Weekend NOLA trip

KyouguKyougu Registered User regular
So I never been to New Orleans, and I figured it was a good a time as ever to plan a trip there, specially since I have some interest from friends.

We're planning to make the drive from Dallas to there, so transportation is taken care off, but everything else is up in the air. Since I never been I dunno what area I should be looking at. I mainly want something affordable, nothing really fancy.

What attractions should we hit up? Natrually we'll be doing plenty of drinking, but anything else?

frenchmen st bars, fried okra, catfish poboys, abita amber, euclid records and the louisiana music factory, bayou airboats, beignets, more music, more booze, more food!

i stayed in the french quarter and crammed all that and much more into three days. stay off bourbon st - veer east instead, and you'll have an awesome time. (i've heard good things about magazine st. and the garden district too, but i didn't make it that time 'round.)

bourbon st was probably the most disgusting place I've ever been to in the U.S., just smelled like sewage and filled with some disgusting looking prostitutes or whatever on every corner begging you to go into their weird establishment

I had a decent time in new orleans overall but I'd second the notion to just avoid bourbon st all together and stick with the french quarter

Bourbon Street is in the French quarter. It is well worth avoiding unless you are in a big group wanting to get absolutely plastered for cheap, in which case go there and don't bother the folks looking for a quiet drink on the other streets.

it's worth a walkthrough, to see if you will enjoy it. there are tons of zydeco/blues bars, Patty Obriens (sp?) is there if you want a hurricane, tropical isle for a hand grenade. there are lots of "hype" people trying to get you into their bars, but i'm 99% sure none of them are prostitutes (not counting the strip clubs). yeah it's loud, and yeah there are a lot of people, if it's warm out it will probably smell too, but i had a blast.

Yeah, I think they are just touts. Maybe I am naive.

You can't go wrong. all the food is good, for 2 days you could just eat in the quarter.

My advice it to play Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father first.

Garden District is cool and young. Try Magazine St., Oak St., and St. Charles if you want to see the collegiate area of town. Also, tons of fucking beautiful houses.

Eat a mufeletta: it's a non-poboy sammich with a unique olive salad spread on it. De-frickin-licious.

If you go to Bourbon St, please look down constantly to avoid stepping in horse shit.

Go to Coops, and grab either their Supreme Jumbalaya or their fried chicken. Oh my gaaaaaaaaawd, you can't go wrong.

Drago's for charbroiled oysters. Drago's beats Acme Oyster House any day of the week.

Pick up VIP passes for the Preservation Hall jazz performances. You won't regret it.
