Controller recommendations for pc?
Any good recommendations for game controllers for a pc? I had been using a ps3 controller for awhile but its a little quirky and cumbersome to set up. I've heard a lot of recommendations for xbox controllers, but wondered what else is good out there. What do you use and love?

I guess Logitech's controllers are probably OK?
the only reason I can think of not getting one is if you desperately want a d-pad that isn't a pile of shit
If you're using MotionInJoy, I'd agree that it's a pain in the ass. I uninstalled that and switched to SCP, which pretty much perfectly causes your PS3 to emulate a 360 controller and it was fairly straight forward to set up. Check it out if you like, I'm definitely fine with the PS3 controller myself.
Instructions are here http://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-XInput-Wrapper-for-DS3-and-Play-com-USB-Dual-DS2-Controller
Note that although it says stuff about the Bluetooth dongle, you don't need one, you can run the PS3 controller purely through the charge cable if you want.
Alternatively, a friend of mine got some sort of Razer 360 controller for PC with some extra programmable buttons and the face buttons themselves are kind of neat, very short actuation distance and clicky like mouse buttons. He really liked it anyway, I don't recall what it was called.
But all recent games are designed with the 360 controller in mind it seems. Aside from compatibility issues you may have if using a Dual Shock, the on screen context prompts usually refer to the 360 button scheme, so it can be confusing if you're not using the same controller.
Basically.. just get a 360 and everything will be okay.

Ah yeah, that's the 360 pad's one red glowy weak spot. The terrible d-pad. I think the one that has the rotatey raised d-pad is supposed to be marginally better.
I have to give a shoutout to the Razer Hydra and the Sixense STEM, though. The hydra is outdated already, with the STEM being funded, but these are pretty much the PC motion controllers.
@Dranyth I'll definitely check that out too. Thanks for the info!
Still awful.

Because a flood of cheap knockoffs has hit ebay and it's hard to find a legit USB pad, I just recommend getting a cheap $20 saturn->USB converter and using a real saturn pad.
Probably not as good but a helluva lot easier to find.

Not even anywhere near as good, and it's more expensive, too.
just an example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Official-Sega-Saturn-Controller-Cleaned-Tested-/181234248494?pt=US_Video_Game_Controllers&hash=item2a32672b2e
$20, compared to the $30 the madcatz controller goes for in stores. And that $20 saturn pad is on the higher end of the price, I've picked up model 2 saturn pads for as low as $7 before.
Steer clear from Razer. The official 360 pad is a hell lot better and more durable.
I've had the complete opposite experience. My Onza Mass Effect 3 Tournament Edition pad has been working like a champ since the day I bought it. I love the tactile feel of the face buttons, the way the D-pad is laid out, and the general feel of the thing. I've used it extensively in Batman: Arkham Asylum, Saints Row 2, SR3, and SR4 (combined total of over 300 hours), Fable 3, Kingdoms of Amalur, and basically every game that uses the gamepad and is not an FPS.
Also, I refuse to use the wireless 360 controllers since they are WAY too unreliable (I have had nothing but constant connectivity issues with the thing).
and the wired 360 pad solves any and all connectivity issues.
All of those are for the regular, vanilla Onza/Onza TE, though. I'm wondering if they change some of the manufacturing processes for their branded controllers. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but like I said, I've had nothing bad happen to the ME3 Onza TE that I got the day they were made available...and I can't find google search results that line up with what you've found with the vanilla product.
Also, just looking at the various customer reviews, it does seem that their game-specific branded Onza's rate higher than the vanilla product. So it does seem there is some build variation going on.
And of course not ALL Onzas will fail, but the average build quality is very shoddy.
And I'll say this, but I've had more issues with the official 360 controllers (wired and wireless) than I have with my Onza. I suppose I've gotten pretty lucky with my Razer products so far. From what I can tell from your google results for the Onza issues, most of the complaints mirror what I've seen on my 360 pads :P
Fortune is truly a fickle beast.
This is the best way to go as long as you don't want the analog Saturn pad (which you want the Saturn pad for the Dpad anyway...)
I actually sold my Xbox 360 fight pad because its just not as good as the Saturn pad. And they mapped the face buttons stupid so you can barely use it for anything but fighters. I know its marketed for fighting games but theres no reason it couldn't have been a great PC 2D platformer controller.
Otherwise I'm super happy with the 360 controller for everything else PC. Most console ports recognize it and show the proper button prompts too.

Wireless model is only preferably if you have little hands.
I can understand the appeal of wireless if you're playing on a console where the couch is further away from the screen, or if you've got a living room PC hooked up to your big screen.
Otherwise, I really really like not having to buy batteries or use those shitty rechargeable packs.
The wired and wireless models are exactly the same size and shape.
