The main question is if he can handle the switch in.
If Heracross is sent in as soon as you see Aegislash, he's gonna take, at maximum, one unboosted attack followed by an unboosted Shadow Sbeak, or one +2 Shadow Sneak.
I would hesitate not. Heracross isn't too bulky on the physical side, but even if it could take a +2 Sacred Sword + Shadow Sneak, it has to be able to 2HKO it. It doesn't have STAB EQ, but maybe Choice Band EQ could just edge it out with max attack + nature.
Damn I love houndoom and had him on my competitive diamond team. But he seems to just die instantly to so many types now
Sorry, it always has.
Haha I always did fairly well with him. Maybe the rest of my team just did the heavy lifting
It can do fairly well with Focus sash, Pursuit, Sucker Punch and Flamethrower.
He can do okay on sun teams too, since he learns Solar Beam. But yeah, he needs focus sash since he's so frail.
Mega Houndoom has 90's in both defenses and gets a nice boost in the sun, but he's still very much a glass cannon.

If I want to put a Nidoking in my party for the purpose of throwing down Toxic Spikes would it make sense to max speed even though his base speed isn't great?
Or would it make more sense to try and make him bulky enough to survive the first round?

Id make him survive the first round, I doubt hes outrunning anyone.
Gotta find someone that can throw out hazards on a Rain Dance team...

Greninja? Gets both spikes. Crazy fast.
What do you mean "both" spikes?
I only see 1 spikes on his move list.
Holy shit he learns a Protect move that also works on an ally...Doubles it is.
I wonder how good weather is going to be this gen. Thinking about making a Sun team for funsies, but I know in my heart that Rain is probably a smarter bet if I do it. Hrm.

Man, I made the choice to just barrel through the story so I can get to the friend safari and breeding, and it is so hard to do. So many pokemon I'm not catching!

If you're not going to make use of Nidoking's Speed, you might as well use Nidoqueen for its extra bulk. Nidoking has a bit more attack and speed, ideal for wallbreaking with Sheer Force.

Dude. The odds are nuts. However, if you honestly bred 1.5k Charmanders then I say keep going. Worst case scenario you go absolutely mad.
