Regarding the echo buff for coil turns in the future, does anyone else find that a really odd decision? I understand that not a huge amount of people are clearing turn 5 (at least not on our server, though that number is obviously growing all the time) but doesn't making what is currently the only real endgame content obsolete when they introduce new turns seem counter intuitive? Instead of there being more end game progression we'll stay in the situation where there is only one real challenge left. It seems to me that if they left coil how it is then it would take longer for a player to see all the end game content available, perhaps incentivising those players to continue subscribing for a longer time. It also feel it kind of cheapens the work all of the groups who have finished put into it, though that might be because of the games I've played before where all the new end game content was either parallel to or harder than the existing content, and you still needed to pass through it to get to that point. Am I being terribly elitist? I can't tell!
That's one way to look at it. The other way is that for all those people who can't complete the content (you even mention not a huge amount of people can), at some point they will throw their hands up and quit given the ever expanding gap between where they are and where the front runners are.
Carrots only work when you believe they are within your grasp. When the goal posts have been moved so far you can barely see it, many people are more willing to just move on to something they find they get more enjoyment from. And while some people might like to imagine that is okay, remember that those people are essentially subsidizing the development of content for the front runners. While there are some people who think they should be handed everything on a silver platter right meow, I would venture there is a larger group who will never be front runners, but are fine knowing that they are only ever one or two tiers behind the front. As long as they can remain there and have content that challenges them without being impossible (to them... not everyone has the same amount of skill or time to devout to something), you are more likely to keep them around.

You make some good points but I think you might be reaching the wrong conclusion, instead of people keeping their subscription to try and down the content, they will instead be frustrated that they cannot progress and see the new content because they can't get past the current content and will just stop playing the game.
Twintania is a damned tough fight, it takes a very competent group to get her down and the tuning on the fight is incredibly tight. It is a good challenge and they did a very good job on creating it. However because of how tightly it is tuned the majority of the playerbase will have difficulty completing it since it is more than just a gear check.
This wouldn't be a problem if it was optional content, but it's integrated into the main storyline, and to progress you need to get through it. I believe as long as they make the next set just as challenging as this one then it's fine to loosen the tuning on the previous turns. This basically gives the best of both worlds, The average player can get to complete the content and progress the story and start working on the next one, and the "hardcore" crowd gets to tackle the new challenge anyways.
I don't think it cheapens the kill for the people who downed it at the harder difficulty at all though, they know they did it, and others being able to do it afterwards via the Echo doesn't somehow invalidate the people who did it at it's prime.
In the end It's a smart move to get as many people as possible to experience the content, and for the longevity of the game it's the wise move. It keeps both the hardcore and the casual groups interested in the game and the new content, and while people can get through turn 1-5 easier, they can still try and tackle the new content at it's toughest difficulty and try to get that down.
Basically I see it like this. Coil will be the "tough" content each time. It will be brutal, tough to learn, and difficult to execute. Not everyone will be able to do it but people will continue to try for quite awhile (the multiple turn progression and getting more and more difficult is a very smart way to do it.)
On the flip side, Crystal tower is tuned to be the "everyman" instance, where you can join groups and get through the content without too much difficulty.
So there is stuff there for everyone, and as they introduce more and more tough content they ease the difficulty on the precursor content to allow more people access to it.
That's how I see it at least.

I agree with everything Delph said, but wanted to elaborate on the Coil remark. The "new" Coil will be the "tough" content. So, like he said, once T6-T10 are released, they can be what T1-T5 was first the people who just started out in Coil, months later many of whom are still trying to finish it. The previous content is a bit easier, but it means it's more accessible and more utilized (utilization is a pretty important metric in MMOs... you have a finite amount of development resources so you should be working on content that is highly utilized, otherwise you aren't getting the bang for your buck you'd like).
Edit: And to add, they don't just have to make it "Easy" from the get-go. It's fully possible that it will be a bit easier come 2.2 and then when the next tier of Coil (2.4?) comes out, T1-T5 gets a bit easier again while T6-T10 get a bit easier. Now you have 3+ tiers of content, catering to an even wider audience of players to help keep people engaged and feeling like there is a carrot within their grasp. There might be another one, maybe even bigger, a football field away... but there is a perfectly delicious looking one 10 feet in front of them, even if a bit smaller.
I think you'll all be happy to know that we'll soon be re-implementing the feature we had in the Beta that will allow you to use check boxes to select what is tracked on the Duty List.
The development team is currently finalizing the functionality and performing final checks, so stay tuned!
I'm sure I'll work on that stuff after I finish leveling things. Just currently the thought of wiping to the EX's for ages doesn't feel too appealing vs just spending time leveling the last few non-50's I have and finishing up all the relics.
Do any of you folks in endgame (or at least running 50 instances) run strictly on a PS3/4? I've been moving away from spending a lot of game time on my PC as my work time on one increases, which has pretty much nixed my MMOing, but I still like to veg out on the couch for a good game session now and then.
Do you find the controller effective for most if not all roles even in higher end content? Do you miss the keyboard (or use one plugged in)? I think those are my 2 biggest concerns with the idea.

We have one ps3 user in our raid group and he has no problem with coil or extreme primals, so I imagine once you get used to the controller you'll be fine!

I'm a PC user that uses a controller + keyboard. I don't think the experience would be any different from a PS3 user with a keyboard and I've been extremely happy with it so far. I've got the PS3 version hooked up here too, but I'd be lying if I said I spent more than an hour or two on there. Played perfectly fine from what I saw, but wasn't as purty. It takes a little while for the cross bar controls to really click after you start needing to switch bars on the fly, but it definitely clicked and I'm pretty in love with it. All of that said, I haven't done endgame content yet. I don't think I've played any worse than I would have with strictly mouse and keyboard up to levels in the 40's, and I'm way too stubborn to give up the fancy camera and analog movement control I get here.
And damn this maintenance this is my last night before the new semester. Let me stay up all night playing video games like a responsible adult.
Thanks for Chimera before maintenance! Soon I'll be at the part of the quest that just laughs at my awful client lag on this laptop and launches me off platforms
I'm glad I got the Armor of Light today, last tank item I need is from the first boss so I don't need to know!
Well..until I start another set. :rotate:
EDIT: Also, honestly, the random 4th chest in CT should be on the first 2 bosses; those seem to be the ones everyone avoids. Doing Archeron is a no-brainer because it is faceroll and it gives a lot of myth/philo and there's no trash.

And they addressed the bunnies in the wolves den. No more Hop Hop for you!
Aww, nerf to escort leves, although who didn't see that coming a mile away. It will make the 48-50 range pretty awful though, unless people start doing Northern Thanalan FATEs again. (Darkhold exp is meh and nooooooobody wants to do AV) The new thing is Aleport until 20, South Shroud 20-30 and Central Highlands from 30-50. At least I only have Dragoon left...
I wonder what they nerfed in Thornmarch? I imagine maybe the health of the adds? The mechanics aren't bad, but I imagine it would be awful in the intended gear level. Every group I've run with significantly outgears it.
Overall though, a lot of nice little quality of life changes; I like that we'll still be able to get quest items for beast tribe FATE 'fails,' since it's difficult to more than one person to do them at odd hours. Being able to teleport to our FC house will be amazing. Being able to swap to a gathering class with full GP is awesome. Vote Abandon will be nice for those pugs that just obviously will never win but nobody wants to take one for the team. And finally, something other than Statasha in roulette!
I'm assuming from the second part, "To preserve game balance in light of this, the difficulty of the following guildleves has been increased" that you'll have to actually kill something rather than run past all the mobs. I'm currently at work (awaiting the snowstorm of dooooooooom, hopefully they let us go early) so can't confirm.
I'd assume they just added more monsters or something. Like, they spawn at more points (so that if you do it normal you don't get overwhelmed). What would have "fixed" the leves, IMO, is if they made it that the guy refuses to move as long as something is present/aggroed. Maybe this is what they did. You are right the wording isn't overly clear.
From reading random forum posts it sounds like the mobs are more aggressive to the escort guy, so you have to kill/sleep/whatever or there's a strong chance it will be killed. Makes sense.
Also from what I'm reading, it looks like the new crafting item from CT might share a loot lockout with gear drops? The English version of the patch notes doesn't explicitly say that it does, it actually implies that it doesn't "On rare occasions, a fourth treasure chest may appear upon defeating the last boss of the Labyrinth of the Ancients. This fourth treasure contains a Dimension Blade fragment that can be used to create the Savage Arc of Triumph furnishing. Should this fourth treasure chest appear, all members of the alliance are allowed to cast lots.
* Players can only obtain one Dimension Blade fragment per week." But I'm seeing posts from folks that already got their item not being able to roll. I guess I'll hold off until that's sorted out.
Apparently the Japanese version of the patch notes says that it does share a lockout, but I don't read Japanese. From Reddit:
※次元刀の欠片も1週間の取得制限に含まれます。literally translates to "Dimension Blade is also included in the weekly loot limit."
Also, I spit out my coffee at this post regarding the Garuda EX fix:

To be fair, Guildhests are really designed to teach mechanics, so it's not really a nerf as such.

The vote abandon button is a nice addition that I wish WoW had done. I know they still have Vote to Kick but it isnt used if you make one mistake commonly, yet.
Five years past, Eorzea was gripped with terror as Dalamud, a prison once thought to be one of Hydaelyn's two moons, began its inexorable descent upon her people. Day by day this celestial body grew larger in the sky, the people became more restless, and the Garleans ever bolder. Eorzea's leaders made a valiant effort to forestall the coming cataclysm, but nothing could prevent the unleashing of Bahamut, and the Calamity that would forever alter our realm.
Why do I now recount this grim chapter in our history, I hear the inquiring reader ask. The answer is an unnerving one─rumors of late would lead me to believe that another Calamity might not be far off in the coming. Strange happenings not unlike those that did presage the end of the Sixth Astral Era have been reported in all corners of the realm. More dreadful still, an ominous shadowy figure has been sighted at the eye of these sorcerous storms. Though none who gazed upon this fiend in truth have lived to tell the tale, rumors speak of maniacal laughter─a spine-chilling cackle─that can be heard from malms away.
While the locals live in fear of vast and imminent destruction, officials claim this is merely a plot of Garlean origin─a diversion, if you will. Although I am wont to disagree with this assertion, let us suppose for a moment that this is indeed the case. Before the release of Bahamut, harbinger of the Seventh Umbral Era, the realm experienced a number of otherwise inexplicable phenomena. From rains of fire to strange behavior in wildlife, Dalamud's influence reverberated deeply within the realm, and its fateful descent can be traced back to the Garlean Empire, and the scheming of one Nael van Darnus. Would it not stand to reason that these telltale signs pose a threat that demands swift investigation? That if left unchecked, this simple plot may once again reshape our realm for the worse?
There is no question in my mind that powerful forces are at work here. But alas, mine is the realm of pen and paper, and such matters are beyond my power. To that end, I would ask any willing adventurer who reads these words to hear my plea. Seek out the truth of these otherwordly disturbances, that the truth may put our realm at ease.

Typically forged of stone and clay, the magical monstrosities known as golems once served myriad masters at the height of the Fifth Astral Era. Though the craft of their creation is thought to be forgotten, it is not uncommon to glimpse these terrifying titans near ruins of the ancient city of Belah'dia.
However, prodigious prospects of newfound golems both puissant and pernicious have Amajina & Sons in a pickle, and diligent miners dumbfounded with disbelief. In fact, I daresay this may be the second coming of the Mad Mythril Rush─for if the stories are true, these terrestrial titans are composed of choice minerals heretofore unseen in Eorzea.
Burgeoning businesses are abuzz with anticipation, and justifiably so. Though their quality and constitution have yet to be confirmed, the possible applications for this remarkable new resource are limitless. Lovely links to make beautiful bangles? Or perhaps perduring plating for a peerless piece of armor? The mining community is ever eager to discover the truth of these gargantuan gold mines.
While Amajina & Sons is the forerunning faction in such matters, competing interests have also popped up in pursuit of these coveted creatures. Even adventurers have been seen scouring the caverns and chasms of Eorzea in hopes of reaping the riches. Though these prospects show promising potential, we must first prove the golems to be real, lest businesses flounder in the face of fanciful fabrications.
