Also, I swear to god there was a level in Plutonia (level 32) that had more Cyberdemons in it than all of Doom and Doom 2 combined.
Yeah, Get 2 It! I loved that level. Back when I was younger I thought it was impossible without cheats, then I saw a video of a guy doing it on UV legitimately. I spent 45 minutes that night doing it. Felt great.
I ran into a glitch where my savegame would freeze about 5 seconds after loading. Saving again and reloading fixed it, thankfully. I was already half-way through the level by that point!
i still have one of the final doom sets left in the ps3 version of doom, i forget which one right off hand. i played through all of doom 1 and 2 basically in a row and didnt quite have the stamina to push through that last set. i was just playing on hey not too rough, because its hard on a controller, but the final doom levels are still a kick in the balls.
Team TNT did a great job with Evilution; easily the better half of Final Doom. I don't recall having any frustrations outside of some puzzles and map traversal, and everything moved at a nice, brisk pace. I tried going through Eternal Doom a few times now but keep getting mired in the huge maps - I appreciate the design approach, but it does kill some of the momentum.
This is my biggest complaint about most custom wads that people play as coop on Zandronum. They're absolutely huge, and joining mid-game means you're spending ~10 minutes running around finding keys so you can maybe catch up with the group. There's very poor momentum.
All the dooms done on Brutal Doom's highest difficulty Black Metal which is probably easier than Nightmare due to no respawns but it was quite the challenge. Plutonia probably the worst with all those teleport into instant death traps if you don't have near max health and armor.
How incredibly stupid. Footage will be leaked, and it'll be crappy quality. Not just releasing it is so dumb. Also, no Carmack keynote.

Well yeah, Carmack ain't exactly repping id anymore. And, I'd imagine, Zenimax going legal hulk against his employer puts a bummer on any special speaking arrangements.
Edit: actually is this for sure? Last I read he said he'd still do it they'd let him, and article doesn't actually say he won't speak (just that he isn't at id anymore).
I thought there was still a pretty decent chance of Carmack doing a keynote this year before the lawsuit. But now? No. Which is too bad. The only reason I paid attention to QuakeCon the last couple years was to watch his keynotes. I only ever understood, like, 1/4 of anything he said at best, but I always loved watching him talk because he obviously knows his shit and I always learned something. Possibly finally seeing something about Doom 4 was the only thing I was left looking forward to for this year's event. Hearing that it would be closed door only killed the last shred of interest I had, and made me surprisingly angry.

I mean, the real rub is announcing the reveal online with a teaser video. It wouldn't surprise me if certain gaming sites don't run an op-ed piece that might pressure Bethesda into walking back on this.
Conversely, the new Doom must be in rough shape if this is the kind of confidence they have in it now.
So word this is a reboot, about the invasion of the UAC base on Mars.
You know, only the third time they've done that exact same story already.
They'll get it right this time. It will be specially remastered - with lens flare, and dewbacks and imperial walkers digitally edited into the background!
Anxiously awaiting the leak and/or official reveal once id finds out that it got leaked.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was a second reboot. As much as I would love to see Doom 4: Hell on Earth, sticking with Mars, its moons, and Hell would keep it consistent with most other games in the series.
Hopefully it won't be anything like the Call of Doomty stuff they trashed a while back.
So it sounds like they're going to ape Brutal Doom, complete with RIP AND TEAR? At least it sounds promising. Hopefully we'll see some real gameplay soon.
Let's get right to the point. No questions were taken and very little was said. About 10 to 15 minutes were shown on a PC with someone playing live. The following are my observations, presented as objectively as I can manage:
Doom is a remake of the original set on Mars, though additional locations seem likely.
The two maps that were shown resemble Doom 3, but are much more expansive, open and busy.
The player's helmet provides overlayed information, replacing the static HUDs of the previous games.
Early on, the player rips the arm off a dead marine and uses his hand to access an otherwise restricted area.
The combat uniform looks very high tech and facilitates melee attacks, such as crushing an enemy's head.
Nearly all enemies shown appear to have cybernetic elements, though they are equally as organic.
The layouts encourage jumping, with the player leaping very high and gracefully.
Barrels create enormous explosions.
The first map had a geo-thermal theme, with lots of sparks and lava. The doors use the classic sound and eveven look the part. Cargo ships or possibly drones could be seen flying in the distance.
The second map featured a slightly hellish area that felt very Doom 64-ish, complete with hanging body parts.
Player movement ranges from creeping slow to very fast, less so than Doom 1 but way more than Doom 3.
The most human looking enemies looked very grotesque and used weapons that resembled light beams and possibly concentrated fire.
The chainsaw, pistol, shotgun, super shotty, rocket launcher and plasma rifle were shown. No sign of reloading or alt fire.
Enemies react to where they're hit. Many gibbed in a variety of ways depending on the weapon. The chainsaw in particular tore zombies down the middle in an extremely brutal and visceral manner, and it was different every time.
The revenant has a jet pack and killed the player by ripping his arms off and beating him to death.
The mancubus had an extremely gruesome death involving having a piece of its gut shoved down its throat.
Every weapon seemed to haves lot of power to it. The shotguns have a very good range.
Sound effects were punchy and meaty. The music combined dark ambient and indusrial. No sign of metal or guitars, period.
The overall visual style is very detailed and resembles all of the Dooms, with a lot of Doom 3 thrown in, but with far more going on.
The player can jump on too of enemies and perform brutal mellee attacks.
As for comparisons to Brutal Doom, the blood and gore is very extreme, but appropriate within the context of the combat. The mellee attacks never slow down gameplay and happen within the POV in a couple seconds.
Each enemy looks unique and the classics are recognized easily. The cyberdemon was shown at the end, but no combat ensued.
There is an implication that the monsters are UAC experiments gone wrong.
No sign of helo from NPCs.
Graphics aren't groundbreaking, but does look much better than Rage and significantly better than TNO. Overall, they're true to the gritty industrial tendencies of the series, complimented by very moody use of light and shadow.
The game will have multiplayer and eill appear on XBOX1, PS4 and PC with a promise of 1080p 60FPS.
No leaked video as of right now. IGN or Gametrailers will get an exclusive in the coming days or the like.

I've already seen a lot of people moaning about the increased violence in the game. What was great about Brutal Doom is that it wasn't just a gore mod, it significantly enhanced the gameplay and gave it an extra level of intensity - you're a badass, yes, but the enemies are also badass, and much faster/more aggressive than in the vanilla game. As long as they got that part into the new one, then all is well.
Well then dont play games like Doom. Fuck the haters ultra gore rules. Doom has always been gory. Maybe no beat people to death with their own limbs gory, but close. and you cant exactly complain about it ruining the atmosphere or tone of the game, especially when theyre going for an old school fast-paced and arcady gamestyle.

Yeah, I mean, super ultra violence, whatever. It's Doom, and I guess they want to take it to the next level. Okay. But I'm not exactly drooling over myself over a demon ripping your arm off and beating you to death with it or using severed hands as keycards and whatever the fuck else like a some people seem to be. What the hell ever, man.
Im not drooling over it, but im not put off by it. I mean out of context those things in a kind of reel together looks lame, but I doubt that every keycard will use a severed hand. Its not a mechanic.
And the violent death animations is fantastic, because I see all these guys on spikes and demons decorating the walls with their intestines, and yet my death is just me fall over and my eyes turning red? These demons are meant to come from hell, the place of violent nastyness. As long as there isnt any sexual violence or anything like that go nuts.
I think violent finishers against you and your enemies suits the world of doom.
I thought they did a great job with the BFG edition on 360. Like its not the best way to play the early dooms obviously if you have a PC and the willingness to mod. But 3, with its expansions and a few extra levels, and a couple of polished areas, makes it enjoyable if you didnt already fundamentally detest it. If you can find it cheap I'd say its worth it.

You know that when even Nintendo figured out that streaming games out to the Internet so people can actually get hyped over your shit is actually a good thing, versus whatever the hell Bethesda thinks they're accomplishing, then maybe you should rethink your marketing strategy.
Or maybe it's actually super genius and I'm just super dumb.

By the way, lowly console peasant here, if I wanted to get into Doom and have a 360, is the BFG Edition worth checking out?

Have you ever played DOOM?
There is violence. There are things being exploded with rocket launchers. There is a gun called the Big Fucking Gun 9000.
If you don't enjoy splattering evil demons into gibs, then you're in the wrong thread, let's be real here.
