Shadows is a fun game and it was an entertaining session, but they shouldn't have played with a traitor. The game is difficult enough to win when everyone is loyal, especially if people are new to start; there are play styles that work in this game and play styles that really don't, like splitting everyone up to go on separate quests, and you need some experience with the game to know which is which. That's why even the game manual explicitly recommends playing with no traitor for the first game. Having the only experienced player of the four working against the others made the outcome a little too obvious to me.
