boise, but its nice to know I have options all around me if I can get away from work for a little R&R.
It's Boise...
Now, if you find yourself in Garden City, I would be a little more concerned.
The main part of downtown was kinda neat but still was pretty dead when I got there around 7. I had a very early flight, though, so that may have been a good thing.
That Boise State stadium is at a beautiful location, with an awesome mountain view, but good God that is an ugly field.
