Okay, I'm probably going to DF Stone Vigil in the next day or two (when I can get more than ten uninterrupted minutes). I'm hearing that it's bitch for WARs, largely because of the roaming trash Aevis that hit HARD. The videos I watched of the boss fights made them seem fairly manageable. How much of a nightmare should I expect? I've tried to make sure my gear is as good as I can craft/buy/find. Outside of being diligent on defensive buffs and keeping the Infuriated buff up, what else should I be aware of?
You shouldn't worry about anything.
Just go in and have fun. Pull stuff back a ways so patrols don't get close. Nothing in the pre-50 dungeons require extra gearing or planning.
Okay, thanks for that. It looks like I can pull packs into rooms from what I've seen of the map.
So I saw this in Game for twenty quid and brought it more or less blind based on the shiney screenshots.
So with this class changing stuff how does your character start off? Also any particular things I should know aside from the server?

Yeah, when I was healing Spoon on our run thru SV it wasn't anything major. If you have a whm or blm feel free to mark mobs you want slept if you think you are taking damage too fast that the healer may be slow at healing.
Thing to remember is that when you push thru SV where there are open areas (you'll notice like open balconies with snow drifting in) that 2-3 ice elementals can spawn and you want to make sure that you don't engage another pat or pack at that time. It can be rough to deal with but assuming you have someone that can crowd control who is on the ball you shouldn't have too many issues.
The bosses are pretty fun. First boss is just a lot of dodging if I remember.
Second boss has a cannon mechanic that when a dragon pops up to aoe the group (there's an emote about this before it occurs) someone needs to activate the cannon to shoot the dragon down, otherwise you'll take periodic aoe damage. Then around, I dunno, 40% of the bosses health you will have random tornadoes that spawn from him and drift to the walls of the room. Inital hit can be hard but as long as you stay away from them you won't take the period damage hit. Do note that if a tornado is on a cannon, you will get interrupted trying to activate the cannon and can die in 3-5 hits. That was embarrassing since I was the only that died like that at the end of our run.
Third boss is mostly dodging aoes again, but this time you need to watch when he flies up. The room is virtually divided into 3 strips. When the boss flies up, one of these three strips will flash. Make sure you move out of that area or you will get nailed with a breath attack.
This is important since when you start getting him down under 40% health he'll start doing this AND throwing down aoe fields and that can make for some really really fun and chaotic movement while fighting. We thought it was by far more fun than the other bosses in the dungeon.

Bleh, I think I'm going to actually go Scholar with my ACN (well, I'll do both, but focus on Scholar probably), and am finding it obnoxious that you can't queue as heals as a ACN, so at 30 you're just suddenly supposed to know how to heal. :rotate:
Anyway, on base ACN, not related to healing; if I use the archer ability to increase damage by 20% does it only apply to spells cast afterward, or if I cast all my dots then pop the buff, will the dots automatically be stronger?
Also can XIV do mouseover macros like WoW? And what is the syntax? Also if so, what is the priority? In WoW it is Mouseover > Target > Myself.

Jakarrd's spot on. Just don't rush through the icy hallways, and you'll be just fine. The only dicey pulls are when you pull ahead and ice sprites spawn on you. Have fun--I found it to be a very enjoyable dungeon.

In regard to the dots, I think the game snapshots your damage based on stats at the time of cast, so you won't get the benefit of the buff on an already cast dot.

This is correct. The damage dealt by the dot is calculated based on your stats at the moment you activate the ability.
So if you pop a buff, cast the dot, the buff wears off before the dot wears off, and you try to cast the dot again, it will have no effect, because the game will not let you overwrite a powered-up dot with a weaker dot.

Also can XIV do mouseover macros like WoW? And what is the syntax? Also if so, what is the priority? In WoW it is Mouseover > Target > Myself.
The game can do mouseovers.
basic syntax is to put at the end of your command <mo> for mouse over, <t> for target, <tt> for target of target, <me> to cast on yourself, <focus> to cast on focus.
So for mouseover cure, for example:
/ac "Cure II" <mo>
Do note: Mouseover works well on frame items (party menu, etc) but if doesn't have a detection if you slide the cursor over a character model, only their name. So if mouse over your body, the action won't do anything to the mouse over. However, if you mouse over the name plate that is above the body, then the command will fire off and do the action to the target. This is what I have observed when playing around with the macros.
I usually am just mousing over my party frames or just targeting the <tt> of the target for almost everything. The only annoying part is when I want to sleep a mob, I can't just mouse over the mob in general and have sleep fire, i have to have the cursor somewhere on the name plate. I think it will work on the enemy target list as long as it gets populated (which doesn't always for me as the adds don't initally aggro me).
So you have some decent options for macroing up things.
Oh, about priority, typically the priority is from what you need specifically to what is general.
For sleep, as an example, I have <mo> first so that any mouse over fires first. then I have <focus> so that if I set a focus up it will fire on that. last, I have <t> set so that if I don't have my mouse over something AND I don't have a focus set, then it will fire on whatever I have targetted.
You could also put <tt> in there before <t> so that if you are targetting the tank it check and fire before then checking and firing if you have <t>, if that makes sense.
Edit: This is my basic set for anything assisting a player (cure, esuna, stoneskin, etc)...
/ac "name" <mo>
/ac "name" <tt>
/ac "name" <t>
/ac "name" <me>
I don't tend to put a healing target on focus so typically I don't include it.
so basically:
Check 1: If the mouse cursor over a valid frame, then cast on frame and End, else next check
Check 2: If there is a target of target that is valid, then cast on target of target and End, else next check
Check 3: If there is a Target that is valid, then cast on target and End, else next check
Check 4: Cast spell on me.

Another question about macros, can you force a macro to use a specific icon?

One nice thing about SV is that since it's required for everyone's story, you'll usually catch a first-timer or two, and people are normally pretty patient.
Another question about macros, can you force a macro to use a specific icon?
In the macro menu, on the right hand side you can click on the Gray box with the M in it and select the actual icon you want.
alternatively, if you want the normal icon but have it actually do things like color red or white on the hotbar if in range, then at the beginning of your macro put /macroicon "Name" where name is the action. then drag to your hotbar. before you use it will still be a gray box with an M but the first time you cast it, it should then update with the icon associated with the action.

Unless you have a really bad group, or are under-geared SCH is basically 2 people in one. You get an NPC healer and an extra DPS all for the the price of one! It's a fantastic class.
re: knowing how to heal, I get the impression they assumed most people would give CNJ and WHM a spin first or maybe that SCH would attract players with previous healing experience. A well played SCH can be very busy.
WHM/CNJ has some quality cross class spells that will be useful to you as you go, so yeah eventually I would do both. I did CNJ to 30 and then switched. Once I got SCH to 50 I took WHM to 34 for Stoneskin and for now I am done with WHM.

Cleric Stance is immensely useful for a Scholar if you want to DPS at all. It's not so much of a concern at lower levels when your MND and INT stats are similar, but even then it's still a 10% DPS boost straight up. It also does not affect the heals from your fairy minion. It would be silly to get Raise as a Scholar, because at 22 ACN you get Resurrection, which is the same thing except it is castable in combat without a trait. Protect is good to have for 4 man groups where you won't have a WHM around to cast the Proshell version (and you can't be guaranteed to have a Paladin as your tank). Stoneskin is alright, it can be useful pre-pull to give your tank a little bit more time to build threat before you have to heal anybody, but it's very mana inefficient (especially for Scholars) and is a long cast time so I wouldn't use it during combat very often.
I would very much recommend leveling THM to 26 so you have access to Thunder, Surecast (situationally useful) and Swiftcast (best cross-class caster skill in my opinion). Being able to instant cast Resurrection or your fairy minion (or a big heal if necessary) is amazing.
Cure = Physick, so no reason for us to get it. Raise until you get Resurrection @ 22. Stoneskin and Protect for 4 mans and such; most of the time you'll want a WHM buffing them since we don't get the improved versions. (This makes me feel like an asshole in 8 mans btw, I just hop around while the other guy buffs all the things. ) Stoneskin is pretty meh for us to use during combat, but it's great for pre-pull on speed runs.
More DoTs: For DPS Scholoring, grab Cleric Stance, Aero, and Thunder.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD EVERY HEALER SHOULD HAVE SWIFTCAST. (This is just a general PSA) I can't understand why any healer that's spent significant time at 50 doesn't grab this, I was DROOLING as soon as I realized I could have it and it worked on ANY spell and it's only a 60sec cooldown. Are you kidding me? Most often used on Shadow Flare, way too long of a cast time...

To be honest DWH Scholar healing at 30 amounts to staring at your fairy healing her butt off, thowing out eye for an eye if a big pack, throwing out some dots and bane-ing, running in circles for a minute or two, and if the tank decides to take more dmg throwing out 1 of two heals you have.
Also: Like Ishtaar said you will want to get stoneskin too. Might go for it first because it is "easier" to get with healer queues from 15-34.

I already have THM/BLM at 50, so that's not a big deal. I was just deciding if I wanted to play CNJ/WHM next or ACN/SCH/SMN, and figured I might just go with SCH as a focus on ACN, but earlier today I was thinking maybe I should do WHM first either way. I have WHM and ACN both at 20 (21?) so it's kinda even stephen from this point on.
So my launcher keeps telling me it's failed to update files.
Fix?
The only time I had this happen to me, my game directory was somehow set to "read only". I honestly don't know if that's your issue, but it can't hurt to check.

The reason I went ACN was because you get another free 50 out of it. 2 for 1! And because of the shield/pet healing mechanic. But you already have BLM at 50 so that will most likely not help in your deliberations.
The responses look to be wide ranging on this error code:
Reset your internet is one.
Delete the temp files in My Docs/My Games/FFXIV
Check to see if your FFXIV exe is not read-only.
Put compatability mode on your FFXIV exe.
Yeah those look similar to the errors I was getting when I had that issue. I had downloaded the beta client from a torrent so I could have it slightly earlier, and when I tried to update to the launch client it gave me errors that all ended up being related to the game and my docs directories being read only.

It's hard to even recommend one over the other, they're both fantastic classes. You do want both to 34 at least, Eye for an Eye is the bee's knees, and Stoneskin is definitely helpful. (And Virus which you already have) Do you prefer a more traditional, reactive healer with amazing throughput, or proactive absorb based class with a quirky but lovable fairy friend? You can't go wrong either way!

Thanks, this is super useful.
Another question about macros, can you force a macro to use a specific icon?

One nice thing about SV is that since it's required for everyone's story, you'll usually catch a first-timer or two, and people are normally pretty patient.

You can!
/macroicon "Cure II"
Will get you the icon, MP cost and CD of Cure II, but you will not get the tooltip. If anybody figures out how to get the tooltip, let me know!
The only reason they let you queue as a healer at 30 is because Fairy, you're still a DPS class.

You have access to the spells you need from CNJ by level 12 but you need 15 for the SCH requirement.
that should give you access to:
Aero, cleric stance, protect, raise. Aero is all you really need though I believe but you may get some use out of cleric stance.
After that, if you really want stoneskin you can eventually take CNJ to 34.
Fix?
To be honest DWH Scholar healing at 30 amounts to staring at your fairy healing her butt off, thowing out eye for an eye if a big pack, throwing out some dots and bane-ing, running in circles for a minute or two, and if the tank decides to take more dmg throwing out 1 of two heals you have.
Also: Like Ishtaar said you will want to get stoneskin too. Might go for it first because it is "easier" to get with healer queues from 15-34.
Does it give you an error number?
I already have THM/BLM at 50, so that's not a big deal. I was just deciding if I wanted to play CNJ/WHM next or ACN/SCH/SMN, and figured I might just go with SCH as a focus on ACN, but earlier today I was thinking maybe I should do WHM first either way. I have WHM and ACN both at 20 (21?) so it's kinda even stephen from this point on.

Looks to be no one way fix.
