Oh, hey, a new thread. Didn't notice till now.

Like others have said, that framerate for LR looks terrible. It makes it look cheap.

Man, so now we are officially in the generation where FFXV comes out.

    Knock on wood.

Well, judging by this pattern of new numbered FF games (not including MMOs)

    PS1 - 3 FF games
    PS2 - 2 FF games
    PS3 - 1 FF game

    prospects are not looking good

The PS2 had 3 FF games, and the PS3 will have 4 by the time Lightning Returns releases.

    PS1 - FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX
    PS2 - FFX and FFXII
    PS3 - FFXIII

As I said, new numbers, no MMOs
also it was just a joke

    You're forgetting FFXIV.

That's the game you shouldn't be forgetting.

Edit: it still counts, MMO or not.

Both online FFs had some of the best experiences in the whole franchise.

I'm closing in on finally finishing Four Heroes.

You know, a final boss with two consecutive forms with a cutscene in between is annoying at worst in most games. But considering the mechanics of Four Heroes, it's just plain cruel.

If I'm glad for anything in Lightning Returns, it's the removal of the random battles that XIII-2 added.

Augusta Tower is killing me on this second playthrough. I can't walk 10 feet without another encounter.

Too late for that. They've been working on this PS3 port for years (Production started January 2012, Japanese release date is December 26).

edit: aha, the Square-Enix release says "Details regarding the PlayStation®Vita system version will be announced at a later time." -- no idea why they're holding back, but all signs point to the expected digital-only release

Don't watch that trailer if you've not played FFX, dang. S-E just kinda not really giving a shit about attracting newcomers any more, huh.

These remakes are meant to prey on nostalgia, not bring in new people. Hence the fancy versions we never got. The games look nice, but nowhere near what a new PS3 title would look like.

Probably has better textures than LR though.

Oh hey, good job coming out after BD:FF. Maybe I'll find time for this in the spring.

I can't believe how long it's taking for that fucking HD port to come out.

I feel it's fully indicative of Square's continued incompetence. For all the good they're managing with things like FFXIV, they're still doing laughable things like this.

They won't even redub it. It shouldn't be taking longer than the development of the original game to spruce it up.

  • ShenShen Registered User regular
You can't be nostalgic for content you never got :P Though speaking of Bravely Default, the European version of FFX is another rare example of us coming out on top, as it had all the international content. I just think it's a shame they're spoiling all the best bits of X's storyline in the trailers, you can appeal to nostalgia without alienating new people. S-E seem happy to slowly haemorrhage fans though, so it's par for the course.

I've been doing some FFIV on my iPhone, and I have to say I don't get the hate for the augment system. It's no job system, but it spices up a relatively straightforward game.

Whale ship don't look whale enough though, bro.

Man I really wish Bravely Default, X/X-2, and Lightning Returns weren't all coming out within like 6 weeks of each other. I mean, i'll just buy them all and work through as I can, but I wish at least one of them would come out before the end of this year.

I'd argue that while knowing something happens in advance may seem immediately preferable, it means that the story has less lasting impact. Adorable counterpoint (uh, spoilers for Star Wars):

Revisiting something once you've experienced the twist is a delightfully unique experience - going through once unspoiled, then going through it again means you have the best of both worlds.

I guess for me it's just that I've read, watched, and played enough things at this point that I can't remember the last time a story didn't go exactly the way I expected without relying on really shitty writing (namely the "What a TWIST!" type nonsense), so "spoilers" serve more to warn me about bad stories or excite me about upcoming events than they ever diminish anything.

I'd absolutely love a new Dissidia and am frankly surprised we haven't gotten a sequel yet. That should be a franchise that can continue to exist as they keep adding more characters.

For the love of god make a Dissidia with an online mode.

  • EnlongEnlong Registered User regular
Yeah. Did they really have to write 012 in such a way as to make any future Dissidias either impossible or without a stream of nooks to fight?

  • UnbreakableVowUnbreakableVow Registered User regular
That trailer isn't really spoilery at all

Rikku's line has no context - lines about someone possibly dying are common in trailers

And there's no context to the X-2 stuff either

    That trailer is Perfectly Fine

  • SyphonBlueSyphonBlue The studying beaver That beaver sure loves studying!Registered User regular
Yeah it's only spoilery to you cause you've played the game and have the context. To someone with no context, none of it means anything.

To be fair we are talking about the biggest HD re-release so far, in terms of the sheer size of the games they're working on

FFX alone might be that on its own

But both games? I imagine there's a lot of shit that goes into getting all that stuff looking right

It's like they make announcements after a meeting and before they start doing any real work at all.

You know, this is apparently a contentious opinion, but:

If you need proof of Square Enix doing stupid/incompetent things, taking a long time to do a HD remake of a popular game is pretty low on the list.

Youre actually not that far off...

I know Square bashing is a pretty popular thing here, but I'd just like to point out that a majority of the people who probably would have worked on the remake were shifted over to FFXIV when they decided to rehaul it. Which was, coincidentally, in 2011.

They had over 350 people working on that game. Most weren't new hires or external contracts or anything either. SE literally moved almost their entire staff onto a single project for long stints of time.

which, might I note, worked out very well for them as FFXIV did better then they projected in the end.

To be fair, this is the same company that came onstage during the PS4 reveal to show an old trailer for a game that doesn't even exist, followed by "Please be excited for when we'll show you stuff you might actually care about at a later time".

Rydia on the roster, plz. Her, Celes, Edge, Sabin, possibly Gau would be great additions stylewise. Put it on a console this time, too. Vita/PS3 or 4 cross-play would be outstanding.

To be fair we are talking about the biggest HD re-release so far, in terms of the sheer size of the games they're working on

I'd argue the MGS HD Collection is a far bigger HD port as quantity goes.

Regardless, I'm sure if they just gave the games to Bluepoint they would have been done at half the time.

So far the only extra mile this collection seems to have gone for is updated character models and remastered music. Beyond that, the dubbing is untouched, the FMVs are cropped, and the texture work is reportedly "good but not great".

It really shouldn't have taken this long.

I wasn't talking about Rikku's line in the trailer - Yuna's the protagonist of X-2 after all.
I was thinking more about the scene where Tidus's arms are translucent.

At this point, the release date is almost certainly due to strategic concerns (Not wanting to release the HD collection in the same month as LR or BD) than because it will take them a full 3 months to finish whatever localization is necessary.

  • UnbreakableVowUnbreakableVow Registered User regular
I mean really, what localization could be left? Just the additional 30 minutes I'd imagine. They already have all their other voice work and translation in place

  • DehumanizedDehumanized Registered User regular
Regardless of how much new localized content needs to be produced (and there probably isn't a ton), it does all have to pass QA and platform cert in each region it's localized for. Still not going to add three months, but probably takes around a month beyond the time spent on the Japanese version.

It would also be probably the only thing Bluepoint would be working on.

Meanwhile they've been working on what: FFXIV, FFXV, FFXII-3, Bravely Default, DQX, KH 1.5, KH2.5. Probably others I'm forgetting. Not to mention the whole Eidos subsection, though one would hope that doesn't require much actual involvement.

I mean that's a serious problem in and of itself. They've got too damn much work on their plate already, and they keep announcing new shit, when they really need to shut the fuck up and finish up their workload first.

It's not taking a long time because they olol suck at making games. It's taking a long time because they olol suck at time/work management

Never said anything of the former, agree entirely on the latter.

This is not to say they don't make bad games, but if they would get their certified hits out quicker (FFXV) then their missteps wouldn't seem so prevalent.
