I finally threw 300K Gil at Yojimbo to get rid of dark Valefor when I realized how far out of my reach he was. Probably could have gotten it cheaper, but eh, I've never done X's side content, and I really want to grab everything before I burn out. The other dark aeons I'll treat a little more legitimately.
Or I'll just walk away! Still have X-2 to play for the first time.
I don't mean to boast or be that guy or anything, but both chocobo training and chocobo racing with five chests were only slightly bullshit. I'm pleased I got through both with only minor amounts of frustration and less than an hour between them.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to hit the dark aeons like they're a brick wall, though, since I haven't been power leveling at all and I'm kind of low on Yojimbo money.

Finally got Aeronite down, on Day 7 of Easy mode. My strategy, for those who were curious:
Used to soak Magic attacks with 100% resistance, guard against Physical attacks, as well as build the stagger gauge. After the 4th stagger used to keep up Deprotect and Imperil to maximize damage.
Used to keep Deshell up to maximize Stagger Power, put up Defaith before Hellfire, and build the stagger gauge. Try to achieve stagger with this schema, since it has Quick Stagger from Chaos's Revenge.
Schema 2 Soldier of Peace
Godendag
Guardian Corps Shield
Fighter's Emblem
Dawn Gauntlets (Could have possibly been Collector Catalog)
Shadowbind/Heavy Slash/ATB Charge/Thundara
Used to build stagger gauge throughout the fight, and then kill the boss after the 4th stagger with Artemis's Arrows. Alternate full ATB bars with Overclocking. ATB Charge was a backup plan if I ran out of EP and Ethers.
Know for each phase of the fight you have 3 minutes to stagger him or he'll fly away and you have to find him and start over.
From Start:
He uses -ra level magic when you're at range, which you should aspire to be at all times, since he will use physical attacks and knock you down if you're in melee range. It takes a little practice to learn the timing of his spells so you know when it's safe to switch out of Quiet Guardian and resume your offense. It takes two casts of Deshell to actually apply it; after it's up cycle through your 3 schema with a constant barrage of magic. Also watch for him to start casting Magnet; if you catch it and switch to Quiet Guardian, you won't get pulled in, otherwise he'll pull you into melee range. Heavy Guard if he uses Roar, otherwise get the hell out ASAP (Quiet Guardian in case of Dragon Breath). Casting Magic sometimes makes you jump backwards quickly. Lastly he uses Megaton Press: it has a long start up, during which you can attack him, then he takes off and does a physical attack, which you should Heavy Guard, and finishes with a magic attack, which you should ride out in Quiet Guardian, since all attacks miss him during his Quake attack.
After 1st stagger:
After each stagger he immediately uses a Roar, so Heavy Guard if you're too close. He now uses -ga level magic, which has different (I think easier to dodge) timing. He also casts Pain and Fog, the former you don't care about and the latter you're immune to, so use this time to lay into him with Schema other than Quiet Guardian.
After 2nd stagger
He now uses Hellfire instead of Megaton Press. Try to put up Defaith (apply twice) before he finishes casting. This will still almost certainly kill you unless you Perfect Guard, which I am incapable of, which is why I brought 3 Phoenix Downs.
After 3rd stagger
He will now use 4th level magic, which has a very long casting time, so figure out the new timing for when you can switch out of Quiet Guardian and resume your offense.
After 4th stagger
He switches to -ga level magic now. This is when he is actually vulnerable to damage, so drink Enaero and Hero's Potions, put up Deprotect and Imperil, and lay into him with Artemis's Arrows, alternating between regular ATB and Overclocking for a constant barrage of damage. If you run out of EP pop an Ether. Whenever he casts a -ga level magic, switch to Quiet Guardian, reapply Deprotect and Imperil, and switch back to deal damage once it's safe. I was doing about 100-200k with full buffs/debuffs. You only have 3 minutes to kill him, and he has a LOT of health.
Man, I'd forgotten how much I hated the final boss of X.
And his fucking terrible music.
Jesus christ it's like nails on a chalkboard. Made of shit. That was vomited out of a baby cthulu's anus.
But overworld's a pretty cool song!
Yes, I'm of the opinion that the final bunch of dudes you are in combat with don't count as the final boss.
Took a break from Ribbon grinding after failing to get beyond 2/7. Started prepping my Grid maxing weapons by fighting One-Eye with Anima. Not only did I get all seven weapons with Triple AP and room for Overdrive -> AP and Triple Overdrive later, but selling the other equipment drops netted me two million gill. Pitty there aren't more Sphere dropping monsters that Anima can easily handle at this stage.

I actually liked the final boss fight(well...not the final final boss fight but everything that led up to it).
If anything my biggest complaint would be that it didn't last long because by the time I got to it everyone was hitting for 9999.
I think the problem with the final boss is that everything but the final boss itself is so good. Spoiler just in case:
Like, Braska's Final Aeon is a great fight, and while they aren't difficult fights, I enjoy the Aeon gauntlet afterwards (dat music!). Then Yu Yevon comes down and its just so...easy. In MMO terms, its just a DPS check. Which is double lame because Sin is a proper DPS race, one that will game over you if you fail, no questions asked. Here, its just making sure you can deal more that he heals a turn, which is easy.

Also, can't you inflict zombie status so that the healing deals damage?

What you're talking about isn't the final boss, it's just a playable victory lap instead of being CGI or a story scene. You literally can not possibly lose the fight(s); all your party members have permanent Auto-Life cast upon them. It's another Cloud vs Sepheroth, or alternatively... the final 1v1 battles of Persona 3 and Persona 4, etc., etc.
Braska's Final Aeon is the final boss.
Aeon Gauntlet and Yu Yevon are physically un-loseable. The game designers just made them playable to make you feel like a badass or something, instead of making them story scenes you watch.
That reminds me, is the an explanation for the perma-auto life thing? That was outta left field.
E: Also, I completely agree that BFA is the proper final boss, I'm not trying to argue against that.
IIRC, the Fayth are healing you so you can finally help them rest afterwards.
Basically, the Fayth are already helping by making the summons, right? But Yu Yevon co-opts the summons during the battle to make a new Sin because the Final Aeon is no longer an option. For some reason Yu Yevon perpetuates both them sleeping to make Zanarkand for some reason and the entire summoner practice(basically it takes a trained summoner to learn to make the Final Aeon; otherwise there's really no intrinsic reason Yu Yevon allows them to exist, except maybe as an emergency option if a lesser Aeon beats Sin).
The question that bugs me is this:
Yu Yevon's possession warps the Aeon, but doesn't make it weaker, right? So over time the Final Aeon needs to get stronger and stronger, so Sin should also be stronger every incarnation, right?
Also:
The whole Dark Aeon thing really makes no sense in the game(though it's only an international thing originally of course) when you consider the fact that every last one of them is statistically WAY stronger than Sin.

One cool theory I saw back in the day was
that Tidus was the game's water Aeon, as otherwise there's a conspicuous absence of one, given there's a fire, ice and lightning rep.
The other theory was that Sin was the game's water Aeon, but ehhh, I think it reps Gravity more than anything else.

That's not a great theory.
Tidus is one of, like, a million dream Zanarkanders. And he doesn't really have any water powers. He can hold his breath for a long time, sure, but so can Rikku and Wakka, and any blitzballer.
There simply is no water aeon in the game. The game is just not symmetrical in that particular way.
Dark Raven XLaugh hard, run fast,be kindRegistered Userregular
It doesn't hold up to any real analysis, it's just a cool little what if, given the imagery of the Brotherhood sword and such.
IIRC, the Zanarkand Fayth are summoning Sin's shell, as they're forced to by Yu Yevon, and Dream Zanarkand is some side effect of their constant use over the 1000 years. So Tidus and Jecht as a part of their dream made real are much less than an Aeon, they're some weird aberration that don't require summoning.
Oh brilliant

Just to be pedantic, you can actually lose the "final fight". You just have to do it yourself.
Use Stonestrike weapons on yourself. The last character has to be able to hit himself with it.

Time for Yunalesca! I was tempted to use my Farplane Winds to customize a Deathproof armour, but I had a thought; would Deathstrike added on to the Taming Sword make for one hit captures? If so, that's where they're going :P
IIRC, if you're in Zombie state, her Megadeath attack has no effect. Hopefully I can just have one fighter in zomber status then.

Whoo! Yunalesca down!
It wasn't too bad! A few times I cured zombie status moments before Yunalesca healed me for free. Heads up nerdbutts; she can still use Megadeath at random points throughout the third round, so keep someone as a zomber at all times.
Ahahaha, yo! Deathstrike Taming Sword totally works
A little late to say it, but it might be best to put Deathstrike on Wakkas' capture weapon, so you can get the flying ones without them dodging.
Then again, most of the flyers are weak enough for him to one-shot anyway, so it doesn't really matter.
Fun tip: if you're playing a lot of Blitzball and find yourself losing interest, try giving canned commentary in the old ps1-era style.
"[Datto!] [goes for a 1-man break!] [Viluchia!] [tackles hard!]"
Even better if you imagine how the game would have dealt with Tidus:
"[Star player of the Zanarkand Abes!] [catches the ball!]"
That may only be funny to me, though.

Ok, update on my FF13-3 journey!
Things are going a bit better though I'm still having some 'issues'. I'm in day 6 (IIRC) and have made some progress in all areas. I seemingly have done the main quests in the two cities and have currently given up on the one in the Wilderness because holy shit. Right now I'm running around in Dead Dunes which is, IMO, much too large considering. I have a bazillion side quests which I should be working on for stat reasons but they're very boring. That being said, I feel like I'm having more trouble than I should killing enemies. It might be because my set-up is bad (more on that in a sec) and the fact that I haven't had a gear upgrade in days. I also keep forgetting to use Chronostasis which I'm sure is hurting me somewhat.
Anyhow, this is my general set up - (I'm using names off memory, might be wrong)
Nocturne - This is my physical 'set' and has attack/blitz but also Elementa because I couldn't think of a good third physical attack.
Black Mage - This is the (duh) magic set and has all four elements.
Providence (?) - This is my defense set. Has deprotect/shell/faith and guard. Equipped with the accessory that destroys your damage output but greatly increases your defense (which I assume was fine since I'm only using this to debuff/guard).
I think my biggest thing in terms of having trouble is that I run out of 'energy' really fast and even cycling and spending all the energy in my other schemas I still feel like I have a lot of downtime which gives enemies a chance to beat on me and whittle down my limited healing reserves. Chances are I probably need to go and complete a bunch of side quests which maybe will give me a gear upgrade or something? None of the stores are selling anything that seems like an upgrade outside an overpriced weapon or two which just has 30-40 more magic/attack points. Speaking of which, what are the 3 columns next to the stats on weapons/armor? One of the icons looks like a lightning bolt, another one is blue and such.
Anyhow, if anyone has any tips, let me know! I want to like the game but I feel like I'm doing it "wrong" which is hurting my enjoyment.

Oho, I've remembered my Scumbag Tactics
DRX's Guide on how to Lie Cheat And Steal to Blitzball Victory!
LF: Tidus
RF: Wedge (Luca)
MF: Brother (Airship)
LD: Ropp (Mi'ihen Highroad Rin Agency)
RD: Kulukan (Kilika - you need to run out her contract with the Beasts by entering Exhibition Matches and forefeiting them 7 times)
GK: Nimrook (Airship - as above, but! His contract is lengthy and he's extremely likely to keep it, so it's best to start playing without him until his contract naturally expires, then grab him ASAP. Alternatively save scum it. I've not got him yet, still have Keepa)
When one of your guys gets the ball, swim behind the goalie to have the AI bug out and leave you alone. Once they reset their positions, it's safe to come out and start passing between your team indefinitely, scoring mad XP
I've been playing with the original Aurochs lineup, just because I can't remember who's worth getting. Once Keepa gets Super Goalie, it helps to compensate for his general crumminess, and I've generally managed to just overpower the other team so it doesn't come up. (I think he gets 99 sht if you get him the lvl 99, is that right?)
I generally spent my time trying to get equal goals between Tidus and Datto, so I can get an extra items for top scorer. Dattos' sht stat isn't really up to it, but he's got monster speed, and nap shot is helping.
So I know everyone is in super FFX mode right now, but after having lost all interest in FFXIII-3, I bought FFVIII from the psn. It is my first time playing it since high school, as I finally put it down, realizing if I ever picked it up again I would just quickly become bored with it and not finish it. I think I was wrong. I spent thirty minutes yesterday drawing thunder, cure, scan, and fire from monsters in the first area so I could start breaking the game super early (might not even use the cards this time for extra challenge). I think I have an addiction....
I think my biggest thing in terms of having trouble is that I run out of 'energy' really fast and even cycling and spending all the energy in my other schemas I still feel like I have a lot of downtime which gives enemies a chance to beat on me and whittle down my limited healing reserves. Gear doesn't matter as much as stats. I finished most of my first run using the second cheapest weapons. Most of your stat upgrades, at least early on, will come from skills that you have equipped. Still, the "just 30-40 magic/attack" is a LOT for the first playthrough.
Also, you may have weapons equipped that are slowing down your regen. Look at the descriptions again.
Still, by the dead dunes you shouldn't be having this much trouble. Are you staggering enemies efficiently?

In Yusnaan you can get the Velvet Bouncer to replace Nocturne.
The Wildlands is one of the better places to do early side-quests because you get a teammate that can heal you (and also you can "run" indefinitely). Plus there's two main quests here (though one of them requires visiting two other locations to complete).
Black Mage is pretty powerful, but the two rapid spells it comes with will deplete your AP gauge very quickly. You have a few options for how you can deal with constant AP problems:
1. Play defensively. Hang out in your defender suit and block properly while your others refill their gauges. Bonus points if you have Mediguard.
2. Swap some of your abilities for low-AP abilities. You might do a bit less damage, but you'll probably stagger more easily. If everything is Quick or -ara/-aga, you'll often blow through your AP before you can get a stagger. Have some basic abilities equipped. Light Slash is a good way to maintain stagger while letting your caster refill AP.
3. Boost your AP recovery levels. Use schema, shields, and accessories that give AP bonuses. A good accessory for your physical attacker is the one that refills AP to standby schemata when you deal physical damage.

You might want to just do more sidequests...
Otherwise, maybe try to redo your setup? I have been using the Helter Skelter outfit for quite a while now, always putting it together with my strongest weapon and attack boosting accessories. My other outfits are typically Quiet Guardian for guarding and deprotecting, and Black Mage for staggering.
Beyond that, maybe try killing monsters? I think it was the cyclops monsters by the palace in Yusnaan, but the last one of those before they went extinct dropped a weapon with +900 Strength and Magic...

I got that weapon but it was only +480 for each stat. I think I want the combat to be faster than it is. I will do the side quests though I think I'll use a guide because I am tired of people dying because I forgot to be in a certain area at a certain time. Also I suck at staggering enemies and keeping them staggered.

The other theory was that Sin was the game's water Aeon, but ehhh, I think it reps Gravity more than anything else.
That's not a great theory.
There simply is no water aeon in the game. The game is just not symmetrical in that particular way.
It's not a boss fight if you can't lose the battle.
It's a playable cutscene.

After another hour I finally get a 0.00 (after getting a 0.20)
"Here's your prize!"
[Got Turbo Ether!]
My reaction:
I know that an exact 0.00 doesn't cut it, so I was quite distraught there for a second.
IIRC, if you're in Zombie state, her Megadeath attack has no effect. Hopefully I can just have one fighter in zomber status then.
-Indiana Solo, runner of blades
It wasn't too bad! A few times I cured zombie status moments before Yunalesca healed me for free. Heads up nerdbutts; she can still use Megadeath at random points throughout the third round, so keep someone as a zomber at all times.
Time to play some Blitzball.
-Indiana Solo, runner of blades
A little late to say it, but it might be best to put Deathstrike on Wakkas' capture weapon, so you can get the flying ones without them dodging.
Then again, most of the flyers are weak enough for him to one-shot anyway, so it doesn't really matter.
At some point I should put a stop to Sin...nah.
I went with Stonestrike. Works pretty well on most stuff. I probably should have Deathstruck it.

"[Datto!] [goes for a 1-man break!] [Viluchia!] [tackles hard!]"
Even better if you imagine how the game would have dealt with Tidus:
"[Star player of the Zanarkand Abes!] [catches the ball!]"
That may only be funny to me, though.

With a minute left, toss a Jecht shot their way
I generally spent my time trying to get equal goals between Tidus and Datto, so I can get an extra items for top scorer. Dattos' sht stat isn't really up to it, but he's got monster speed, and nap shot is helping.
