I bought this...
Holy fuck it's SO FAST... and the (early) combat areas are very MP-ish, I fell like I'm on a Deathmatch all the time, running in a circuit, jumping, bashing fools... Never stop, never get cover, never backtrack.
Finished the demo. It seemed okay, but I'm real bad with KBAM and it also feels a little too brown for my tastes. Just brown enemies shooting brown projectiles through brown dust and on brown land.
I liked it enough but I'm not sure I could handle several more hours of this.

Game works perfectly fine with a controller if that's your preference.
Also I didn't realize this even had a demo? Where'd you find that?

Well, to be fair, 90% of the first level takes place on the surface of Mars.

The game has a colorful palette, but it is muted.
It's actually one of the least-brown shooters I've seen in a while.
The enemies thing I think is legit though. In classic Doom you could pop your head into a room filled with enemies for a split second and instantly be able to tell how many there are and what types they are, but in new Doom a lot of the lower tier enemies do blend together from a distance. Once the imps start throwing fireballs or jumping around and the security assholes pull their shields up it's not so bad, but the enemies in new Doom definitely lack the level if distinctness that the original game's demons had.
Target prioritization doesn't seem to be as much of an issue in new Doom compared to attack dodging though I guess, so it's less "take out hitscan, take out projectile, take out melee" and more "bounce around the map like a sugared up eight year old and pick off whatever enemies are closest".
That Cyberdemon sure is dead now! I love how the fight fools you (or atleast me) into dumping all your BFG shots thinking "Heh, I've got this in the bag..." and then you get to the second part and are like "Oh...fuck." Great boss battle!

Finally beat the game after suffering a nasty bug where it was setting me to 600x480 resolution, which wasn't exactly playable. Turns it stopped auto-detecting my aspect ratio for some reason - manually change that fixed it.
Oh man, it was so good. I'm super hyped for the snapMap updates so I can start playing additional super fun single player stuff with the campaign style mechanics.
Also in our interview, we asked Stratton about the possibility of single-player DLC coming to Doom someday. He teased that Bethesda has "a couple things" in the pipeline that will be announced "shortly," though he declined to share any further specifics.

So after finishing Doom 2016:
I swear someone on that writing team has GOTTA be a fan of Hellgate: London. Between the knightly sorts and the ending bit with Samuel banishing you away...
I'd love to see a re-imagining of Heretic/Hexen somehow connected to the earlier Hell lore bits.

I wouldn't know what to do with myself if a good Heretic 2016 were made.
I'd pay full price for a new Heretic, even if it was a straight-up knockoff of 2016 Doom. Running around glory killing Gargoyles and Golems in vaguly medieval fantasy settings.

Instead of melee glory kills though, you cast dark magic spells that do things like melt their skin off or internally break all the bones in their body or explode them into nice chunky giblets...
Goddamn. Some of those situations, with a single guttering flame in a darkened corridor, illuminating expanses of demonic gore, are quite simply cinematic.
And then the Baron was just hilarious.

Just picked this up at GameStop for like $35, couldn't resist that price
It was pretty cool pulling the lever and finding that first secret room
Also I would fucking LOVE a Heretic 2016, I miss that game

The one smallest, littlest gripe I have about the new system is that for people on low health it sort of incentivises players to actually hold back on complete murder against lesser enemies in order to score health from a glory kill whenever HP is low, which feels oddly counterintuitive for a game which is traditionally 100% murder (like, let me consciously use my shotgun at suboptimal range or just go for the knees so that I don't kill this demon outright)
That said, it entirely solves the momentum issue of how to regain health in a shooter so it's a very minor gripe

I like the knife-edge tension it adds. Instead of running off to go find health, the game rewards you for crashing into the enemy guns blazing, but doing it in a smart way to stay alive.

Same reason I loved playing a Vanguard in Mass Effect 2&3
So I'm a few levels in now and really enjoying this game. I miss this style of shooter where it's just a big level you have to figure out, not just straight line

I actually really like the changes to target priority here.
The older games had you prioritizing your enemies to take out the Hitscan enemies first, which often meant you were holding back on others until they were dealt with.
this just flips things around so the weaker enemies are not target 1, and combined with the glory kill or chainsaw mechanics gives a nice strategic layer to your target selection.
(do I chainsaw the demon more likely to give me issues in combat but will chew more fuel? or do I fight him the hard way and instead chainsaw that Imp that gives me no trouble but only costs a single pip of chainsaw fuel?"

Shield guys?
Hand grenades.
They and mancubui make for awesome health/armor pickups and stations once you have siphon grenades.

Got halway up the ardent tower on Ultra Nightmare. Was doing good...planning my upgrades, feeling confident. Then a shield guy came around the corner and TORE IT ALL ASUNDER. I didn't have any plasma ammo for the stun. I...I...CURSE YOU SHIELD GUYS

Those and imps on Nightmare. Those little jumping bastards are easily my largest source of deaths.
They just need to make some damn noise. They run up behind you and there is zero sound for it, then they kill you in one or two quick slashes.
Not so bad when the fight areas start opening up, but super-frustrating in the more enclosed areas earlier on.
Fuck of course
